3:15 PM Eastern
Well, I finally got to go to Yankee Stadium to see a baseball game, only there was no baseball game to see. No batting practice, not much of anything, actually. I did get to see Dustin McGowan throw a side in the bullpen and a few people play catch in the outfield, but those were the only baseball activities on display today.
What I don’t get is this: How on Earth can you have a rainout when it doesn’t even rain? A fine mist was falling pretty much from 11:00 AM on, but it stopped at 2:15 or so, about 20 minutes before the game was postponed. I’m guessing that when Joe Girardi and Brian Cashman took their walk in short right field, they decided that it was too wet out there to risk injury. The bad news is, it’s not going to be any better tomorrow, when the forecast is calling for thunderstorms and a 90% chance of rain during the day. The good news is that you all may have another rain delay/rainout show to look forward to.
I have to hit the road tonight so that I’m back in the studio for the game tomorrow evening, so my two night trip to NYC has turned into one night here and one in Albany or Utica – maybe Syracuse. Now there’s a hopping town for you. At least I’ll be back here in July for the all-star game, when there will be some actual baseball played here.
Newswise, the Jays are so close to signing Alex Rios to that six-year, $65 million deal that the two sides have extended the deadline a few days. I’m thinking that the home opener would be the perfect time to make that announcement.
Lastly, the Barry Bonds topic came up on the rain delay show, and I believe that if Matt Stairs’ hip is going to be a long-term problem, it is incumbent upon the Blue Jays to make an effort to sign Barry Bonds. Circus or otherwise, he would be a big, lefthanded bat in the middle of the line-up, which is exactly what they need, even moreso with Stairs out, and he can play left field just as well as Manny Ramirez does in Boston. If Bonds only wants to DH, or if he doesn’t want to play on turf, or if his being under indictment brings up some issues with crossing the border, then fine, don’t sign him. But if not, then let’s go.
Comments are encouraged, and I’ll answer them from upstate New York if I can.

Wow… signing Bonds is a great idea… but I’m actually more concerned with the our bullpen. Without Janssen and Ryan a question mark, I’m worried about our depth.
MW: The depth is pretty deep. Even without Ryan and Janssen there are still Accardo, Downs, League, Frasor, Wolfe and Tallet. No superduperstar (yet) but a very solid six-pack, and there aren’t many teams, if any, that can say that.
- Franklin RubinsteinHi Mike I was on hold during your rain delay/out showed today unfortunatly my boss came back to the office while i was on hold and I had to hang up. I just wanted to congradulate you on the Jays should sign Barry Bonds rant you went on. Its about time you started saying that I’ve read where lawyers have said there would be no problem getting Bonds trial delayed until after the season as for trouble with him getting into Canada I have no idea but the jays should have signed this guy already whats the ten million (im guessing) it would take to sign Bonds to Rogers Communication and he would give the jays the bat they need to get into the pose season even if he only plays 120 games.
- Dan MHey Mike,
No way J.P. tries to sign Bonds, not matter how bad Stairs hip is. They’ll take their chances with Buck Coats before they bring the circus to town
MW: Probably true, but a mistake.
- MarcYour crazy that we should sign Barry Bonds. Sure he a good player but he is a cancer in the locker room and he’s rude.
MW: So are a lot of other players who have won championships. And by the way, my crazy what?
- andrewBonds? Wow. I can only hope (and believe me, with the little faith I have in Blue Jays leadership, the hope is faint); that they would have the vision to see the backlash such a signing would cause.
I don’t care any longer if Bonds cheated. I no longer care about the circumstances, the knowns or the unknowns. I think he’s a bad apple. I think he’s proven himself to be a dividing force in a club house and he’s a lightening rod of negative attention that the rest of the team shouldn’t have to deal with.
Most importantly, I don’t like him. I don’t want to like him and I don’t want to cheer for him. I don’t want him on my team.
Unfortunately that probably means he’s already on a plane to Pearson.
Crap.
0-0 plus one rain out and its already going down hill.
- DougI’d sign Bonds 100%. He’d still be a top 3 leftfielder in the AL. Imagine Bonds’ .500 OBP ahead of Wells, Thomas and Rolen. Bonds isn’t Thomas slow either.
