Long Weekend Fishing !
October 8th, 2011 by Kathy
I’m sure hoping the forecast is wrong for this holiday Monday. As of this morning, they are calling for rain….but, you know how that goes !
Busy weekend with lots of Thanksgiving activities so Monday is the only day to get out and toss a line in.
The great thing about our city is that you certainly don’t have to go far to do it. My plan is to do a little river fishing in town. Either St. Vital park, or Bourkvale park. (Red or Assiniboine) Will probably try St. Vital park first…as the chances of catching something really big is better. (cat fish, walleye etc.) Since I haven’t fished off shore their for awhile, I’m not sure how the riverbank is…but, will definitely check it out.
Going to bring the Dude, and my Pops–CK-One out too. Last year at this very time, my Dad landed what was the biggest fish of his life at St. Vital park. He had a master angler cat fish on board…which sadly, decided to jump off the line just as we were about to pull it on shore. So, no picture’s with his monster. I think the Dude was more upset about it than him ! He fought that fish for over 20 minutes, with it jumping in the air several times….would have been sooo nice to see him hold up his “prize” at the end.
But…that’s the great thing about fishing. You can go out and try again !
Okay…weather Gods….please change the forecast for Monday !
Happy Fishing !
Good Weekend to go Fishing !!!!
September 28th, 2011 by Kathy
It’s tiiimmmeee !!! The Greenbacks have started to run on the Red River, and that means some incredible fishing for the next few weeks. Without a doubt this is my favourite time of year to drop a line in the water, as there’s nothing like hookin a beautiful green 24-25 inch pickerel and havin a good fight reelin it in. (and don’t forget about the wonderful fillets for eatin later !)
So, that’s my plan this weekend. On Sunday, I’m going to head out to Selkirk park to do a little fishin off shore. “Dude” and I will pack up the folding chairs, the frozen minnows, some hot coffee and, plant ourselves on the riverbank hopin something big comes our way !!!
Happy Fishing !!!

Never too old too learn !!
August 24th, 2011 by Kathy
If you talk to any of the expert fishermen and women in this country….they’ll all tell you that, they never stop learning about this great sport/hobby. Whether it’s new equipment….new techniques…..there is always something new to add to your arsenal of fishing knowledge.
Here are a couple of things I’ve learned recently…..
1. in most instances, a strike, followed quickly by the hookset, is better for the fish. The fish has less time to swallow the entire bait and subsequently, the hook as well. This reduces the likelihood of gut hooking the fish and diminishing its chance of survival.. This by the way is particularily true when fishing live, dead or cut baits. Now keep in mind though….hooks like circle hooks do allow for a slower hook set.
2. it’s a good idea to paint/seal of any lead jigs…especially smaller ones. (you can do this with chip resistant paint or even a clear sealer like nail polish) This will help prevent the leaching of lead into the water should the jig get snagged and break off. It can also help prevent sickness to any wildlife that happens to ingest or get caught on the jig after it has broken off.
Keep those two tips in mind next time ya head out on the water.
As for me….I’m off to do some more learning !!

Ultimate Fish Fry !!!
August 16th, 2011 by Kathy
On this week’s 92 CITI FM/Manitoba Wildlife Federation fishing report…we talk about cookin up your catch !
In case you missed the show….here are a couple of things to keep in mind. Fish are okay to stay on ice, for at least a couple of days. Longer than that…and they begin to taste and smell fishy ! You can freeze your catch with good results for 5 to 6 month’s.
There is nothing like eating fresh fish ! To that end…why not try a shore lunch? Pretty easy to do…..just make sure you bring a few essentials with ya next time you head out to cast a line. Tinfoil….at least a couple of sheets/strips worth. Simply wrap up your catch, throw some marg. or butter in with it, add some of your favorite spices…maybe garlic salt, lime, lemon or onion and seal. Put it on your campfire coals and turn at least once. Remember fish doesn’t take long to cook. About 10 mins. per inch of thickness.
Next time ya head out on the water….why not try and plan for that shore lunch? Guaranteed, you won’t taste a better piece of fish !!!

Happy National Fishing Week !
July 6th, 2011 by Kathy
As you may have heard on the air the past couple of days, this week is national fishing week. It’s a great time to try this great hobby and sport, or maybe get the kids involved for the first time. I think I’ve mentioned this before in an earlier post but, there is a great family friendly web site, which will give you a ton of information….www.catchfishing.com.
Also…..it’s Fish Festival weekend here in the city. Come by to the Forks this weekend, bring the kids, and learn all you need to know about the how’s and where’s to fish. Trust me, even if your already an “acclaimed” fisherman-or woman, this is a fun day for all !
Hope you all will continue to send your fishing stories and pictures. Remember, each month we pick a winner out of all our submissions and award a fantastic prize….like Bomber tickets, courtesy of our partners at Manitoba Wildlife Federation. (by the way, make sure you take a second and check out their web site too ! Tons of fishing information on it, and details about the 2011 Manitoba Wildlife Conservation Raffle !!!)
Happy Fishing !!
Kids and Fishing !!!
June 21st, 2011 by Kathy
Hope all the Dad’s out there had a fantastic Father’s Day….and perhaps some of you had a chance to get a line in the water this past weekend.
I actually had a father ask me recently….”how do I get my kids started with fishing?” Well, the first thing to do is to keep it nice and simple. Go to a river, lake edge or a dock, and get the kids to cast a worm or artificial lure in the water. Remember to keep hooks and lures really small…and….to go after the smaller fish near shore, like Rock Bass. Your kids will have an absolute blast reeling those in ! Hey, it’s the thrill of hooking a fish your kids will remember, not how big it was ! (that happens when ya get older !) Also get the kids to check out some web-sites like www.catchfishing.com. The site has a great kids zone with tips and games to help them get hooked on this awesome sport/hobby.
Remember tickets are still available for the Manitoba Wildlife Federation’s 2011 Conservation Raffle. They are only 3 for 10 dollars and you have a shot at over 50 incredible prizes, including a 2011 Toyota Tundra ! Simply call 633-5967 to get yours. Or, drop me a line here at the station, and we’ll make sure we get some into your hands !!
