One MILLION Dollars

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

And here i thought over 20 bucks for a collection was a ripoff. One Million Dollars is what Superman’s first comic book went for today. Sold via an online auction site from a private seller to a private buyer. Probably because no one would admit to laying down that much coin for Superman.

That car's been getting a raw deal for nearly 75 years

A lot of us know that cover right off the get go. Superman lifting a car and smashing it into the truly menacing clump of dirt. The guy in the bottom left loosing his stuff because that’s probably his car and his insurance won’t cover it. Pretty undwhelming by today’s standards but for ’38 it was all “Dag, yo” crazy good.

It’s hard to justify paying one million dollars for this comic but it’s harder, still, to NOT justify it. Clearly if you’re dropping a cool million to have the first time Supes went out in tights, you’ve got change to spare (if you don’t that’s a whole new bag of worms). So way to make a very collectible purchase on what’s pretty much the first superhero comic ever. Investment opportunity is pretty much out at least for a few years because this million dollar purchase just set the new record for the price of a comic book. BTW, this thing originally only cost 10 cents. Put it in these terms though: this really is the holy grail of comic books. If you were a big game hunter, this book is a unicorn.

The only real problem I have with this sale is the character itself. To be fair, ole Supes started pre-1940s. But as far as storytelling is concerned, he’s a terrible character.
