12:10 AM Eastern

Yes, folks, it’s that time again!  Starting at 10:00 AM Eastern on December 1st, voting is open to the public to help form the final ballot of the Ford C. Frick Award for Broadcasting Excellence.  The winner goes into the broadcasters’ wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.  Each year, I beseech you to cast your ballot for Tom Cheek, and I’m doing so again.

Please go to the Hall of Fame’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/baseballhall to vote – and please do it every day.

The top three vote-getters in the month-long balloting process are guaranteed a spot on the final ballot of 10 that is presented to the Frick committee, which votes in the winner who will be given his due in the same ceremony as the players voted in by the writers, the veterans committee honorees and the winner of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award, who goes into the writers’ wing of the Hall of Fame.

With your help, there could be a real Toronto flavour to this year’s ceremony, since Roberto Alomar is likely to be elected by the writers, and there’s a good chance that Bob Elliott of The Sun will win the Spink.

I don’t really need to make the case for Tom Cheek to win the Frick, but I’m going to anyway.  He was the original voice of the Blue Jays, not missing a day of work from Opening Day in the snow on April 7, 1977 until June of 2004, when he took a couple of days off to attend the funeral of his father.  A week later, he was diagnosed with the brain tumour that took his life about a year and a half later.  Tom broadcast 4,306 straight games over the course of his streak (and that’s regular-season only, lest you forget about all the spring training, playoff and all-star games) and in so doing became the voice not only of baseball in Canada, but the voice of summer as well.

His familiar booming baritone was unmistakeable and I know that for me, that first time I heard him every spring, he brought happiness and comfort, as well as excitement that a new baseball season was beginning.

We all know the great calls – from the first division championship in ’85 to Dave Stieb’s no-hitter, “Timlin to Carter” and, of course, “Touch ‘Em All, Joe”, but to so many of us Tom was much, much more than just a voice on the radio.  He was a real part of our lives, part of our families, part of what made us feel the most at home.

I’m trying not to get too sappy here, but it’s impossible for me not to.  Sorry about that.

I first had the honour of meeting Tom in 1988, when I was working for U of T radio and struck up a coversation in the Exhibition Stadium press box with the late Len Bramson who, unbeknownst to me,  was the man who not only hired Tom, but Jerry Howarth, too, and who was the architect of the original Blue Jays radio network.  Mr. Bramson asked if I would like to go into the broadcast booth after the game to meet Tom and Jerry and I jumped at the chance.

It was amazing, they were both gracious and happy to welcome me into their fraternity (such as it was for me), with none of us imagining (you can read that as dreaming on my end) that we would be working together 13 years later.

The first game I did as part of the crew with Tom and Jerry was Opening Day 2002 at Fenway Park.  An injured Chris Carpenter and an ineffective Pedro Martinez matched up in what turned out to be an ugly day for pitchers, with the Jays coming out on top 12-11.  I had to look up the score (I thought it was 13-12), because I only really remember a couple of things from that game.  The first was just before the first pitch, when Tom turned to me and said, very forcefully, that the microphones were always open.  That if I had something to contribute, to not be shy and go ahead and say it, that I was part of the team.  The second was in the ninth, when the Red Sox brought in Ugueth Urbina and I told the story of Urbina and his brothers, each of whom have the initials U.U.U. Tom liked it, and gave me a look that showed me he was impressed – which meant the world to me.

Looking back, it’s really too bad that what’s a great Day One On The Job With Two Legends story turns out to involve a guy who’s now in prison for pouring gasoline on a bunch of people who worked for him and also trying to hack them to death with a machete.  But I digress.

The more we worked together, the more I grew to admire Tom – his pre-game singing voice, his mischievous streak, his class, his kindness, his generosity.  He was an amazing human being.

