Tricking Drivers into Slowing Down
February 5th, 2011 by Jennifer Manchester
I passed a speed trap on my way to work today.
Of course traffic slowed down a lot in the area.
It made me think- your immediate response, as soon as you see a police car, is to hit the brakes. Even if you don’t know it’s a speed trap.
So, why not just park cop cars along the highway- no one has to be in them.
Or get crafty and use a 3Dish looking sign or billboard of a police car on the side of the road.
Actually it’s already been done.
This is actually an advertisement from Turkey which turned out to be very effective at slowing people down.
There’s actually cut outs for sale online as well!
Like this one:
Apparently they’ve been used in Canada…I’ve never seen one.
Have you?
Do you think they’d work?
Are they fair?

Womens’ Brain VS Mens’ Brain
January 30th, 2011 by Jennifer Manchester
What do women think about more often than sex?
According to a British survey, women think about food more often than sex-actually twice as often.
It found that 25 percent of women think about food every 30 minutes.
While only 10 percent say they think about sex that often.
Sound right?
And it’s not necessarily about what they want to eat, but more about what they shouldn’t be eating.
Yep, almost half say thier always thinking about dieting or thier weight.
If that’ true….than this is one time I’d rather have a guy’s brain!
Bonus Code: For 1000 goldmine points enter the percent (just the number) of how many women say they think about food more often than sex into the goldmine at mountainfm.com
Beardo or Weirdo?
January 23rd, 2011 by Jennifer Manchester
We’ve definately had a few weeks in the season so far where we’ve needed to bundle up a little extra. Especially if you’re heading up the hills to play in the snow.
Keeping warm can be tricky. Especially when your face is concerned. Not much options to keep the lower part of your face cozy other than a ski mask, which unfortuanetly has been popularised by bank robbers….never a good thing looking like that.
That is until recently with the idea of the Beardo.
Rob mentioned back during movember for those that were hair growing challenged but I figured it was worth another look at it, especially cuz this is really the time to use it!
Actually, you may have seen guys sporting them in Whistler cuz that’s where the idea came from.
Jeff Phillips created the first make shift Beardo while on 7th Heaven on Blackcomb.
Really inventive idea in my opinion but question is would you wear it. Especially off the mountain?
Certainly a conversation starter!
Bonus points for you goldiggers: Enter Beardo into the goldmine for 1000 points.
Best of the Decade Part 2
December 31st, 2010 by Jennifer Manchester
As we wrap up 2010, lots to look back on, not only in the past year but in the past decade.
One things for sure, the last 10 years certainly saw an explosion of new websites, some of which have become an everyday part of life.
Many of the sites that we have bookmarked on our browser were born in the past decade.
How many of these could you not live without now?
Flikr-one of the most popular and easy ways to share your photos over the web, actually created back in 2006 by a company in Vancouver.
Groupon-still more or less in it’s infancy, launched in 2008, it’s gaining popularity but don’t feel bad if you don’t have any idea what it’s all about. Basically it’s a deal-a-day site that gives you and your friends a chance to score deals from everything from yoga classes to restaraunts.
Plenty of Fish-a free online dating site, started back in 2004 by a BCIT grad, it’s launched a number of relationships, and more than a few bad dates.
Twitter-after the success of Facebook, Twitter launced in 2006, and is now one of the best sites to get up to the minute news, celeb gossip and the chance to follow your favourite celebs or idols.
Facebook-launched in 2004 by Mark Zuckenberg (who many of us know now thanks to the Social Network movie) now has 500 million worldwide active users and this year was the most visited site beating out Google!
And finally
YouTube-it’s generated millions of 15 minute of famers and even some lasting celebs (Justin Bieber-yeah too bad for that one) was only born 5 years ago back in 2005.
For your viewing pleasure here, YouTubes year in review:
There’s plenty more, including Failblog and Texts From Last Night that get honourable mentions. Any others I missed let me know in the comment section.
And enjoy the New Years bonus code worth 1500 points. Name the site that facebook beat for most visited this year (one word all lower case).
Happy Happy New Year!
Do you owe it to your marriage?
December 23rd, 2010 by Jennifer Manchester
A lot of couples have to deal with certain issues, especially in the bedroom (I’m talking snoring and stealing pillows-get your mind out of the gutter!).
Including flatulence??
Well apparently its a big enough issue that they’ve created a comforter that somehow makes those unsettling smells disappear.
Yep, apparently this is for real!
Would you actually consider buying this? Christmas gift maybe? (Yikes!)
On a side note-Wanna wish all the Mountain FM listeners a very Merry Christmas, hope you get to spend it with family and friends, and of course get spoiled!
And lets hope you can use these 1500 points in the goldmine for an entry into something nice! Enter this bonus code into the goldmine: marriage blanket.

