Oscar animates me

March 8th, 2010

Well the Academy Awards are over, the dresses and jewellery have been returned and now we can head out to see the movies and the actors who won in the film that made them win that precious piece of future advertising. I think the only Oscar nominated film I saw this year was ‘Avatar’. I was interested in seeing ” The Hurt Locker” and “Precious” but am afraid I’ve heard so much about them both that it won’t live up to the hype I have been inundated with. I still want to see the Coen brothers movie and not because, ( as noted in the ‘O Brother Where Art Thou’ blog), they were going to be filming in the region.

I did manage to see all of the films in the Animated Shorts category. Of all five animated films I was most in awe by the french film that won called “Logorama”. The animation was nothing spectacular but visually it was stunning as the characters and landscape are all brand logos. Everything from the seagulls to the animals in a zoo. The story is about two Michelin men cops who are after the bad guy Ronald McDonald. I’ve actually seen the thing three times as it has an almost ‘Where’s Waldo’ effect on me.

The film was made by a group in France known as H5 and features 2500 current and historical brands in the U.S. An interesting perspective on American brand culture from an outsider. I wondered how the filmmakers were able to get away with using all those brand names and not face any lawsuits; at least I haven’t heard of any yet. I did notice during a website search that the film has been taken off some sites due to brand-logo issues. If you do find a copy of it be warned there’s foul language in this piece so I wouldn’t watch it with young kids around.