I have only called one major-league home run in my broadcasting career, and it’s because  Tom refused to take the microphone back from me on the day he was honoured at the Dome back in 2005.  He insisted that I do the entire first inning, despite the fact that he arrived back in the booth in the top of the first after making his way up from the ceremony – over my strenuous objections both on the air and off – and Reed Johnson led off the bottom of the first with a home run.  I’m forever grateful to him for that. Tom, not Reed, but Reed too, I guess.

There’s no question that Tom was an all-time great broadcaster and that he’s deserving of the Frick Award.  The fact that he’s no longer with us isn’t a reason to cast your vote for him, the reason is that the acknowledgment of an incredible career is long, long overdue.

I’ve said before that it was shameful that Tom wasn’t given the award in ’05, when he could have enjoyed it – he’d have been thoroughly overwhelmed by the honour.  Heck, he didn’t even think he was worthy of his name being raised to the Blue Jays’ Level of Excellence at the Dome.  I was standing with him in the Blue Jays’ dugout when he noticed the tarp covering a piece of the Level on Tom Cheek Day and he realized what was under it.  He just kept shaking his head in a combination of disbelief, modesty and embarrassment.

It’s too late for that now, but certainly far from too late to get him the Frick that he so tremendously deserves.  It would be incredible to see his widow Shirley (just as wonderful a human being as her late husband, it must be noted) up on that podium in Cooperstown accepting the award on Tom’s behalf. Tom Cheek was an incredible broadcaster and an even better person.  He deserves this, and you can help.  Please vote for Tom every day throughout the month of December – he touched us all, and now we can return the favour.  Thank you so much.

And once Tom is in, we can get to work on Jerry!

Rational, reasonable comments are always welcome.  There are over 100 in the hopper waiting to be answered, and I’ll do so Tuesday morning – thanks also to those of you who made suggestions on what to do with my short time in San Francisco, what a great city!

You have to allow “your profile information, photos, your friends’ info, and other content that it requires to work”. That strikes me as ridiculous. Not to mention that you have to have a Facebook account in the first place.

What was wrong with the way they’ve done this every other year?

MW: Evidently the Hall of Fame’s website is undergoing a renovation, so that’s why they’re doing it this way.

    Hi Mike
You bet I will vote for Tom, as many times as my fingers and the system will allow.
You may be tired of this subject but I got to address it again.
If the Jays are in a “build” mode and trade Doc to the Yankees, how does that help them?
Is it not true that Doc, CC and AJ would make the Yankees uncatchable in the next 4 to 5 years? Can the Jays wait that long?
Your thoughts to help calm my feers.

MW: Halladay is only under contract for one more year.

Many thanks for this, as always Mike. Will make sure to vote daily. Will one need a Facebook account to do so?

MW: As it turns out, yes.

    Mike,

You make a great case for Mr. Cheek. Thanks for the reminder; he’ll get a vote a day from me.

    MW: Thank you!

You hit the nail on the head, Mike. What an incredible broadcaster he was. I was born 3 years after the Blue Jays began so Tom was not only the voice of baseball and summer, for me he was also the voice of my youth.

I’m getting sick of this December tradition, though. Let’s finally get it done once and for all so that we can relax, knowing one of the great broadcasters has finally been given his due.

I’ll be voting every day from home, work and my girlfriend’s computer.

MW: Glad to hear it! Thank you!

    Mike.

I noticed on the list that Jerry Howarth and Don Chevrier are on it. Tom deserves it, no question, but I hope Jerry Howarth and Don Chevrier will win it in the future. They are excellent broadcasters in their own right. Is it possible to vote for them as well as Tom, or is it one vote only a day? I will vote every day.

    Peter, St.Catharines

MW: I think you can vote for as many as you want every day, but I would ask that we just concentrate on Tom until we get him in.

Mike….Nothing’s too much trouble for Tom Cheek, the voice of my youth, as Mike you along with Jerry and Alan, are now now the voice of my youth, unfortunately that youth is multiplied times 4 or 5 now.

