For a great cause!

April 19th, 2012

It’s an event I look forward to doing every year, it’s called the Calgary Food Bank’s “Empty Bowl Benefit.” I learned a staggering fact yesterday that 40% of Calgarians that use the Food Bank each year are Children. That shouldn’t happen. In a city with so much wealth and prosperity, that’s on all of us. We need to change that. Local celebrities went down to 12th st. SE yesterday to paint their piece of pottery of choice. Last year my wife helped us out. She is very artsy, and it was awesome to have her. This year it was just Billie Jo and myself. Thank God Billie Jo had a plan. We call it a “piece” because it sounds artsy, but really it’s more like a small serving dish. A white plate that we sponge painted and put stickers on (only to take them off later). Think cubed cheese and meat. That’s what you will use our plate for. All of the bowls/plates etc go online next week and you can help by bidding on them. Sure, it won’t be the nicest piece of pottery in your collection, but remember you’re helping a good cause for our city. That part will make you feel good! :)

Banff…..Ahhhhhh!!!

April 16th, 2012

Banff is awesome, yes it is. Every once in a while our family decides it’s time to head west and spend the night in Banff. Ok, it happens way more than once in a while, but being crazy busy like everyone else on the weekend, it’s tough to get away. This weekend we did. When we got there Friday, we couldn’t believe there was no snow. Shouldn’t have said anything, it snowed the rest of the weekend. It was a warm snow! LOL Perfect for hiking and seeing all the wildlife foot prints in the snow. How awesome are the mountains?! I know I say that all the time, but it’s true. We hiked around tunnel mountain, the pathways around Banff Springs hotel and Grassi Lakes in Canmore. This summer I want to do a ton of hiking in the Rockies.
We had lunch at Coyotes in Banff. Have you been there? A buddy of mine told me about it, and now we’re hooked. All FRESH ingredients. It rocks! Other than that, played lots of mini sticks with my son in the hotel and watched a lot of NHL playoffs. How weird is it Pittsburgh and Vancouver could be out?! I’m not too sad about Vancouver! LOL

My son makes me laugh. He is the most adorable human being on this planet, but with candy he makes me laugh. Who doesn’t love the idea of dressing up to get free candy at Halloween?! My son does, and he collects lots. He just never eats it. Just yesterday I threw out his Halloween candy from 7 months ago. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t still good. At the same time I threw out last years Easter Candy. I give him credit, before most things he eats he asks if its healthy. Deep in the back of his mind I wonder if that’s why he doesn’t gobble down his candy. Easter Sunday after collecting all the eggs the Easter Bunny left for him, we then had to separate them all and count how many of each he got. The final count was 119 after finding one behind a speaker yesterday. Even though he decides not to eat them, it’s tough for me to dip in there when the inventory controls are so tight. It’s tighter than airport security. Maybe it’s time to get my own. They are 1/2 price now! Nah, I’ll just be throwing mine out in 6 months too. There’s something about having it that makes you smile. Eating it makes you feel too guilty!

Happy Easter Monday!

April 9th, 2012

How is it that 3 day weekends feel as long as 2 days?! It was a nice break though, wasn’t it? If you’re wondering when the next long weekend is, you’re going to have to wait a bit. 42 sleeps as a matter of fact as Victoria Day is 6 weeks from today. It’s a bit of a stretch.
I had a chance to take my little brother through big brothers to the Flames game on Thursday night. It was so nice to see the boys beat Vancouver?! Makes you wonder what is up for our hockey team in the off season when it comes to Iginla and Kipper?! What will our team look like next year?!
Friday night I was at my usual post as the voice of the Calgary Roughnecks. Have you been to a Roughnecks lacrosse game yet?! Once you go, you will go to every game. It’s addictive! Saturday we did a community Easter Egg Hunt, Sunday we did church and an easter egg hunt (along with dinner), and that was it. Lots packed into a weekend. And now today we start Spring Hockey for my son. Already?! Hopefully you have today off, slept in and are enjoying the beautiful sunshine coming our way. Here’s hoping you had a great easter. Is the easter chocolate on sale yet?!

Hockey’s over. Sniff!

April 3rd, 2012

Wow, that was a whirlwind weekend. This weekend we had our final Novice hockey tournament in Ponoka, Ab… about 35 minutes north of Red Deer. I think I filled up my gas tank 3 times, and it’s not small. 135 litres! Our hotel was in Red Deer, so we made that drive back and forth all weekend long. Not to mention driving back to Calgary Saturday for the Roughnecks game and then drop my family at home Sunday night before driving to Banff for the Kelly Ripa show and our live broadcast Monday morning. I put a few kms on my truck, but it was all worth it and fun.
Sunday we played in the Gold medal game of our tournament at 4pm in Ponoka. The kids had battled hard all weekend and were getting a chance to play for their 6th Gold Medal this year. Although we were up 4-2 after 2 periods, the other team came out screaming in the third and beat us 6-5. I have never been more proud as a coach. Wins are nice, but to see our kids rally their guts out and work so hard as a team. There were tears at the end. I told them we might have lost a hockey game, but don’t ever lose being such great kids. I would take these 16 kids over anybody. I’m gonna miss them dearly. In fact I shed a few tears on the way home from the tournament knowing a great thing was over.