The Jays could use some press, I’m shocked Rogers doesn’t buy into the free publicity. I’d bet the attendance and TV ratings would skyrocket.
Is Ted all about maximizing publicity and profit?!?!?! That would explain the Wells signing.
- KarmanHow many AB’s does Frank’s ’09 deal vest at? I’d bet if he gets cold again early april that this becomes a bigger hot stove. And at 41 next year old ‘Tiny Ankles’ 10 mil deal won’t look any better next year.
I reckon Bonds won’t be whispered just in TO, no doubt plenty of teams will reconsider.
Swallowing pride to try and win a pennant is easy to do.
And heck, they put up a statue of Ty Cobb in Detroit right?
MW: Yes, they most certainly did. And Frank needs 376 plate appearances to vest 2009.
- mPBonds would defanetly fill some seats in TO but you can’t have 2 DH’s on one team! The reason why Manny can afford to play LF is because he playes half the seasons games at fenway where its only 310 at the foul pole. Plus he can run abit better than Bonds. Other than That I like Bonds. The media has done there best to make him look bad and the fans fall for it!
MW: Well, no, he IS a jerk. But that doesn’t matter.
- Matt from BCAwww, poor Yankees. Have to cancel a game during a drizzle. I guess they don’t want Derek “The Greatest SS Alive” Jeter breaking a nail.
MW: Bingo
- Brandon in TorontoIf they don’t care about defence. They want offense. Then go and get Bonds. Make sure the guys in the Jays Clubhouse keep him in check. The only time you hear stories about Bonds are from the reporters not from the players. I could be wrong, but the Jays line up would be one of the best with him in it. Pitchers would treat the line a lot differently with Bonds in the line up. They should have signed him at the winter meetings.
Keep this story going Wilner. It is a great Idea!
- ScottMike, do you think A.J burnett will opt out of his contract and do you think blue jays sign him again after he opts out? Also Alex rios getting 11 mill per year is a steal. He would be a 16 million player on the open market.
MW: In order – yes and probably not.
- andrewAlso mike give me examples of player who have won championships who were cancers in their locker rooms.
MW: Hmmmm, A.J. Pierzynski for one. Off the top of my head, he jumps out. And remember, Barry Bonds AND Jeff Kent were on the same team in 2003 and got to within six outs of a World Series title. I don’t think Scott Spiezio hit that homer and the Angels rallied to win because Bonds and Kent are both irredeemable a-holes. But there have been tons more. Thing is, when a team wins, nobody talks about who’s a jerk – they’re just “tough” and “take no prisoners” leader-types.
- andrewMike, is the Alex Rios deal frontloaded or backloaded?
MW: I don’t know. No one will give me any details.
- julianFeb 28th, I heard a rumour on the radio (I believe it was TheFan590), on the way to the airport, heading to Spring Training in Dunedin. It was rumoured that Barry Bonds name was being considered as a potential player to be brought into the Jays’ fold.
I asked Paul Godfrey in Dunedin on (I think it was Friday the 29th), if there was any truth to the rumour that the Jays may be looking at Bonds. He asked what had been said, I told him and he said no.
Get Bonds…if only to provide someone a legitimate shot to win the car in right-centre field…
Let the fans get creative…have an HGH night or something!! Get over it!!
He really could make a difference in Toronto I think.
- DJJAYMW
You and Godfrey must be drinking the same koolaid. Bonds-are you crazy? What do you want a team of senior citizens? What do you do with Bonds when Stairs is healthy?
Bond’s is a disaster. He’s never been on a world series team. Why do you think the reason for that is Mike?
This management knew they had a problem with Stairs and still they dumped Johnson; what a bunch of idiots.
If Coats doesn’t work out, call up Lind.
MW: I only said go after Bonds if Stairs’ hip is going to be a long-term issue. And I think the reason that Bonds has never won a World Series is because the rest of his team wasn’t good enough.
- gerryI still think you’re nuts, but that was before the Bonds idea.
… Actually I kinda like the Bonds idea
- NateWhat I don’t get about all the anti-Bonds people..