    Hi Mike,
Voting on facebook is actually a great promo tool. Once you vote, the application will ask if you wish to publish it to your friends or your profile which creates a pyramid effect…..so make sure those Tom Cheek voters publish the results ! Kevin.

MW: WAR is not the be-all and end-all, though I won’t go so far as to say it’s good for absolutely nothing.

Why would you say this. WARP and Win Shares takes into account a player’s hitting, fielding, base running, hitting environement, and position played in determining his value. What better measure is there to compare players at different positions playing at different ball parks.

I would say that WARP is the best statistic we have to compare players and should be used to evaluate trades, MVP awards, Cy Young awards, ROY awards, and Hall of Fame consideration.

Why would you denigrate this stat? Do you know something that the sabremetric does not? Do you have an alternative/better method?

MW: So by saying it’s not the be-all and end-all, I’m denigrating the stat? NO metric is a perfect measurement that tells you everything you need to know.

Here’s my favourite expression Tom used to say during broadcasts. I don’t think I’ve ever heard Jerry or anyone else use it since. Whenever the Jays were down by a run late in the game he would say they were looking for “a bloop and a blast”.

I love that saying and still say it my kids as they sit with me at the games. Too bad it used to be a much more frequent occurrence they would get that bloop and the blast.

    Mike,
I concur with all your thoughts about Tom. He was the voice of many summers for me, especially in the days before every game was on t.v. His world series calls still give me goosebumps.
Currently he is in the top three of voting, but we must keep up the vote as two or three others are close.

Mike, that was a great blog for a great man, I have to admit that it brought some tears to the eyes as does the sound of Mr Cheeks voice whenever I am lucky enough to hear it in a replay(usually the Touch Em’ Joe call) I just cast my first vote and notice that as of right now Mr Cheek has the 2nd most votes. So incase people just skip right by the blog itself and just read the coments VOTE FOR TOM. I think I might just have to create a group on Facebook for this reason.

    Thanks again Mike

MW: If you think it’ll help – definitely create a Facebook group!

I will certainly be voting for Tom numerous times.

I see the list of players not offerred arbitration is now official..and i see some possible bargains out there.

How’s this for an alternate plan to that originally posed by AA??

Go for it..one year..pull out all the stops. He says he has no “hard salary limits” but does not want to be saddles with long term deals.

well i feel that in this economy, much like last year, there will be more than a few of these guys willing to take a one year deal if you offer them alot. those one year deals will not in any way interfere with AA’s long terms plans..and they will not cost you any draft picks since these guys were not offerred arb. in the first place.

ALL this is based on not being able to get adequate return from Doc in trade this offseason, in light of the fact that his agent has said doc will veto any trade attempted after the offseason.
that being the case…keep roy…go for it all in one last blaze of glory and then let him go and get the two draft picks come years end.

heres what i would do in light of the guys avaiable at no cost other than money.

    1. catcher: 1 year deal for molina…can hit in his sleep for a catcher.

    2. DH: 1 year deal toMatsui…he’s out there..nontendered.

    3. OF bat: either damon or dye…1 year deals..since the idea is going for it for ONE year, snider cannot be relied upon ..an alternate is requisite.

    4. IF/pinch hitter O dog hudson. he can play second..one could possibly give him a shot at third. at the very least, a late innich pinch hitter/runner.

    5. sp: bedard…

    6. sp: Randy wolfe.

Id guess this will cost about 34-40 million dollars added to the cost of the payroll going in. and its just one year committment, no loss of draft picks….no diversion from the long term planned course with the exception of perhaps giving snider fewer at bats.

    DO IT AA!

So Roy Halladay has taken a page out of the JP Ricciardi Handbook. He’s talked to the US media first. I can’t blame him. After what happened last July I think he’s fully justified in his actions.

    Mike,

I’ve been thinking a little lately about how classy a guy Halladay is.

