Matt and Eric’s Big Give!

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

This morning was tear filled and a beautiful moment for a local gal, as we kicked off ‘Matt and Eric’s Big Give’. Give it a listen and have tissue handy. More people will be made happier and wealthier with this initiative over the coming weeks…..or when Eric and I run out of cash.

Big story this morning during the show centered around the field fire in Springbank over the weekend. A fire started by a guy with a propane device used to kill gophers. Especially we assumed such ‘fury fire starter’ would be something ‘bored guy’ builders in his garage on a Saturday afternoons. Nope. Turns out you actually buy these things (check out the vid on the site). And freeloaders, don’t be surprised to find this in a raffle soon!

No Maui…No Monkey

Friday, March 14th, 2008

Alas, A wonderful week comes to an end, as Eric returns on Monday.
If you listen to the show you’re well aware of Tara and Jose. They recently won a trip to Hawaii on Jack and charmed us and made us laugh with their conversation between each other including Jose’s reason for choosing that trip instead of other ‘Freeloader Showcases’. That being “No Maui…no monkey”, obviously Tara’s warning to him.
We’ve had so many emails and calls asking us to have them on the show more often and we’ll be doing just that. But first, in order to know them better we asked Tara to tell us how they met.

Believe it or not we met on a cruise ship. Yup, the Love Boat (insert laughter here). I was the Julie McCoy onboard so to speak and Jose the deck hand. Now boy meets girl and girl meets boy and girls thinking that this boy is CUTE (and an added bonus that he really doesn’t speak-a-the-engli). Tara’s pickup line to Jose was… “teach me Spanish big boy”(insert a grrrrrrr with the roll of the tongue while stoking boys big bicep). I think Jose got to the number 3 before we were making out like bandits under the stars of the Caribbean sky. Now I joined cruise ships to travel, see the world and meet people however Jose was a certified “seaman” and even went to “seaman” school (tee hee hee… I said “seaman”)
So we proceed to date onboard for several months (with several dictionaries) until it came time that our contract was finished. Jose had asked me if I wanted to come and visit him in Panama during my vacation and I thought…. great, I have a chance to see a part of the world I might never get to see. So off we go to Panama. A little village on the side of a volcano in the middle of no-where ville Panama. His Mom would wash the clothes on a stone and hang them to dry. When it was time to eat Mom would go out the chicken coupe, kill a chicken and bring it into the house and start cooking. They had running water for a few hours in the day and then it would be redirected to another village. Needless to say it was an amazing eye opening experience for a city girl.
I had asked Jose what I could buy his Mother as a thank you gift for the wonderful hospitality and he said that she would love some baby chicks. They will produce eggs and eventually be dinner. So we were preparing the chicken coupe for the chicks when my life changed!! There in the middle of no-where ville Panama on a side of a volcano in a chicken coupe was a Calgary Stampeders Football Hat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Can you believe it????) Now I can understand Jose owning a Miami Dolphins or any other NFL hat but this was the CFL and the Calgary Stampeders to boot!!!! I told him that that was MY CITY and MY TEAM. To this day he doesn’t remember when or where he got that hat (insert sappy romantic music here). I know, I was thinking what everyone else is thinking…. Fate? Destiny? or just coincidence?
When I left Panama I was not sure if we would ever see each other again. I had my next ship assignment and Jose still had 2 months vacation before his return and had not yet been assigned a ship. We were apart for several months and would occasional chat on the phone if in a U.S port. Jose had asked if he could request the ship that I was on and sure enough it was approved. Two weeks prior to his arrival I had received transfer papers to another vessel. I called one day to tell him of this terrible news when he too told me of his transfer papers. Out of the 16 ships in the fleet it turns out that both of our transfers were to the same ship (insert eerie poltergeist music here). Once again… fate, destiny or coincidence?
When we finally left ships (6 years later) we decided to make Calgary our home due to the strong economy at the time. Ships was all Jose had ever known so we were not sure what he was going to do when we came here but there was always the option of being Captain of the S.S. Moyie at Heritage Park (but that was only seasonal work)
We have been together ever since (together for 10 years and married for 8). We have had the ups and downs and trials and tribulations as every marriage does. But it is our story that keeps up together and keeps us laughing (and keeps me translating)
We have many stories, lots of funny quotes and TONS of miscommunications (shocking) to share so let us know what you are looking for.

Just me this week

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

I’m sure you’ve figured out that Eric’s on vacation this week, so feel free to pick up his slack by calling 263-JACK during the show and contribute whatever you wish.

With your help, our producer Donnie has realized his goal. We suspect it’s spawned by a mid-age crisis, but regardless he has started a band. Jack listeners named the band…. ‘Tickle Trunk’. Jack listeners auditioned for spots in the band and the line-up is complete. Jack listeners will never however be subjected to us playing anything they may record.

Thanks to those you who called this morning with input on what you would have done if you were the wife of New York’s Governor. The GENTLEMAN was forced to hold a press conference yesterday to say sorry. Seems he’s not very frugal as he was busted for sleeping with a 4 thousand dollar hooker. Like me, most of you this morning can’t understand why the wives of these people can always be found beside these guys, holding hands, and facing cameras as if everything is ok. One caller suggested she too would gladly stand with him for support. Providing the press didn’t mind the delay of his testicular removal surgery prior! However, an obviously politically astute gentleman pointed it that she probably didn’t mind standing there facing her husbands accusers knowing this may help her run for President down the road.

In response to your emails wondering how Liam made out at his first Flame Game….wonderful! Well, to be honest probably more wonderful for me as the experience brought back memories of my Dad taking me to Leaf games when I was a kid. Liam lasted about a period and half, or half a bag of popcorn and a malt. And yes, we did go as ‘Jersey Family’. See pic below.

Tomorrow morning I need your help on the pitfalls of garage sales. I’ll explain at 7:10

Matt

Your turn