Is if you hate Bonds for using steroids, why don’t you just hate all of baseball? It just makes no sense….. I can name you 5 Jays that clearly took HGH just from looking at them…
The one thing the Jays are missing is that reallly scary bat.. They have a lot of very good bats… But they don’t have a bat that puts the fear of God in pitchers… Bonds is that guy… And would drastically alter the dynamic of how pitchers pitch this team…. There is no doubt in my mind that he would put this team over the edge!
- SteveI wouldn’t mind if Bonds became a Blue Jay. As much as I do not condone what he did it’s difficult to ignore the fact that Bonds could arguably make this the best team in the league. If Bonds were in the lineup there would be no question as to whether or not the jays can score enough runs. The guy can still get on base with the best of them. I also agree with you Mike, when you said that many athletes have done worse things in the past, yet they still receive fan support as if nothing happened. As well, many people are saying that this should be J.p’s last kick at the can (myself included). If that is the case he would be foolish not to consider it a little more seriously. All this, of course, is assuming that Stairs can’t play the majority of the platoon role. Even if he does Stairs will not put the numbers that Barry can.
- DilsonI think they should sign Bonds for the reasons Mike has stated. The guy can flat out hit and he is exactly the type of hitter the Jays need – a big left handed power bat with a high OBP. Also Rogers Centre being a hitters part will definately benefit his power numbers.
The clubhouse already seems to be so tight that I dont think its possible for him to bring the other players attitudes down.
Also nobody is talking about the fact that he has already broken the HR mark, the only reason he has to still play is love of the game and to get a ring. I’m sure he would be dedicated and do what needed to be done to get the WS ring that a career like his deserves.
Also consider the fact that the Rogers Centre doesn’t have a particularly large outfield, and they have Vernon in centre which will absolutely pick up some of the defensive inability that accompanies his devastating bat.
Most importantly if the Jays sign him ticket sales would DEFINATELY go up. I personally would see at least a couple more games than my usual. I have always wanted to see Bonds hit live.
Adam
- AdamHi Mike,
I can’t believe what I’m reading. The Jays hire two old farts in Thomas & Stairs. There may be a problem so we hire Bonds. Please do a survay. Most people in Toronto don’t want him I don’t care what he brings. This is the problem with the Jays (MANAGEMENT). DH is so important in the AL East with Ortiz, Matsui, Giambi. The kind of money our senior citizens are both getting collectivly and the strangle hold contract FT got it makes you wonder. When I heard The Jays signed FT as DH I was disapointed, it was alos partly so to impress Ted Lilly to sign. This team needs another slogger will all know that, Mike. This should of been taken care of. Godfrey, Richardi, Gibbons if this doesn’t work THEY MUST GO.
MW: Ummm, Matsui and Giambi are on the same team.
- brunoHi Mike, I completely agree with you that we should sign Barry Bonds. The fact that he’s a jerk has nothing to do with his raw ability. I think he’d provide the left-handed pop that we need to solidify this lineup. Can you imagine how many balls would fly over the right field wall at Rogers Centre with Bonds’ bat in the lineup? Mike, when will you be doing Wednesdays with JP again? I think everyone who agrees [like you and I] that Bonds should be a Blue Jay should call in and let it be known to JP how much we need him here. Keep up the fantastic work Mike and I’m sure you’ll have twice as much fun in New York in July.
- Bernard SinghI notice you always bring religion into your blog or while on the radio and I was wondering why?
Also, You might be one of the rudest sports radio talk hosts that I have ever heard.
MW: I wouldn’t say I always bring religion into my blog, but I guess I do it a lot. But I talk more about tradition and ritual than about belief. It’s a big part of who I am, and that’s part of what this blog is supposed to give you insight into. And I don’t think I’m all that rude, I think I just don’t deal well with the irrational. But you should listen to more sports talk radio if you think I’m one of the most rude hosts out there.
- Phil TampersSportsnet is covering the “out of the playoff leafs” tomorrow. Is the only way to watch the game going to be on the YES network with the extra innings package?
I guess I’ll have to listen to you on the radio! Sorry but I wanta watch the Jays beat the Yanks!