Hockey Tourney!

March 30th, 2012

So… what’s up this weekend? We are off for our last hockey tournament of the year in Red Deer. It’s been an awesome year, but after 45 games, 6 tournaments and over 100 ice times total, all good things must come to an end. We have had an amazing year. So cool as a coach to see the kids develop throughout the year, and come to the rink with a smile on their face. As everybody else is debating the age to introduce body checking in hockey, we focus on fun skill development in Novice. Do the kids ever remember the games when they play in a tournament? Sure, they’re fun, but it’s more about time at the pool, mini stick games, pizza parties, pushing every button on the elevator etc. I can’t wait. We have a great group of parents, and for us, it’s about a few drinks and breaking down the game we just played. LOL Too fun.
I zip back tomorrow night to work the Calgary Roughnecks game as PA announcer, and then back to Red Deer I go.
Don’t forget about earth hour tomorrow night, and of course April Fools on Sunday. Keep your head up! LOL

Gap toothed kid!

March 28th, 2012

My son lost both his front teeth the other day. It looks hilarious. His new nickname is “gappy.” The first thing I thought of was for him to recite “Sally sells sea she shells” to us. There’s no big lisp. Kinda disappointing. I thought we were going to have a Cindy Brady moment. It looks super cute though.

He then started questioning how much the tooth fairy would be leaving him. He got $10 for his first ever tooth, and then $5 for each of his next 2. He thought there might be some kind of bonus situation triggered if he put 2 teeth behind his pillow. I like the way he thinks, knowing two teeth at once would be a rare thing. Low and behold, it was 2, $5 bills. He was happy with that.

We have a hockey tournament this weekend and I told him he now looks like a hockey player more than ever. A cool looking game face with that boig open mouth smile! The song “All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth” has been playing in a loop inside my head. I don’t know how fast teeth grow, will he still have the double-gap come Christmas? I have been taking a TON of pictures. It’s so cute. I guess we won’t be having corn on the cob anytime soon!

Calgary the beautiful!

March 27th, 2012

I grew up in Southern Ontario. I was born in Ottawa and grew up in a town west of Toronto called Burlington. It’s an amazing little place. Ok, it used to be little, my town now has a couple hundred thousand people. That’s where my dad, step mom, sisters, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews all live.
Last week we were in Toronto for Canadian Music week. Toronto has always been one of my favourite cities. There is so much to do from sports teams, great restaurants, amazing shows etc etc etc. It’s a busy town for sure with over 4 million people in the city alone. Having said all that, Friday after the conference I was so happy to come back to Calgary. Sometimes simplicity and beauty win out every time. I know Calgary is growing by leaps and bounds, but it somehow maintains its small town feel. I love that. And the mountains… Ahhhhhhh. That is the reason we are here. Is there anything more beautiful in the world than taking a drive between the mountains?! Even heading down Barlow, Deerfoot or Memorial with that view out your window. That view doesn’t suck.
I remember the first time we moved to Calgary in 2000, I couldn’t wait to move away from here. Then, after a few months, something kicks in. You don’t ever want to leave. If you just moved to Calgary and aren’t that enamoured yet, give it time. Trust me. That feeling will kick in. It has to, it always does. There is no more comforting feeling in the world than when you fly home, are about to land at the Calgary airport, and get that feeling of being home. This is the greatest place in the world to live, and we’re all very lucky. The town of Radium, BC has the sign we should all live by, “Mountains shall bring peace to the people.”

Shamrock Yum!

March 14th, 2012

The Shamrock shake is back!! Whoooo Hoooooo! I remember when we lived in Winnipeg, for some reason, The McDonald’s there didn’t carry them, so we drove to Grand Forks, North Dakota to get them. Road trip for Shamrock shakes!! It was totally worth it. They are soo good. What does their advertising say? Only for a wee time. I like it. I grabbed one at Country Hills McDonalds the other day. Amazing! Only 3 sleeps until St. Paddy’s Day. Enjoy!

What a weekend!!

March 12th, 2012

Hope you had a fun weekend, albeit a little shorter than normal with the time change thing happening. Why does that happen on a weekend again?! Ha ha
It was a fun sports weekend. Friday we saw the Flames take down the Jets, the building was electric! Saturday I worked the Calgary Roughnecks game as I do their PA, the Calgary Hitmen won two games and have now clinched a playoff spot too. Fun! In between all that we had a Novice hockey tournament at Winsport. One of the biggest tournaments in the city. It was stressful. LOL Two games in a row we had a shootout. The parents were holding their breath, and a few moms even cried after we won in a shootout to go to the Gold medal game. Yesterday afternoon was the Gold medal game at the fancy arena. The same arena that Team Canada practices in with thousands of seats all the way around. It was a thrill for the kids. Coaches too. We won, and as a parent of one, and coach to 16, I’m super proud of them. 16 unique personalities came together when it mattered most. They’re awesome!
