Old fashioned proms
Friday, April 30th, 2010
Remember the prom? Back in the day, a boy would pass a note to your girlfriend, who past it on to you, asking you to be his date for the big night. We all know how different our kids’ social lives are than ours were. Today what they’re doing is going on YouTube to ask people to the prom .. and in some cases, they technically don’t know the other person! A young man in California took 6 hours to produce a video, including animation of an underwater scene because the girl he likes loves sea horses! Animation?!?! Wow! By the way, he also posted his video on her Facebook page. What do you think she said? Well yeah, she said yes of course.
Another young man really likes one of the super models and asked her to his prom on YouTube and she said yes! .. as long as he could find a date for her friend!
And then there was the young man who sang to a girl on the popular web site and swept her off her feet!
I suppose this is an indication that chivalry is not dead and neither is creativity. I imagine it would be pretty difficult to say no to such an elaborate request but then again, I still kind of like the boy kicking the rocks, with his head down and sweaty palms asking the girl one on one. Times, they are a changin’

Taxes
Thursday, April 29th, 2010
The city fathers approved the budget for 2010 last night and that means a tax increase for us of 3.39 %. Now, I know that no increase is ideal, but relatively speaking, the Sault’s increase is still less than other northern municipalities. Mayor Rowswell said the budget took a while to finalize because Council and city staffers wanted to keep the taxes down as much as possible, without losing attention to services.
Feeling better yet?

Soo Grandmas
Monday, April 26th, 2010
Kudos to Jan Zerwinski and the other Soo Grandmas. This group of women has taken it upon itself to acknowledge counterparts in Africa, of all places. Monies will go to fellow grandmas in Africa who have been left with their grandchildren to raise after their own children succumbed to HIV or Aids. As you may be aware, the disease is rampant in Africa and is crushing families at an alarming rate. Oh, and the children may be ill with the disease themselves .. and that’s when Grandma has to take over!
The Soo Grandmas are hosting a lunch at the Water Tower Inn this Sunday at 12:30 and there are still a few seats left. Tickets are $25.00 and have to be purchased by Wednesday. Handmade jewelry will be on sale as well, with all proceeds going to Africa. So, have a great lunch and help out! Call Merle at 942-1761 or Doris at 942-9466.
See ya in the morning,

Just sweep the floor

According to research done at the University of Western Ontario, roughly 25% of couples split household chores at least 60 – 40. Guess who does the 40? Those couples report greater overall happiness and satisfaction than couples with a less balanced arrangement. Apparently, the women enjoy carrying less of the burden of child care and housework, and the men feel happier being less dependent on their wives. So if he does almost half the housework, both are happier. I think it all comes down to being considerate .. on both parts. After all, who does 40% of the shovelling, mowing of the lawn or taking out of the garbage? Ah, but then there’s the grocery shopping, present buying and appointment making. This could go on and on couldn’t it? Can’t we all just get along?
See ya Monday morning.
Coupons
Thursday, April 22nd, 2010
I clip coupons. I know, there have been times in my life where I wouldn’t bother, but I now think of it as practical and financially wise .. or maybe I’ve just gotten cheap over the years. Regardless, online coupons are the rage these days. Their redemption increased 263% to about 50 million in 2009, but .. yes, there’s always a but .. is there a negative to this practice? Well of course there is! The new breed of coupon, printed from the internet or sent to your mobile phone, could contain bar codes loaded with identifying information about you .. for instance, your email address or Facebook info! Now, all that info follows you into the store where it can be analyzed after you’ve redeemed it! What privacy?! We don’t have it anymore. So, redeem away, but be careful.

Kate

Kate minus 8 will dance no more! Kate Gosselin was voted off Dancing With the Stars last night and a lot of people were asking: “What took so long?” Now, I never watched her and her estranged husband’s reality t.v. show, so that’s not what I’m basing my opinion on. I’m going solely on her participation on Dancing With the Stars. When was the last time you saw a “pro” dancer actually walk out on their “star?” Tony was so frustrated with her, that he did just that! Wow, she’s miserable! She never looked like she was having any fun at all, whined about the paparazzi in her life, her pending custody battle and acted like a martyr during any of the rehearsal footage that we saw her in. So what was up with the tears last night?! For all the complaining and steely stares into the camera, why was she so upset that she was voted off the dancing island? The judges never really endorsed any of her performances .. so why the big surprise? Although, I was surprised .. that it took so long for her to be disqualified!

Scoop!
Monday, April 19th, 2010
There is not a greater word for a news person. I’m proud to say that we got the scoop early this morning. We were the first to announce that Elton John is playing a concert for the very first time in Sault Ste. Marie! I know .. Elton John! Sir Elton will be here on Monday July 12, 2010 at 8PM at the Essar Center. Elton (like I know him personnally or something) and his band will perform their “Rocket Man – the Greatest Hits Live” concert, featuring number one chart hits and classic album tracks from throughout Elton’s incredible five decade career. Tickets go on sale this Friday, April 23 at 10 am at the Essar Center, charge-by-phone (866-755-9422) or online at livenation.com and essarcentre.ca.
I wonder if he’ll dig out any of his old costumes? He was on Oprah last week and she asked him that. He said: “If I could fit into them, I might consider that!” Regardless of what he’s wearing, he will be amazing. Don’t forget to go to ezrocksoo.com for three different ways to win tickets!

Weekend
Friday, April 16th, 2010
Heading into a pretty busy weekend. Driving to Sudbury, with a stop at Mom’s in Espanola. We’re moving our daughter back home for the summer. We’ll definitely be back in town Sunday, in time for the awards shows. Yup, two of them..the Junos and the ACM Awards.
Enjoy your weekend and I’ll talk to you Monday morning!

Weather
Thursday, April 15th, 2010
A little rain must fall .. and it’s certainly doing that today .. right now as a matter of fact. Now I know that rain is not always the most popular forecast to have but I have further bad news. Our temperatures are supposed to drop, to the point actually that we may see some “snow” in Saturday’s forecast. Yup, I said the “s” word.
Silver lining 1: I don’t think it’s going to get cold enough for it to snow
Silver lining 2: Snow, sleet or hail, tomorrow is Friday
Silver lining 3: If it does snow on Saturday, it’s a day off for some of us and a perfect excuse to hunker down and have a movie marathon
Silver lining 4: April showers, bring May flowers .. well, ok, I don’t know what April snow brings .. but let’s wait and see.
I’ll see ya in the morning,
Lou-Anne
Conan likes Canucks!
Wednesday, April 14th, 2010
In case you haven’t heard yet, Conan O’Brien is starting a new show on a cable channel in November, but in the meantime, is doing his “Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour” and has nice things to say about his Canadian fans. He says in 1993 when he first got started in television with “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” just about everybody in the states hated his show and it looked like it was poised for the scrap heap. O’Brien says Canadians were the first to embrace his show. As a matter of fact, he likes us so much, he started his tour in Vancouver yesterday and has another show there tonight, then heads to Alberta on Saturday and Toronto on May 22nd.
It’s good he likes us hosers aye?
See ya in the morning,
Lou-Anne