Golf Leafs Golf and wake up sportsnet, It baseball season!
- DaveMike I have a fantasy baseball team and tell if my lineup is impressive. I have david ortiz as my DH. I have Vernon wells in centre, Rios in right, Matsui in left, Branden Phillps in second base, Mike Lowell at third, Michael Young at SS, Jorge Posada as my catcher, and Justin Morneau at first? Can you project what kind of years these players might have?
MW: I’m not that big on fantasy, I don’t like the fact that stuff like on-base, defense, caught stealing and other stuff don’t count. All the players you have are very good, though. All but Young and Posada should hit at least 20-25 homers and drive in about 100 runs, and Young is a good bet to hit .300. Nice team.
- julianbonds would actually take all the pressure off of wells and rios and thomas. no reporter would ever talk to them! but realistally what would happen is if thomas struggles you will see a platoon of stairs/thomas at dh with stewy as the everyday left fielder. thomas has over 1.000 ops vs lefties. but wilner will disagree because sample size too small.
MW: Thomas is an awesome hitter, has been his whole career, and has always kicked the crap out of lefties. As much as it hurts to agree with you, I think you’re right. If Thomas struggles, that’s exactly what will happen. But all the reporters would keep talking to him, Wells and Rios, because if Bonds were here he’d never talk to us.
- lesHey Mike,
With regards to Bonds, when is the last time Barry swung a bat?
An aging all-star DH who might take a while to get out of the gate…don’t we already have that!?
Cheers,
Jeremy
MW: Bonds doesn’t have Frank’s track record of poor starts. And even if he takes a bit to get going, he’d still be on base all the time.
- JeremyI heard the game will be on TSN… I’m not sure if I can put up with 3+ hours of Rod Black. If there weren’t a delay on TV I would mute the sound and listen to the game on the FAN.
Mike, keep up the good work!
- EliMike, you are not rude. Thank you for trying to make fans back up their opinions with some reasonable facts.
- BrentI talked to you during the rain delay show and I agree with Phil’s comment about you being rude on the show, but I guess you can because you have your own show. haha
I was trying to tell you that Gibbons needs to go to the bullpen a little less often. You said that you only saw him pull pitchers early twice last year. I disagree, I don’t know how many times I saw him yank Halliday in the 7th inn. only to let the bullpen waste his awesome effort. Halliday, Burnett, McGowan can easily throw 100-120 pitches. Have more faith in your starters.
MW: I wasn’t rude to you on that call. The bullpen did blow a few games behind Halladay last year, for sure, but the two that stand out the most to me were games in which Halladay was pulled in the 9th, not the 7th – the games in Detroit and New York in September. But, through the magic of computers and stuff, I can tell you exactly how many times Halladay was yanked in the 7th inning only to have the bullpen blow a game for him last year: Zero.
- ColinYES. Great idea. Why not sign the most feared hitter of all time? It’s funny I am agreeing with you, because I never really have ever since the time I listened to you defend Gibby one night after a loss that he had as much of hand in as he possibly could have.
- JamieWhy don’t MLB give the job of scheduling to somebody with enough sense to have as many spring games as possible played in covered stadiums or in the warm south?
MW: It’s probably cheaper to let the computer do it.
- JimJP doesnt have the stones to sign Bonds. Stairs isnt even going to be out for an extended period of time. Barry will end up in Seattle im guessing.
MW: If Stairs isn’t out an extended period then they definitely won’t sign Bonds. I don’t think it’s about JP’s stones, though. If the Jays were going to sign Bonds it’d be a Godfrey/Rogers decision once JP advised them of his intentions.
- Brett VHey Mike,
Talked to you yesterday during the delay show – thanks again for taking the call.
Is there any chance that FAN590 will send you back to Yankee Stadium this year? If I wasn’t a poor student and temp worker, I’d buy you the ticket myself.
Good luck with the rest of the season.
MW: I’m pretty sure I’m going back for the all-star game, but I really appreciate the offer!
- DanHi Mike,
Will Jay’s Talk be podcast this year? Thank you.
MW: I don’t know, but I’m doing my best.
- RBBonds would really solve all of the Jays offensive concerns. Bonds is all abou being offensive.