Is it just me or has Toronto been lucky to have a greater number of genuinely nice guys? Halladay, Johnny Mac, Sal Fasano all come to mind off the top of my head.

MW: I’m pretty sure every team has it’s share of really nice guys.

A huge thank you to Mike for posting such a nice letter urging “FANS” that it was that time of year again to vote for Tom for the Frick Award. I would like to thank everyone in Toronto and across Canada as well as the US …..(yes, there are many who are voting in the US)

With Tom’s record he does deserve this award !

    Shirley Cheek

MW: Without question. And Mrs. C., it is us who are honoured every time you drop a note here. No thank you’s are needed, honestly. Nothing I could ever do could even begin to repay what Tom did for me.

    Mike,

If Robbie, Bob and/or Tom get the nod this year, i’m proposing to organize 100 greyhound buses, load them up with Blue Jay Faithfuls and take ‘em down to Cooperstown for the Induction weekend! What a sight it would be to see that sea of blue and white gather down there and celebrate the induction of three Toronto Baseball Legends.

I’m sure anyone that has been to one of these “famed” weekenks will agree that it’s something that all baseball fans should experience atleast once.

I’d like to think the reason that Tom and Bob haven’t been inducted in yet is because the baseball Gods were waiting for the first Blue Jay cap to be bronzed.

I hope 2010 is the year.

    Mike,
Next year is going to be brutal. So far it looks like AA wants to pattern the Jays after the KC Royals. Of course, a $75MM payroll in the AL EAST is a recipe for losing that may prove to be as grim as my football team, the Cleveland Browns. I swear I must have been wicked in a previous life to deserve this.
    –Cleveland Mark

MW: You must have. How is it that Alex wants to build “KC Lite” in Toronto?

    Hey Mike,

Do you think the Jays would/should sign Russell Branyan? I think he’d be reasonably inexpensive and a great fit for the everyday DH. Then Lind could play LF and Snider would go to RF. Or maybe Encarnacion could play LF, Lind could DH, and Branyan could play 3B. Or any other combination that sees Russell The Muscle playing everyday. What are your thoughts?

    Thanks!

MW: I would love to see Russel the Muscle here, but not to play every day – he can’t hit left-handed pitching. If the Jays wind up dealing Lyle Overbay, then Russell would be a fine replacement at less than half the price.

Actually, I’m very glad to see that the voting’s being done through Facebook. Last year’s flimsy voting form caused a lot of problems… to the point at which I can’t help but think it was one cause of Tom’s shockingly low vote totals.

Facebook certainly has its annoyances, but it’s a great way to enforce the one-vote-a-day rule without relying on faulty technology.

Not only am I voting Daily with my Facebook account, I have commandeered my Wife’s account for voting as well. I would also encourage everyone else to ustilize as many accounts as possible!

Also: one of the good features of the Facebook voting system is that it allows you to see the vote standings. At 10am this morning, Tom was leading all vote getters with 28% of the vote.

    Let’s go people!

    Hey Mike,

I am going to St. Petersburg/Clearwater during the holidays, and I was wondering if you had any fun suggestions for us.. You always point out things like the NASA launch or the Tampa Aquarium.. And I was wondering if you had any “must do” on your list?

    Thanks,

    Steve

MW: I’m rarely there that time of year, so I don’t really know if there are any extra-special holiday season things that go on. The Aquarium in Clearwater (on Island Way) between Clearwater and Clearwater Beach is well worth seeing, as is Clearwater Beach itself. There’s the touristy stuff, too, like Busch Gardens, Treasure Island and all that sort of stuff. Most of my expertise comes in finding places to eat, though.

MW: I’m voting with my wife’s profile, and I’m not sure how the clock works. I’ve gotten a few different results.

    Mike,

Why would the Jays waive Joe Inglett? Yes, he has little pop, but his career OBP is a respectable .349, while his career average is .281. Pithily, he was the best lead-off man they against righties. I know that he has only 639 career at-bats. But, in my view, he deserved the chance.

