Swamp Fishing in Brazil
November 22nd, 2010 by ken.anderson
first off, big shout to my buddy Steph “The Fishin’ Musician” Leroux for posting the link to this vid on my facebook page. When I watched this video I thought i’d never seen anything like it. Then it hit me. Yes Kenny, you see this type of thing every winter .. but it’s done on frozen lakes, and it’s called ice fishing. This is pretty close. The people in the clip dig a hole through a few layers of dirt, mud, and grass to get to the water underneath, bait a hook, and are ready to RIP LIP! Check the link below.

“Apples, Zinc & The Everything Kitchen Sink” from Brood Records (North Bay, ON), is the debut album from a locally based record label designed to promote and nurture the talents of local artists, with the intention of raising awareness of the local music scene. Produced by Ben Legett (Craig Cardiff, The Birds They Spy), “Apples, Zinc & The Everything Kitchen Sink” was recorded over the winter of 2009-10. The album was officially released September 11th, 2010, with a dynamic performance of the Brood Records artists at 100 Georges, with special guest Craig Cardiff. “Apples, Zinc & The Everything Kitchen Sink” can be found as a digital download, or on the shelves at CD PLUS, in the Northgate Shopping Centre.

Album Review: “Butter” from Dig Newton
November 3rd, 2010 by ken.anderson
This is the first time I’ve been asked to write a review for an album, and I just want to start by saying that I’m honoured to do it for a great bunch of guys in a band I’ve been watching for a few years now. Now, let’s get down to brass tax. The band Dig Newton out of North Bay, Ontario is a must see live. If you’ve seen them, you know what I’m talking about. If not, you’re missing out … BIG TIME! They are one part rock band, one part funk band, one part jam band, and all around awsome. They remind me of a band from southern Ontario called Zuul’s Evil Disco, but with a lot cleaner sound. I got a hold of the album “Butter” a few weeks back, and threw it on to check out what this band had to offer in terms of original music. Sure, I’ve seen them play originals at gigs in the past, but those nights are always filled with conversations with friends, and alcohol consumption, so I was very excited to take it all in with the headphones on. As soon as I pushed play on the first track I started to get this “head bobbing” thing going on. I jumped up out of my seat (tried to dance … I stink at dancing) and grabbed a couple of friends I work with here at the radio station to let them take a listen as well. The reaction was something like, “What, these guys are from town? Who are they?” My response was, “One of, if not, the best band going right now in Northern Ontario”. The album is loaded with great vocals from lead singer Jesse Thomas, Shawn Moore provides the chunky guitar riffs on tracks like “Turn Around” and “Beep Beep”, and sweet bass lines from Steve Houlden on songs like “Mountain”. Rob Joanisse drums provide a nice rhythm and are not overpowering in any way, but definitely not overshadowed by any of the other guys. The tracks “Reach Down”, “Future Days”, “Beep Beep”, and “Get Together” are my favorites on the album, because they are tunes you can both chill out to, or throw on at a party to get people up off their butts. The album “Butter” from Dig Newton gets two thumbs up.
World Series Look
October 27th, 2010 by ken.anderson
Recorded on October 27th, 2010 … the 6th anniversary of the Red Sox winning their first World Series in 86 years. The day they “Reversed The Curse” of the Bambino. Although, I must apologize. When speaking about Juan Uribe, I gave his regular season numbers, which was intended. When I said I didn’t hear much about him in the “post season”, I meant to say regular season. I’ve heard his name a lot in the past month – the playoffs – because he’s playing really well.

Doctober
October 7th, 2010 by ken.anderson
Last night I watched one of the greatest performances in sports history. I say one of the greatest because not that long ago the Boston Red sox came back from a three game deficit to beat the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS. Roy “Doc” Halladay made his first post season start against the Reds, and it was a game that I won’t soon forget. On October 6th, 2010, Roy Halladay became only the second player in MLB history to throw a no-hitter in the playoffs. When I walked in to my local just as the fourth inning was getting under way, and even though it was early in the game, you could just feel something magical was going to happen. Plain and simple…Doc was dealing. His control was right on. He threw the ball down the middle, painted the corners, and had a cutter that just dropped off the table as it crossed the plate. He was outstanding, and it could not have happened to a better guy. Jays fans wish he was doing it in Toronto, but I’m sure that he had a lot of support from Jays fans across the country. I don’t even like the Philadelphia Phillies, but when they got the final out, I jumped four feet in the air. The last time I remember being that excited about a ball game was when my Red Sox won the World Series back in 2007. The 2010 MLB playoffs are just beginning, and I will be calling it DOCTOBER. I hope Roy gets his ring.
Well, I managed to keep all of my teeth during my guest referee appearance this past Sunday (October 3rd) during the Maximum Pro Wrestling event. All of the matches were fantastic, but I think the best part was seeing what goes on behind the scenes. Because I was included as part of the show, and I was nervous about stepping in the squared circle, I showed up early to ask a few questions. Before I went looking for advice, I decided to lend a hand in setting up the ring. The first thing that surprised me was that the wrestlers themselves were required to set it up. I guess there are no “roadies” in wrestling. The other thing that surprised me was that there is not much padding under the canvas. I was under the impression that there were springs, and hydraulic type things under there, but there was no more than chipboard, and a small layer of foam ½ an inch thick. That stuff isn’t the Donald Trump extra foamy matress set. Believe me, I carried it in to the building. Say what you want about professional wrestling, but these athletes put there bodies on the line, and their own safety at risk every time they get in the ring. Better them than me. Thanks to Maximum Pro Wrestling for allowing me to be a ref, and for putting on a great show.
Meet and Greet Gone Wrong
September 27th, 2010 by ken.anderson
I wasn’t too sure about what to expect from the competitors in the Main Event at the Max Pro Wrestling show this weekend, but it’s becoming clear, very quickly! Big Daddy Hammer, and Dane Jarris have been freinds for more than 10 years, and face off against each other this weekend. By the way, this will be Dane Jarris’ last match ever … it just hope he makes it to the match itself! I’m not sure how close these two guys are now following a run in this past weekend. I’ll let the video do the talking. Just click on the link below.

The event is being held at Algonquin S.S. this Sunday. Tickets are available at Tammie’s Queen Of Wings on Main St.