I very much agree with you on the bullpen. Even without Ryan and Jansen, our bullpen is light years ahead of the Tigers, and people still pick them to win the WS.
- DaveMike,
Can you please point out bad grammar more often?
“And by the way, my crazy what?” – - Gold.
MW: Heh heh
- BeauMike, you took some serious heat yesterday….see what happens when the Yanks postpone a game because of some mist irritating A-Rod’s $275 Million Dollar nose!
- PatHopefully they will play tonight and the Jays fans will have something aside from calling you rude to talk about
I think Colin’s on the Kool-Aid. Nonetheless, it seems to me that Halliday Pitched to reputation when he went 7 innings and pitched like crap on his next turn, when he convinced Gibby to let him stay in for 150 pitches. Do you think Halliday has a bad start after alot of innings in his previous one.
Lou
MW: First of all, Halladay never threw 150 pitches in a game last year, but I know you were exaggerating. And now, look at the service I provide! If you throw out the four starts around Halladay’s appendicitis (it’s only fair), here are his numbers in games AFTER a start in which he threw at least seven innings: 11-5, 2.59 ERA, 1.090 WHIP. So, fair to say, the answer is a VERY emphatic no. Where did you get this idea about Halladay’s reputation, by the way?
- Lorenzo BelloMike, have you been talking to Jerry or Alan recently? Any report on the weather in New York? I want baseball!!
MW: Last I heard, the tarp went on the field at 4:00. I want baseball, too!
- Keith“Awaiting moderation”? Wotinell does that mean?
MW: Sadly, all comments have to be moderated before they get posted. Which kind of sucks.
- JimMichael:
How do you feel about Richard Griffin? He never edits self-appraising comments in his mailbag, as you did in yours over the winter while expressing contempt for journalists who didn’t.
Plus, he seems to have views on the Jays & their personnel that are diametrically opposed to yours. I’ve always felt a televised debate between the two of you would be entertaining.
MW: As I have said many times before, I like Rich Griffin a lot. He loves baseball and has very strong ideas about how the game should be played. I, too, have very strong ideas about how the game should be played, just different ones. I don’t know if he edits his mailbag questions or if someone else does, or if he’s under orders to leave questions in in their entirety, so don’t judge him on that.
I don’t know that a debate between the two of us would be all that productive, because I doubt we’d ever get the other to switch sides of the fence, but we have talked on the air several times.
- JCL“Burnett, McGowan can easily throw 100-120 pitches. Have more faith in your starters.”
If anything, i hope that Gibbons pulls Burnett out earlier this year. There were a few times were he was throwing 120 pitches a game, and then went on the DL.
If one can get 100 pitches at most out of Burnett you should be exstatic, but, if you push him, he just seems to break down, and then what use is he ?
I would be perfectly happy with 30 games of Burnett this year where he is pulled after the 6th inning. Thats a 180 quality innings, something we have never got from Burnett. And it’s not like we have a bad bullpen.
- DaveI think they should sign Bonds. He would without a doubt help the offense, but more importantly, it would put people in the stands and that would help the whole team play better.
- JohnHey Mike. Big fan of you and the postgame show. Just wondering who closes for the Jays till B.J gets back, and do you think you could get some Jays to take some postgame calls once in a while after a home game?
MW: Jeremy Accardo, the guy who got 30 saves last year, closes until Ryan gets back. And as far as Jays on the post-game, I have tried and failed in the past, but with our new engineer Tom Young pulling some strings, we might be able to make it happen this year. Just don’t hold your breath.
- mosesMike, how realistic is it that Bonds would end up here? In terms of money, his willingness to come here and if the Jays would even consider paying him or going against Rogers smarmy corporate values and bring an unpopular player here? Gillick wouldn’t have hesitated. Ricky Henderson played here!
MW: Rickey Henderson wasn’t all that unpopular, certainly not even in the same airspace as Bonds in that regard. In the overall, I think it’s highly, highly, highly unlikely that Bonds is ever a Blue Jay. Unfortunately.
- michaelDon’t like the Bonds idea at all. Too many wildcards for too big of an investment. But after cutting Reed and signing the Captain, J.P. just might push for it for competitive reasons. I see Bonds in a Yanks uniform in July once one either Matsui or Giambi gets hurt.
