Fishing Outside the Box !!!

June 14th, 2011 by Kathy

So often we fishermen and women, get caught up in using what we think “works.”  Meaning, we use the same presentation’s for the same fish over and over.  We probably do that because we have all had some success doing so.  But, I just want to remind all of you about thinking outside the “tackle box.”

Last week, a listener by the name of Arleen dropped me a note on my blog to say, for the first time ever, she tried using slugs as bait.  (along with a spinner and jig head)  Much to her surprise, she caught some incredible Walleye with that presentation, and, said she would definitely be trying that again.  (and encouraged others to try as well)

Sometimes trying something new can be just as wonderful and great as “ole faithful.”  In fact, ya may find it gives you even better results !  Keep that mind the next time you reach into your bag/box for that same old set up…….

And for letting me know about her story….Arleen is the first winner of our fishing blog give-aways !  She has won herself  a pair of tickets to see the Blue Bombers play next month.  (courtesy of Manitoba Wildlife Federation)

You too could walk away with some great prizes, just for letting me know what you’re catchin and how you’re catchin it.  Plus….send me some pics……would love to see em and we’ll make sure they get posted on my blog !

Happy Fishing !!!

Free Fishing !!!

June 7th, 2011 by Kathy

For those of you who don’t normally take to the waters to drop a line….you might want to look into doing just that this weekend.  It’s Family Fishing weekend June 11th and 12th.  That means, everyone in the province can fish for free !  (you don’t need to go out and purchase a license)  Soooo…..if you haven’t been able to get out and enjoy the sport lately….or maybe, you’ve never tried fishing before…..this is the weekend to do so !

I know I mentioned this before, but sadly, it bares repeating.  I was out last weekend doing a little river fishing on the Red.  Didn’t have time to load the boat up and head out of town, but, desperately wanted to drop a line in the water….so, found a not so flooded spot at Pembina and Bishop Grandin.  What I also found however…..TRASH !  Could not believe what other fishermen and women had left behind.  Empty minnow tubs, old pickerel rig packages, beer cans, old line…..it was astounding !  And, this wasn’t garbage that had come out of the river….this was trash recently left behind.  I ended up taking the time to do what I hope you all would do if you ran across this…grabbing a plastic bag scooping it all up and disposing of it properly.  Please people….remember to only leave behind your footprints !

This week we’ll be drawing our first winner from all of our blog tips.  All you need to do is let me know what you’re catchin and how you’re catchin it…you could win everything from Bomber tickets to Walleye Leather–one of the hottest products on the market.

 Happy Fishing !!

Green fishing and MWF raffle !

May 31st, 2011 by Kathy

First, a thanks to Arleen who wrote to say……..while fishing last weekend, she tried using slugs as bait….and it worked !  In fact she apparently caught some pretty decent Walleye with them…so might be something you want to add to your arsenal.

Reminder…you can win some incredible “schwag” by giving us your tips and pictures.  We’d love to see what you’re catchin these days and how you’re catchin it.  We’ll make a draw next week for the best tip/picture, so get those entries in !

On this week’s show we talk about “green fishing.”  Meaning…what we all can do when fishing to help the environment.  Below are a few tips to think about, next time you head out on the water.

1.  why not start using re-chargeable batteries for your gear ?  (like your fishfinder)  You’ll save 50 to 75 of the regular batteries by doing so.

2.  why not park the boat one weekend and do a little fishing off shore?  Not only are you going to save a TON of gas money, but, it’s certainly healthier for our waters.

3.  whether you’re fishing off shore or in a boat, take a look around.  Do you see any trash/garbage?  If so, take a moment and dispose of it properly.

Finally, a reminder about the Manitoba Wildlife Federation’s Conservation Raffle.  Tickets are a mere 3 for 10 dollars, and that 10 bucks could win ya a brand new Toyota Tundra truck or even a new boat !  (plus a ton of other prizes !) Various groups are selling across the province, or, you can simply get ahold of MWF for tickets or more information.

Happy Fishing !!!

We want to hear from you !!  Since fishing season is in full swing…..we want to start hearing and seeing your fishing tales.  Simply drop me a line, (sorry for the pun) and, we’ll get your stories and pictures up on this blog.  And, each month, we’ll make a draw out of all the submissions we get, for some incredible prizes !!

 Shaw Kenora Bass International !!!

Above is a shot of Steven Wintemute, (editor of Hooked Magazine) and I, doing the live 3 day broadcast of the Shaw Kenora Bass International, held August 5th to 7th on beautiful Lake of the Woods.  130 teams took part this year, with some of the biggest names in the sport on the Kenora harbourfront.  Mike Miller from the Fishin Canada show, Gord Pyzer- co host of Real Fishin Radio with Bob Izumi, and Mike Richards, captain of the Philadelphia Flyers.  For the first time in many years, the weather was actually pretty decent for all 3 days, and, a good time was had by all.  If you want a complete list of the standings, check out KBIfishing.com.  You’ll also find info on how you can get a team in for next year !

Big thanks to Darrin Bohonis for the great shot !

Happy Fishin……..

Good Day !

Hope everyone is having an awesome summer, and that the fishing has been great !  Couple of things I want to remind you about……the first, I mentioned on my fishing report this week, but, in case you missed it…..

The feds have announced some new changes to the boating card system, effective in September.  As most of you probably already know, when taking to the water and driving a boat, you now MUST HAVE a pleasure operator card in hand.  This involves taking a course on boating safety, with a final exam.  If you get caught without that card, the fine is a whopping 200 bucks !  However, because there have been 4 boating deaths in recent weeks, the feds were asked to get a little tougher on the course.  That means, starting this fall, the course will take much longer to complete and the final exam will also be “toughened up.”  For those who have their PAC cards already…no worries….you don’t have to take the course again, but for those who’ve been procrastinating in getting one….don’t wait !  Again, the new “tougher version” of the course gets unveiled in September.

Just days away now from the start of the SHAW KENORA BASS INTERNATIONAL.  This is a 3 day tournament held on beautiful Lake of the Woods.  Big money, big prizes up for grabs…and some of the country’s top anglers take part.  For those who want to take part, I wouldn’t wait toooo long to get your entry in as it usually fills up pretty fast.  For those who’d like to watch and see some of the monster fish being weighed in…that happens down at the Harbourfront Thursday, Friday, Saturday afternoons around 3 p.m.  If ya can’t make it down to Kenora, not to worry as Shaw will be running the 3 day tourney live on their network, with the final day being broadcast nation-wide on CJBN.  Yours truly, along with Steven Wintemute–editor of Hooked Magazine, will be your show hosts.  It’s gonna be some great fishing !!!!

National Fishing Week !

July 5th, 2010 by Kathy

Hope everyone had a great Canada Day weekend, and, you were able to get out and do some fishing.  I know I was out on both the Assiniboine and Red rivers this weekend….catching lots of sauger, goldeye and yes, bullhead’s !

Don’t know if ya know this but, it is National Fishing Week this week.  (July 4th to 11th)  It’s a week to celebrate this great hobby and sport, and to also try and get kids involved in fishing.  If that’s something you’ve always wanted to do, (getting your kids out) but, didn’t know where to start….let me tell ya about a great event happening at the Forks this weekend.  The Winnipeg Fish Festival runs on Saturday, July 10th, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.  This is a great day with lots of seminars on things like the ”how to’s” on fishing, where to fish and how to handle your catch.  Plus, there are a ton of activities being offered for kids of all ages.  Admission is free….so no excuse their !  If you want more information about the entire day, just google, Winnipeg Fish Festival !

 Happy Fishing !
