When it comes to State Fairs, you just can’t find anything these days that can’t be fried! Two finalists for the Sixth Annual Big Tex Choice Awards are particularly amusing as 2010 State Fair of Texas vendors vie for Best Taste & Most Creative. And those two require IDs proving the purchaser is 21. The first is Fried Beer — yes, Fried Beer! That’s a beer-filled pretzel pocket which is deep-fried to a golden brown. One bite and the escaping beer serves as a dipping sauce. Then there’s Deep Fried Frozen Margarita! That’s a sweet and creamy funnel cake batter deliciously mixed with margarita ingredients. It’s then fried, dusted with a tangy lemon/lime mixture and lightly spritzed with south of the border flavor and served in a salt rimmed glass. The final round is on Labor Day when a panel of three judges will pick the winners. Still our favorite might be the Deep Fried S’mores Pop Tart! That’s the Pop Tart with a sensational chocolate, peanut butter, s’mores flavor which is lightly battered and deep fried. Hot out of the fryer, the sinfully diet-busting treat is drizzled with chocolate syrup and topped with whipped cream.