Back on Top
December 22nd, 2010 by Jennifer Manchester
I don’t know about you but I personally love hearing about comebacks. People that have fallen from grace, got thier act together and are back on top.
Well, actually I like hearing about most people’s comebacks-but not all of them. Some I’d prefer would stay out of the limelight for good.
Kanye West is one. After the mess he made at the VMA’s a few years back, stealing the mic from Taylor Swift I think he should never be taken seriously again. But low and behold he’s back, and people seem to have forgiven him.
Another one is Sarah Palin. McCain and her lost to Obama. Her 15 minutes of fame should be over. And yet she has a new reality show and continues to draw attention.
But then there’s the one’s that I think truly deserve it.
Like….Betty White!
88 years old and killing it! Seriously how amazing would it to be her age and rocking it still-one can dream.
Biggest comeback of the year though would have to go to the late night host that got completely shafted, and his dream slashed after NBC decided against thier original decision.
Conan O’Brien-after months of promotion, webisodes and even a Conan blimp, he returned to late night sporting a beard and a bit of a chip on his shoulder, but his very own show-done his way.
So there’s a few of the people that got back on top this year. Check out Time’s Top 10 Comebacks of 2010 list here
Oh and Bonus Code of course: Who did Kanye West screw over at the VMA’s a few years back? Enter the first and last name all lower case into the goldmine for 750 points!

What’s a “Turkey Drop?”
December 18th, 2010 by Jennifer Manchester
“The most wonderful time of the year.” Not for everyone according to facebook.
It’s the most popular time of the year to hit the malls, pig out, give to charity…Oh… and break up with someone.
Well that’s what researchers came up with by looking at facebook statues throughout the year that had “we broke up” “breaking up” “taking a break” etc. in them.
It’s actually so popular this time of year that it has a name: the “turkey drop”
Why? Because the period begins right before (american) thanksgiving and ends right after christmas.
Don’t believe it-well it’s happening in Hollywood right now.
Just in the past week there’s been a bunch of celeb breakups like Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, Dexter’s Michael C. Hall and his wife, and Canadian Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson.
You’d think people would want the company over the holidays, especially on new years eve. Apparently not.
Seems odd, but some say its common for college and university kids who come home from their first semester in a new world and realize the one they left behind isn’t the one for them anymore. Or it could just be the daunting stress of having to spend the holidays with the in laws.
Plus it means one less pricey christmas gift (that’s terrible though!)
I remember back in highschool I actually waited till after christmas and both our birthdays in January to break up with my boyfriend. And no not because of the gifts-I thought it would be nicer of me. It still sucked regardless.
Have you ever been broken up with around christmas, or done the deed? Share your story below.
Oh and be advised, according to the facebook research, there’s actually 2 popular break up times in the year- Spring Break is the other one.
Oh and Bonus Points-Who just broke up with Vanessa Hudgens? Name the dude in the bonus code section of the goldmine and you’ll get the points.
Best of the Decade Part 1
December 9th, 2010 by Jennifer Manchester
Time again this year for the annual best , top 50, most memorable, etc. of the year. And this year, a decade into the millenium, we look back at the best of the 2000′s.
Including one of my favourites: The top momments in music of the past decade!
Any come to your mind immediately?
One of course is the death of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, in the summer of 2009. You must remember where you were when you heard the shocking news, right? I was on the computer and facebook and twitter just exploded with MJ RIP’s.
Remember when the MJ’s daughter took the mic and you actually realized he was a father?
From a sad momment to a just plain embarrasing, car wreck of a momment courtesy of Jessica Simpson’s little sis:
And then there’s Kanye West. He’s been apart of a more than a couple real idiot momments of the past decade including this one where he picks on the sweet and innocent Taylor Swift.
What are the momments in music of the past decade that spring to mind for you?
Check out Billboard’s Top 50 momments in music as well for a further walk down memory lane.
And of course head over to the goldmine www.mountainfm.com to Enter the Bonus Code: Decade for 1000 points.
