BEHEMOTH….should I?!!

August 18th, 2008 by linda.martelli

Our family trek to Wonderland is happening this week and I just viewed the Behemoth coaster and not quite sure if I’ll be doing this one or not.

Have you been on it?  How was it?  Is it easy to handle?

“IT” has arrived!!

August 13th, 2008 by linda.martelli

The Sears Christmas Wish Book 2008 was on my doorstep when I got home today!!  This is the cadillac of all catalogues, loaded with cool items ranging from under 10 dollars to under 100 dollars.  The kids love it, I love it and even he loves it.  Imagine the man of the house flipping through a catalogue?!!  It’s the perfect reference guide, it’s amazing what you can find plus it makes for easy Christmas shopping.  Guess you know what I’m doing this afternoon……

By the way, history says the Sears Wishbook began in the early 1970’s but I found this cover from the year I was born!!

Here’s Johnny!

August 7th, 2008 by linda.martelli

Wow! What a great crowd at the Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games. Despite the isolated showers, everyone hung in there for such a great night of entertainment. Be sure to head out to the festival this weekend as the grounds are covered with booths and food and entertainment and food and vendors and food….guess you get the hint.
Johnny Reid is such a gentleman. I haven’t had a chance to catch up with him for a few years and tonight was a reminder of just how sweet and talented he really is.  He was so humble when I congratulated him on his multiple CCMA Nominations, he simply said “yes it is an honour, but it’s all about them (and he pointed to the fans)!”  When it was time for a pic, he was all about doing a fun photo (I like to call it the “Facebook photo”) and the posed one, he actually made me laugh so I was caught off guard, so I am looking a bit ditzy but it was one of those natural moments.  He is the real deal.
Thanks Johnny for being YOU!    img_8522.JPG    img_8523.JPG

Were you at his show in Fergus?  What did you think?  Feel free to leave a comment!

Whaddya think? Is this a clear sign of song swiping?

July 31st, 2008 by linda.martelli

Every now and then one of these situations comes up where an artist will release a song that “sounds like” someone else’s.  Such is the case for Gretchen Wilson’s new song Work Hard, Play Harder (which I love by the way).  There are similarities between this song and Jealous Again by The Black Crowes.  As a result, The Black Crowes have filed a copyright-infringement suit against Gretchen.  Listen for yourself and let me know what you think…..

Signs of Fall?!

July 30th, 2008 by linda.martelli

Okay so tomorrow is the last day of July and the way I see it, we still have a good month of summer left and if we’re really lucky it will stretch into September and early October.  Why is it that every department store I’ve walked into in the last week have school supplies on display AND Fall clothes filling up the aisles?!!  It’s scary!  I’m just getting used to wearing tanks, shorts and flip flops and suddenly I’m seeing sweaters, pants and coats.  Please don’t push it.  I know it’s all part of “seasonal” marketing and preparation to clear out the current seasons items, but it’s just too soon.

Come to think of it, I recall the Sears Fall/Winter catalogue landing on my doorstep in June.  I know what’s coming next….the Christmas catalogue….oh bite my tongue for even mentioning the “C” word!!

As we get close to a long holiday weekend, enjoy it to the max as it is the last one before Labour Day.

The “joy” of travelling by Joy!

July 29th, 2008 by linda.martelli

A very special thanks to KIX Country club member Joy Steele for providing us with some very helpful tips on how to travel lightly and avoid packing a large suitcase (then it won’t go missing, like mine!).

“Carry on” Joy and thanks again!

For me part of the secret of traveling carry-on is having a hard-sided carry-on bag. They’re around $40 (when you find them on sale) and also taking a large purse/courier bag.I usually pack 4 days worth of clothes…that includes underwear and socks.(Most places have a sink where you can wash out your “delicates” and then hang them over the shower rod, in the closet, or on the back of a chair, to dry.

I take bottoms and tops that mix and match with each other and at least 1 skirt/dress that can be worn out for a nice evening. (It’s amazing what you can do with a nice belt/necklace/bracelet/earrings to dress up a casual t-shirt and broom skirt. Depending on where I’m going I’ll take a 3 in 1 jacket that then acts as a rain coat, fleece sweater or together as a cold weather coat. (This I take on the plane with me so it doesn’t take up room in the suitcase.) Again, depending on where I’m going I take at least 1 pair of pants for those cool nights and a part of my 3 in 1 jacket acts as my sweatshirt.

Everything that goes into the suitcase gets rolled tight. When I pack a pair of pants for example, I fold them in half length-wise then start at the bottom and roll tight making sure to smooth out any wrinkles as I go. I do the same for tops and dresses. As soon as I get to my destination I make sure to hang everything up right away which then allows for the wrinkles to fall out. Most places also have an iron and ironing board you can borrow if need be. If I need to take extra sandals/shoes along I make sure to stuff them with small items (socks/nylons) and pack them in a plastic grocery bag then put them in my suitcase. Except for the small items you are packing in your shoes, save packing all other small items until the end. That way you can use them to fill any small spaces you may have between clothing and other items. Just make sure to pack your toiletries that may leak, in a sealed plastic bag so if they do leak, they don’t do so all over your clothes. (If you are going to a resort/hotel you won’t need to bring a hairdryer/shampoo/conditioner either as most places provide these.) If you do bring your own along you really only need the 100ml size as you don’t use as much as you think you do.  ;-)   Most dollar stores or pharmacies sell the travel size bottles or containers and it’s worth the few dollars you invest.

The day of travel, if I’m going to a warm climate, I make sure to wear a pair of comfortable shoes (usually the ones I’ll be spending most of my time in while on vacation) a pair of track/yoga pants with a pair of shorts underneath, t-shirt, and aforementioned 3 in 1 jacket.  In my purse/courier bag I’ll have packed all my documentation/money, my book/magazine for the plane and usually some snack packs of munchies and a bottle of water. Remember, whatever clothes you are wearing on the plane can be washed/aired out when you get to your destination and used for the trip home. Does it really matter that you arrive home in the same clothes you left in?

How many people actually wear all the clothes they bring with them on a trip? If every time you go on a trip you come home and check how many things you actually didn’t wear, you need to eliminate that number of items from your next trip. It can take a little while to get use to this type of travelling, but it can be done.packing.jpgNow we can all do better than this!

Those Born 1920-1979

July 28th, 2008 by linda.martelli

A friend of mine sent this to me and I thought I’d pass it along….some of it may apply to you, some of it won’t.  It’s just one of those things that make you go “h-m-m-m-m”.

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they

were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn’t get

tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored

lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As infants &children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT

from a bottle.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank Koolaid made with sugar,

but we weren’t

overweight because,

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo’s, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD’s, no surround-sound or CD’s, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet

or chat rooms…….

WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and

found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live

in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked

to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO DEAL

WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of them CONGRATULATIONS!