Why don’t you think A.J. will stay with us? Does he feel he’s in Roy’s shadow and wants to be a #1 somewhere or will it simply be “seeking fair market value” issue (aka. greed)?
Finally, how’s Benitez coming along? I think he’s a good depth pick-up (but not as good as Colon to the Sox!).
MW: A.J. leaves because of money, no other reason. I know that Benitez threw and threw well on the weekend, but nothing further. I wasn’t able to go down to the clubhouse to talk to people after the rainout because I was on the air, and J.P. doesn’t give out his cell number.
- ToddMike,
Did you at least get a knish at the stadium?
MW: I hit up no less than THREE street-meat vendors, but they were all out of knishes.
- DJJAYone thing that really bothered me last year was the poor baserunning and now in the 1st inning rios gets doubled off on a popup right in front of him! if shannon stewart could see it was a popup how in the world can rios not see it?? they have to improve in this area
- lesI have a question about A.J burnett. Do you think A.J burnett makes barry zito money if he opts out of his contract?
MW: If he has a healthy season, absolutely.
- julianMike who do you think is the best pitcher in the Amercian League now that Johan Santana is in the NL?
MW: Harry Leroy Halladay III
- andrewMike would it be crazy to say if Dustin McGowan has a ERA of 3.50 and 15 wins?
MW: If Dustin McGowan has an ERA of 3.50 and 15 wins, then what?
- garyMike as a yankees fan, who do you think of our young pitchers will turn out the best? Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, or Ian Kennedy?
MW: I’m not a Yankee fan.
- mattI am a bit concerned with eck leading off notwithstanding this game. although his last 2 years were somewhat good, they were in the AAANL. last time he was in the AL he obp was pretty horrible. but I am not sure who would be a good replacement. that’s the problem with this lineup everybody is the same hitter
MW: Yeah, everybody hits like Eckstein. Thing is, you’re right, there’s no real leadoff hitter on this team. For now, with Stairs out, I’d prefer Stewart 1, Hill 2 and Eckstein 9.
- lesDo you know if the rios deal includes a no trade clause and/or a opt out clause?
MW: Yes, I do. No, it doesn’t.
- Jerrythis seems like a bad omen. we are seeing the exact same play as last year. 1/11 with risp poor baserunning, sloppy defense. that was a sure dp for hill but he booted it.
MW: Blaming that one on Hill is tough. It was a ball that he had to take while coming in on his backhand. It’s a terrific play if he makes it. The brain fart was Eckstein’s on the play before. And the Yankees don’t have a single hit with a runner in scoring position tonight.
- leswhy is it so hard for the jays to grind out ABs. Some of their hitters are so impatient. They brought in a former Yankees hitting coach and I dont see much difference in their offensive philosophy tonight. Is it because almost all the Yankees hitters are just better and more talented? I think so. Also, Im concerned about Halladays strikeout rate. It has dropped every year and he has less margin for error. I dont see how he could win the cy young unless that improves.
MW: It’s true, people do look at strikeouts in awarding the Cy Young, but Halladay’s drop in Ks is intentional. He gets quicker resolutions to at-bats, and can therefore pitch deeper, by getting guys to pound the ball into the ground on the first pitch or two.
- aviNothing to do with this BLOG.. but couldnt find anywhere else to vent.. 7th Inning… 2-2 tie.. opening night.. Hill Doubles.. No OUTS.. and they DONT SACRIFICE HIM OVER??? i’m blown away.. and ofcourse… they don’t get him in now..
unreal
MW: Scutaro hit the ball right on the screws, but right at Giambi. Why do people always assume that a bunt will be successful?
