Best job to have…

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

An Irish travel agency is offering what’s described as “The Ultimate Job” .. getting paid to test out the most romantic wedding and honeymoon destinations around-the-world for 6 months. More than a 1,000 couples have already applied for the chance to be sent to resorts in Africa, Europe, Asia and the U.S. D’ya think? And, for putting up with this grueling schedule they’ll be paid about $27,000! And I thought I had the best job going.
Have a great rest of your day and

I’ll see ya in the morning,

The Sault Roller Derby, the Sault’s all female non-profit flat track roller derby league will be hosting an information table at Sault College’s Health & Wellness Fair on Thursday April 1, 2010 from 9 am to 1:30 pm.
I had the distinct pleasure of doing a story with the girls while I was freelancing for Shaw. These girls are great fun and are really dedicated. Oh, and don’t worry, if you haven’t roller skated since high school, they’ll help you out! They took us through all their drills..I couldn’t do any of those, they skated in formation..I couldn’t do that, they went around the track really, really fast..couldn’t do that either. I fell and banged my head..now that I could do. The ladies are very serious about safety gear and making sure it’s on properly. When I banged my head, I was happy they are.
Oh, by the way, they all have nicknames like they used to have on the TV show, remember Skinny Minny Miller? You can call me Luscious Lou .. or maybe not.
Keep up the good work girls!

Aaaaaaayyyy!

His hair is now the distinguished grey of an older man and there’s no sign of the signature duck tail hair style he sported on the television sitcom “Happy Days.”
But the actor best known for making “The Fonz” a cultural institution during the show’s decade-long run between 1974 and 1984 can still draw a crowd of awed fans.
Henry Winkler, now a dapper-looking 64, received the key to the City of Winnipeg during an appearance at a Winnipeg auto show on Sunday where he was signing autographs.
He still hasn’t received the keys to either Los Angeles or his home town of New York City.

I found this on CTV this morning. Way to go Winnipeg!

Let’s get at it….

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Women need to get at least 1 hour a day of moderate exercise if they hope to ward off the creep of extra pounds that come with aging. That’s according to researchers at the Harvard Medical School. Ok, so I was all proud of myself because I was getting in 30 minutes, 6 days a week. Now, I have to do an hour?! Who are these researchers anyway? Well, this one is called I-Min Lee and she says to prevent weight gain as people grow older an hour is required but, the good news is less time is needed to get the same benefits if you exercise vigourously, by running or cycling hard for instance. So it’s either slow and longer or fast and shorter. Do you think Ms. Lee would frown on an hour long bike ride and sipping red wine at the same time? I just thought of something else. I bet I-Min Lee weighs 80 pounds soaken wet!

When you’re not excercising like mad, enjoy your weekend.

Lipstick and more

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Have you ever heard of the Lipstick Effect? I hadn’t either until I read about it recently. Apparently, the theory is that when economic times are tough, consumers buy less costly luxury goods. Makes sense right? So, instead of buying fur coats, women (the rich ones)buy expensive lipstick. So, pucker up with that expensive lipstick girls while you’re eating your Kraft Dinner. ; )
Me and my big mouth! Very early this morning during our show, I said to Scott that when I woke up to hear the wind howling out there, I was instantly happy that it wasn’t January because that would have meant a blizzard. Well, it’s 10:11 am now, and there’s snow on the ground. It was really early and only a short bit, honest!

Smile

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

The American Dental Association conducted a survey and found that the most attractive feature on a person is their smile. Well, really, what else is the Dental Association going to say? According to them though, a smile beat out eyes, hair and the full body as the most attractive physical feature. Thinking about it, I guess your smile is one of those things that can stay pretty much the same… it doesn’t gain weight like your body does, doesn’t require plucking grey out of it like your hair does and doesn’t swell up when you’re bloated! I notice smiles, or the lack of them, all the time. Watching someone smile or laugh instantly makes me want to know what is making them so happy! And in hindsight, some of the best smiles I’ve seen don’t include any teeth at all. Think of your favourite baby picture or a story told by your great-grandmother. Not a tooth to be found but you can still walk away showing your own pearly whites as they pass on their smile. So, go ahead, smile just ’cause ya can!

Weight

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

We’ve all heard a bazillion jokes about people who are overweight or underweight. I wonder if that’s because of our own hang ups about it?
Have you heard about the lady in the States who wants to weigh 1,000 pounds? She’s disapointed in herself because she only weighs a little more than 600 pounds. She has two children and says her husband loves her figure .. he’s a belly man. OK, so we all understand how the media has affected our children, mostly our daughters and their self image. The numbers around eating disorders are outrageous and the kids are getting younger and younger. I wonder if this woman is rebelling somehow. Is she “going to show us” a thing or two? And speaking of kids; what message is she sending to her children? This woman has mobility issues and health problems, as I’m sure you can imagine. I am the first to stand against the “too skinny” runway model look or advertising that targets our kids. Shouldn’t the message be about getting and staying healthy?

Don’t forget to pick up your daffodils in support of the Cancer Society. Scott and I are looking forward to hosting the Relay For Life fundraiser this year and we’re hoping to see you there!

Everybody dance now….

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Tonight is the season opener for Dancing With the Stars! Generally, I’m a fan but I do enjoy the show a little more after some of the eliminations have happened. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t enjoy watching people get cut…although, there was that one time when the guy who owns a computer company…remember him?..anyway..I was so embarrassed for him that it was actually uncomfortable to watch. The quality of dance obviously gets better 1/3 of the way into the show’s run. I love dancing and enjoy watching all kinds of different styles..as a matter of fact, I was going to grow up to be a dancer on the Carol Burnett Show when I was a kid! That was indeed a long time ago but if I could, I’d still do that. A couple of roadblocks now though. Carol is no longer on television and let’s just say my dancing legs shouldn’t be.

Happy Friday and have a great weekend. We took the snow out of the forecast, just for you, really..it was just for you, but it’s still going to be a little on the chilly side.
Enjoy your first day of spring tomorrow, and no, that doesn’t mean you have to get started on your spring cleaning this weekend! ; )

See ya Monday morning,

Comin’ up

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

It looks like we’re going to get another taste of winter. The weather experts are calling for snow flurries Saturday. The chance is “slight” though, so I’m not panicking. I actually don’t mind blizzards this time of year, because you can hunker down, watch the show and enjoy nature’s curtain call for the season. Or at least we can hope it’s the last one…..temperatures are pretty warm for at least the next 3 days, so if it does snow, get out there and build a snowman and toss an Easter bonnet on his head!
See ya in the morning,
Lou-Anne