MW: Amazing how service time works, doesn’t it? The Jays saw Inglett as a guy they’d love to have, the perfect 25th/26th guy on a roster, but he was out of options and they needed to clear space in order to have a shot at pulling in a Rule 5er.

    - Jake Roth
  31. 31.

Please Paul and Alex, don’t tell us you are trying to improve the team. The players that gave us the best effort and bang for the buck,we don’t even want them back (Scuaro and Barajas). They want to come back and we don’t want them.We want more draft picks, and then they don’t sign with us. The good replacement for every position Joe Inglett we just let go. It’s Overbay,Bautista,Encarnacion,Wells that need to be replaced. Also we need to get some pitching. Next year’s attendance will be even worse if the Jays don’t get some free agents. Their is too much lying coming from Jay land. Even Paul Beaston, his second time around, is just milking this job.It took him 1 yr to hire himself full time. A wasted year.
He should go out and get some free agents. He should be trying to compete with the Yankees or get into another division. The league should have a balanced schedule.Every one should play the Yankees and Red Sox the same number of times. If they were in the other divisions they would have had better chances of winning a division. The fans are fed up. Read our Lips.

MW: You’re a bit all over the place with this. The fans have every right to be fed up, no question, but the answer isn’t to bring back Scutaro and Barajas, and trading Wells is a pipe dream.

    - Angelo
  32. 32.

So this isn’t related to Tom, but it’s a bit of a let down that Joe Inglett is gone…

    your thoughts?

i know the team can’t stay the same – but Joe wasn’t hurting us was he?

MW: No, he wasn’t, but he’s a very replaceable guy.

    - Andrew Sorlie
  33. 33.

    Hi Mike

You bet I’ll vote for Tom. I do also have an off topic question. Since Scutaro has just signed with the Red Sox, I was wondering what would happen if Boston also brought back Bay. Bay is a higher ranked free agent than Scutaro so would that bump the draft pick that the Blue Jays would receive to the second round, or would that not happen seeing as Bay was with the Red Sox last year?

    Hope your enjoying the off-season.

MW: The Red Sox wouldn’t receive compensation from themselves for signing Bay. Jays fans should hope that Bay stays in Boston, because that gives the Jays a chance to actually get the Sox’ 1st-rounder in June.

    - Adam
  34. 34.

    Hey Mike,

I keep hearing that Alex Gonzalez is a great defensive Shortstop, but then I also hear that he commits a ton of errors, and that in one year(I believe 2001)he lead Major League Shortstops woth 26 errors. Can you help me out here? Also, do you expect Marco Scutaro to play as well, or near as well as he did this year in Boston, or will this year end up being a fluke? And you better believe I will be voting for Tom until my fingers fall off!

MW: Counting errors is a terrible way to assess defense. Let’s say Billy McWhiffleface plays a full season at shortstop and makes six errors, but Bobby Hossenpfeffer makes 30 errors over a full season, while also fielding 60 more chances than McWhiffleface. Who would you rather have? I don’t expect Scutaro to have a good year at all – I expect him to have a really hard time with the plantar fasciitis.

We all need to vote for Tom. I sat with my late mother watching TV and listening to his “touch’em all Joe” call – she and I also sat together and watched Bill Mazeroski’s

MW: Well put. Get out and vote!

    - Errol
  36. 36.

