To ‘flu shot’ or not to ‘flu shot’ ..
Monday, November 28th, 2011
A lot of people think getting a flu shot after November is a waste of time and won’t do much good since cold & flu season is already in full swing. Not true! In fact, it’d still do you some good to get a shot as late as January or February. Since influenza peaks in February or later – and it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to become effective.

Unfortunately, Hiking Nude in the Alps Is Going To Be A Problem!
Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011
Hikers crossing the Alps in the nude — and yes, apparently many do– may get more than just a chill after Switzerland’s top court ruled they may be fined. By doing so the court rejected the appeal of a man slapped with a 100 Swiss franc ($109) fine. The man had walked naked past a family with small children at a picnic area and a Christian rehabilitation center for drug addicts one afternoon. The ruling delighted the country’s conservative party who has been fighting to have the practice banned. In a statement, the court said: “The fundamental right to personal freedom is only marginally, if at all, infringed upon by a ban on hiking naked in a public area.” (Reuters)

Ah .. to snooze ..
Friday, November 18th, 2011
Many biological processes take place while we sleep. An expert told HealthDay News, “Sleep provides the body with its daily need for physiological restitution and recovery. While seven hours a night appears to be optimal for the majority of human beings, many people can function perfectly well on regular sleep of less or more hours.” .. speak for yourself. ; )

Honey, pass the safe ..
Thursday, November 17th, 2011
The wedding vows are clear. You are to love one another “for richer or for poorer,” but be warned! Focusing too much on the “for richer” part could doom your marriage to fail. When one or both partners in a marriage are materialistic with a high priority of either accumulating a lot of money or buying a lot of material things — from a too-expensive house to the latest appliances and fashionable clothing — they are far less likely to have a satisfying and stable marriage, according to researchers from Brigham Young University. The study surveyed 1,700 married couples.
Yeah, yeah. Whatever .. here’s my Christmas list. ; )

Well now that explains a lot …

The key to dropping stubborn pounds may be right on the tip of your tongue. Recent research shows that our taste buds can distinguish not only how salty, sweet, savory, bitter, or sour food is but also how fatty it is and that ability may influence how much we weigh. A study in the British Journal of Nutrition found that people whose tongues were more sensitive to fat had lower BMIs and consumed less fat in their diets, your sensitivity may decrease over time, “so people who eat a lot of fat need more of it to feel satisfied,” say lead study author Russell Keast, Ph.D. Future research could possibly lead to the development of foods that satiate our taste for fat while packing less of it. Let’s hope for the best! : )

MIDDLE CLASS FAMILIES EAT MORE FAST FOOD THAN POOR ONES:
Wednesday, November 9th, 2011
Middle class families eat more fast food than less-healthy poor ones, according to a new study from the University of California, Davis. The findings suggest restaurant chains like McDonald’s and Burger King might not be the biggest culprits in America’s fight against expanding waistlines because the poorest, and least healthy, families can’t afford to eat out as often. Researcher J. Paul Leigh studied a survey of the eating habits of 5,000 Americans in the mid-1990s and found that fast food consumption increased with income level. But when incomes reach about $60,000 a year, fast food consumption declined, as families chose sit-down restaurants over the drive-through lane.

GROW A MUSTACHE FOR ‘MOVEMBER’:
Tuesday, November 8th, 2011
This month is actually Movember, the month of the moustache, when men grow “their finest handlebar, twirly or Chaplin-esque ‘tache to raise awareness of prostate cancer.” The movement was started by a group of Australian men in 1999, and it has become so popular it’s crossed the globe — and the sexes. The Daily Mail reported that some women are actually buying fake moustaches to get in on the trend. I’m just letting mine go.

Scrimping on sleep has a powerfully detrimental effect on immunity.
Monday, November 7th, 2011
The perfect example: college students who get sick after pulling all-nighters cramming for exams. Poor sleep is associated with lower immune system function and reduced numbers of killer cells that fight germs. In fact, University of Chicago researchers found that men who had slept only 4 hours a night for 1 week produced half the amount of flu-fighting antibodies in their blood (jump-started by a flu shot) compared with those who slept 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 hours. What to do: Most adults need between 7 and 9 hours of uninterrupted rest every night, but how you feel in the morning and throughout the day may be a better gauge. If you’re tired when you wake up in the morning, you’re not getting enough — sleep, or maybe not enough quality sleep.
ZZZZZZZZZ .. huh, oh sorry .. fell asleep.

No evening or midnight snacks
Tuesday, November 1st, 2011
If you want to keep your teeth sparkling white and cavity-free, don’t indulge in an after-dinner or midnight snack. Eating food at night can seriously damage your teeth, according to a study from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. Here’s the kicker: It doesn’t matter what you eat. A piece of fruit will do as much damage as a bowl of ice cream. This held true even after accounting for other factors, such as age, smoking and sugar/carbohydrate consumption. Why? Blame it on changes in saliva flow. At night, our saliva tends to dry up, and there is not enough of it to properly remove food debris from the mouth.
