Can you spot the difference?

March 11th, 2010

Let’s play a little word association. What do Brenda Halloran, Doug Craig and Ken Seiling have in common? Each has declared their candidacy for this fall’s municipal election. Isn’t something or, more accurately, someone missing? In Halloran, Craig and Seiling we have three of our four largest local governments accounted for. But what’s happening in Kitchener? To date, only Frank Kulcsar has filed nomination papers. And he’s optimistic, too. His e-mail address is “mayorfrank.” Should Carl Zehr be worried? Who knows? Mum’s still the word on the future plans of Kitchener’s longest-serving mayor. But one would have to think the pressure to reveal those plans is increasing now that the other three are out of the gate.

For the record, we have a little wager running here in the newsroom. I don’t want to brag but I was the only one who believed that the rumours of Ken Seiling’s pending retirement were just that — rumours. Actually, it didn’t take much. A source close to the decision revealed the plans to me some time ago and even though I shared that knowledge with my co-workers before we started our pool, they wanted to go ahead with the bet. So that’s one coffee for me. Will there be a second?

Hey, Mayor Zehr…I’ll split it with you if you make my prediction come true. When are you filing your nomination papers?
