How To Talk To Little Girls…..
Thursday, December 15th, 2011
I’m guilty.
Guilty of saying to little girls, “oh you’re so pretty!” or “what a pretty dress!” or “you have the nicest hair!”
That stops now. Not that we cannot compliment them…but why is it always their appearance that’s the first thing we notice and mention?

That picture is my stepdaughter Ryleigh on the right and her friend Maddie. There’s no denying they’re gorgeous. But who cares? Ryleigh donates her Christmas money to families in developing countries so they can build farms, schools and homes. She has 2 two year old brothers (her mama and I both had baby boys 4 months apart) and I’ve never ONCE heard her complain about them….and we all know sometimes 2 year old boys are all kinds of annoying. She sings, she dances, she’s always smiling and she makes people laugh their faces off. Maddie is an expert equestrian, plays more sports than I can count, insists on wearing rainbows everyday, takes piles of crap (and love) from her big sisters like a champ, helps out with a brand new baby brother and when she and her Mama (my sister by choice) have sleepovers at our house, Maddie is the first one outta bed early Saturday morning to get my little boy, feed him breakfast and inspire gales of little boy laughter.
So I hereby vow to always encourage them to keep adding to that list of glorious accomplishments and stop focusing on their looks.
