Mooseheads take 2-0 series lead
The Halifax Mooseheads scored twice in the first 56 seconds of the game Saturday night on their way to a 4-1 victory over the Moncton Wildcats.
Fifty seconds into the game Martin Frk opened the scoring and then directly off the face-off Alexandre Grenier added another just six seconds later.
Both Mooseheads net minder Zach Fucale and the Wildcats’ Roman Will played well, both made several major stops to keep it close.
Captain Cameron Critchlow got his first goal of the playoffs with a shot from the slot that just trickled past Will. In the third rookie Nathan MacKinnon was pulled down heading to the net and awarded a penalty shot. The 16-year-old made it look easy, scoring his third of the playoffs and putting the Herd up 4-0.
With five minutes to go, James Melindy scored the Wildcats only goal on the night. Moncton has only been able to score two goals in two games — both scored by Melindy.
The Mooseheads were without defenseman Konrad Abeltschauser. The team’s plus-minus leader got word Saturday afternoon that he’d serve a two game suspension for a hit during Friday night’s game on Patrick Delisle-Houde.
The two teams have Sunday off as the series heads to Moncton for games three and four Monday and Tuesday. The Wildcats will be staring down a 2-0 game deficit in the best-of-seven series.