- Chrisregarding hill, that is a play that a good sb makes and he should make that play, it’s right in front of him and he gloved it. if you recall, hill made many spectacular plays last year but I also recall him booting plays when the pressure was on and the game on the line. this is boot #1 this season, keep count. the jays dont have the offensive weapons, they have to win with execution and great defense which they didn’t get tonight like the yanks did with melky. regarding the lineup, with stairs getting most ab’s there is no good leadoff hitter because every other hitter is the same, low obp with power. the jays should seriously trade hill for brian roberts. roberts is exactly the leadoff hitter they need. hill if so overrated. he is 7th in the al in ops, 9th in obp, which means he is average
MW: Hill has also had exactly two full seasons in the major leagues. He’s still developing into the player he’s going to be. I agree with you, they need a real leadoff man, but trading Hill for Roberts isn’t the answer.
- lesNot a bad start. A couple of web gems from Melky or the momentum would’ve been with the Jays.
Too many left on base (as per last year)…gotta get them around to score.
Scutaro did a good job tonight…probably should’ve had the line drive early, but whatever.
Roy pitched good enough to win, we just have to score.
Damn, I wish it had rained before Melky hit it out…ha!
Get them tomorrow….Jays bats will be hot….they’re ready to go, nerves gone, ready to get down to business.
- DJJAYMike,
I find and most people do find your style of baseball.
BORINGGGGGGGGGGGG
MW: There’s one other thing about my style of baseball – WINNINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG. Active baseball and by the old book managing isn’t winning baseball, long-term.
- brunoWell the top of the 8th inning (against Joba) was a prime example of why the jays need Frank to get off to a good start. Vernon was another guy that stood out as well. This game could’ve been won had those 2 hit in the clutch.
- DilsonJust listening to Jays talk after loss to Yankees. So glad you brought up that HORRIBLE eighth inning strike out call on Vernon Wells. I have NEVER seen such a incredibly bad homer call. That pitch was six inches above the strike zone the ump had the whole game. Just putrid! Can’t believe Gibson didn’t come out. Just glad you brought it up, Mike. Television announcers merely mentioned that they thought it was high but COME ON.
- TonyMike,
“I’M NOT GIVING UP AN OUT”
Your style of baseball is sooo
boringgggg. Get it through your thick head Jays can’t hit. YOUR WRONG PERIOD
MW: Saying the same thing more than once doesn’t make you any more right. When was my wrong period? The 80s?
- brunoMike, that caller Mike who said there was a Bottom of the 9th in tonights game, and “Jim” Toth said Gibbons is gone if they Jays start out bad may be the reason why alot of these writers say your “rude”
I would have quit my job after the first week if I would have to answer these callers after ever game.
- Brandon in TorontoMike,
Congrats on making it to Yankee Stadium. I am heading there this summer for the first time.
Anyway I want to comment/question on you radio show.
Why is it the you feel the need to argue with every caller. You always interupt every caller, and always bash every comment the callers(your audience)make.
It it extremely annoying. I would listen more often if you weren’t so rude. If you know so much about the game, why are you not managing a team or working in the front office.
Comments like “so what” to your callers is unprofessional.
I hope things get better
Kindest regards,
MW: I appreciate the kindest regards. I don’t think I’m rude. I mean, if you think that when someone says something that’s factually incorrect to a national audience, correcting them is rude, then yeah, I’m rude. I do disagree with a lot of callers, it’s true. It’s not intentional, but a lot of callers see things differently from me, for example, that bunting a lot and trying to steal bases all the time is a really good idea.
Look, if someone comes on the radio and states something that they believe to be a fact and it’s untrue, I’m not going to let them continue, but I’ll always let them back in once they have their facts straight. We can always agree to disagree, and I have done that with a lot of callers. Most of them don’t want to, though.
- TimMike,
Do you want a bet that FT is done. You can tell Ted Rgoers pays you. By the end of April we’ll know if their Pretenders or Contenders. JAYS CAN’T WAIT FOR FRANK THOMAS. TELL THE TRUTH MIKE.
- brunoHey Lou lay off will ya?
- ColinI stand corrected, Scott Downs did an amazing job tonight not letting any runs in with a runner on third and no outs.
Great pitching tonight by Halliday too but it’s not fair when the Yanks only have to play 7 innings of baseball and then lights out.
haha
I meant Roy pitches like a Cy Young candidate in a start following a 7 inning outing. It seems to me that he gets hit alot in a start after he is allowed to pitch a complete game.
Maybe I’m on the Kool-Aid,
Lou
