Do the Jays need to sign or trade for a leadoff man now that Scutaro’s gone, or is there someone on the team or in the system who you think can do the job next year? When Scutaro was injured at the end of the year they used Bautista there, but he won’t be an everyday player next year.
MW: I hope you’re right. I would think that the lead-off man may wind up being someone who comes over in a Roy Halladay trade (Erick Aybar? Michael Taylor?) or – if it were up to me and he’s still here – Lyle Overbay.
Mike…If everyone in my area that didn’t shovel their walk were Blue Jays season ticket holders, their attendance woes would be over..It’s not a pretty sight to see a miniature poodle disappearing in snow drifts…Mike..Does Andy Pettitte get selected to the Hall of Fame if he retired tomorrow? (But I know he did re-sign with N.Y.)
Lyle Overbay batting first??..Yes the reining Jays 8 million dollar SO king at the lead off position..Yea that makes me want to buy season tickets..*sigh*
The best lead-off man the Jays could have had this year was shipped to the Cubs for a bag of nothing by your good buddy J.P Riccardi..Yea the same dreaded Riccardi that you think left this franchise in good shape..
Reed Johnson would look pretty good in the lead off position right now huh?..Released by boy genius Riccardi to accommodate graybeard Shannon Stewart and his 1.5 mil charity salary..Yes sir this was an astute move..One of many good moves by Riccardi..They promptly released Stewart on Aug. 11th while Johnson was batting .300 with an OBP of .365..
Not that Johnson would be a mainstay there but a cheap one..Once again proving Riccardi was a total waste of time..
MW: Ahhh, how conveniently you leave out the fact that Johnson was a platoon player for the Cubs while he put up those numbers, and hit just .280/.323/.398 against righties that year. And then hit .255/.330/.412 overall in 2009. Great outfielder, tremendous hustle, super scrappy? Absolutely. Great lead-off man? Not a chance. However, he would be one if he got on base nearly as often as Overbay does.
Maybe Johnson becomes last years Marco Scutaro..Reed had a great year in 2006 .319/.390/.479..A career .344 OBP isn’t too shabby at all and only 19 points less then Overbays..
Ahhh, Overbay was basically a platoon player last year right?? He didn’t exactly blow the cover off the ball against them lefties did he??
He really doesn’t challenge the pitcher at all while he is on base..Most good lead off men give the pitchers something think about..Look at Jacoby Ellsbury..This guy gives pitchers fits while he is on base and may be the reason Pedroia gets some good pitches to hit..Overbay posses none of that..Johnson isn’t exactly the best either but I’d rather see him playing and hustling his butt off then watching Overbay slug around collecting 8 mil ..
MW: Overbay was a platoon player, but he hits right-handed pitching. Johnson hits left-handed pitching, which you don’t see nearly as much. The two of them would be a great leadoff platoon, though I’d hit Reed lower in the order against lefties because he tends to hit for a high average with a bit of pop, so you want guys on base for him. Overbay doesn’t even challenge the pitcher a tiny little bit when he’s on base – but he’s on base.
Mike,
I feel that the Jays should take a run at Brad Hawpe, if he is available. What do you think?
MW: I don’t like his defense, but I like his bat. The problem is that if he’s traded, he’s a free agent after 2010, so what’s really the point?

- Jack OYou are right, just a few clicks and we can make a difference!
Tom Cheek deserves the induction.
Good job Mike.
MW: Good job to all those of you who are voting!
- Joe P.If that is the official vote, Tom Cheek is ahead by a wide margin.
Go Tom!
MW: He’s ahead, but we have to keep him there. Extend the margin!

- ray bOverbay is not as bad as so many people make him out to be and he has a great glove.
MW: He’s much, much better than so many people make him out to be.