I love Doc, and admire him for everything he’s done for the team thus far..but i gotta say, he and his agents are acting like a bunch of a-holes lately. Allegedly, Docs been rejecting a series of deals (to Minny, Texas, Brews) for not being competitive enough. Now hes rejecting teams like the Dodgers and Angels cuz they dont have spring training in Florida; essentially, only leaving the Sox and Yanks as potential suitors…well too F-ing bad Doc…if family is his priority, than stick with the situation u have and shut up…He wants to maintain and be around his current residence, he demands an immidiate 100 mill+ extension, and he demands it be one of the top 3 teams in the league…just for that, I hope he endures another year of blue jay mediocrity

MW: You’re allowing yourself to get very upset about reports that you don’t even know are true (and are likely not). There’s no question Halladay would like to be with a team that holds spring training around the Tampa area, but that’s not just the Yankees and Red Sox, it’s also the Phillies, Orioles, Rays, Tigers, Braves, Astros and – to a lesser extent – Red Sox and Twins. I don’t think he’d turn down a deal to the Angels or Dodgers because they train in Arizona, though. He’s not going to demand an immediate 100+ million dollar extension.

Mike what a great blog, Tom Cheek was the best..no need to comment further. As to the Jays….letting Inglett go was a bit of a disapointment, but I guess Alex deemed him expendable. Gonzalez dosen’t exactly thrill me either, keep Johnny Mac at short and spend some cash on a 1st baseman or right fielder. (lind can play 1st Snider can play lf and a free agent can patrol rf) I’ve voted for Tom as well, a couple of times and it’s a shame he’s not in yet, hate to think because it’s he worked in Canada but to me there’s no other reason than that. Take care and have a good off season

MW: Thanks, I can’t think of another reason, either.

This is a memorable quote from ‘Alice Through The Looking-Glass’:

“The rule is, jam to-morrow and jam yesterday – but never jam to-day.’”

I’m beginning to feel as if the Blue Jays are owned and run by the White Queen. And have been owned and run by her ever since Labatt’s sold the club in her direction. Interbrew was just a front and so is Rogers.

We’ve had Jam Yesterday until we were sick of it. The Jays, we were told, were being built to contend in 2006. They didn’t.. Then 2007. Payroll was upped and big stars were bought. 2007 didn’t pan out so there was 2008 which didn’t go too well either. So in 2009 we switched to Jam Tomorrow. We would pay for free agents and contend in 2010, and we’d rebuild in 2009. But 2009 was a devastating mess and the 2010 season is just around the corner. We’re told that the team won’t do too much next season because–Jam Tomorrow!–they’ll maybe contend in 2011.

I have supported a rebuild. I know the team has very little choice. But I wish just once the Blue Jays fans could have Jam Today. Because I think we sorely need it and I also think we deserve it. A fanbase can starve to death on a regular diet of Jam Yesterday and Jam Tomorrow.

MW: The whole point of a rebuild – or a “build”, as it were – is so that the fans can have jam every day for a long time.

Mike…Would a guy like Sidney Crosby have been eligible for that Sports Illustrated award that Jeter won? Is it a “U.S. born” trophy or for anyone to win? If it was for anyone to win, I would’ve liked Crosby or Malkin to have won it…Two very young guys who defeated the defending Stanley Cup champs, against the odds.

MW: Anyone can win, but you have to play a sport that people actually notice in the U.S.

    Hey Mike,

Just voted for Tom and will keep doing so daily. Glad the whole Halladay thing is over and I actually look forward to next season. But then again I always look forward to the baseball season

I agree with what you said on the bullpen the other day, in that I think we will see Halladay down the road again some day and I’m not referring to when the Phillies come to T.O.

Keep up the good work and never stop serving it up to the fans that call you with dumb ass comments and question.

MW: He’s unsure of his new role, too. I’m not sure why you thought this was the right place to comment about Jamie.

I just stumbled accross your blog, and immediately submitted my vote.
Heck, I’d vote Tom for Pope, and I’m not even Catholic.
Just one thing though. Why, at this point in the month is there only 161 votes for Tom?
He trails his rival by 12 votes.
With all the folks on here saying they are voting every day, I expected a MUCH higher number.
    C’mon folks, let’s get’r done.
    Dan

MW: The vote totals seem to reset on a regular basis. I only hope someone at the Hall of Fame is keeping track of the results of all the polls.
