Earl Scruggs paassed away yesterday at the age of 88. Sons say he died of natural causes and if you’re any kind of country music fan you know there was absolutely nothing natural about the way he played the banjo. he changed the instrument way back then from a rythum background gig to a forefront ‘lead instrument. More coming up on the legend Earl Scruggs on the Great Country Oldies show.

Stop by Catherines on McNabb and get the locsk cut for their Annual Kits for Kidneys event on all day Saturday! Help out this great cause.

Rain, sleet, T-storms…windy..all in one day!

March 27th, 2012 by jeff.mcneice

Well those are today’s weather words on our forecast..all today folks!

So far it’s been raining and sleeting but it looks as though the preci will be short-lived. Thankfully!

Crops could be wrecked from the turn to cold from last week’s heat. Let’s hope not.

You guys answered the poll and it seems that 80 percent responded that you should NOT Facebook with the boss. That is more than the national average that said by a vote of 70 percent, that Facebooking with the boss is a bad deal.

My boss says he will Tweet, but not Facebook.

Thanks for your answers this morning and we’ll ask another question in the morning. Maybe it will be concerning today’s Ontario budget which comes down the pipe this afternoon. Listen for news on that document this afternoon and again i the morning as Craig Perdue and the Q104 news team make their way through it!

If you love dark chocolate, you tend to be thinner. A few times a week can lower your BMI ( body mass index) So GO FOR IT!

I know with diabetes, the darker the more cocao and the lower the sugar content.

Dancing with the Stars, the first results show is tonight and the first star will be sent off the dance floor. Who do YOU think it will be?

Martina Navratilova had the lowest scores of the night. Half Pint Laura Ingells did not fair much better in the scoring, but America may keep her around for a bit I think.

Hey I’m tweeting now and if you log in to www.twitter.com you can search for me…I am a very big time rookie with the ‘tweets…but if you go to Jeff@happycountrydj you can fire one off to me..and I will answer back..since you would be among my first ‘followers’..We shall embark on this new journey together my friends!

Hey I butt- called mom yesterday… I thought it couldn’t be possible , then I did it. LOL

How embarrassing!

Chat in the morning..Join me for the Wednesday edition of the radio show and please stay and play safely today with the mixed precip, you may find yourself butt-calling someone as you lay on slippery pavement.

WOW! I love the SOO!

March 26th, 2012 by jeff.mcneice

It took me 23 and some years to say it out loud ( my parents are still waiting for me to come HOME to Southern Ontario! LOL)
After a week in Orlando at Universal with the family and a three day session in TO for all the radio types across the Country within the Rogers radio group I am yelling it from the microphone.’.I love it here in the SOO!’
I love the face-paced , looking for a cab, always hurry hurry hurry lifestyle of Toronto, but I had serious trouble ( ask my wife Lyd) gearing down on Saturday, thinking I had pressing things to do, but guess what? I didn’t! I get it today on Monday on the air with you listeners
I don’t need to hail a taxi, or reserve to take part in a forum, or plan to get to point B…from point A….I am already at both points here at home in the lovely Soo.
Funny how you get used to your surroundings and adapt quickly to your home, wherever it may be.
I was in shock for at least the first 24 hours gettting off the Porter flight in The Big Smoke last Tuesday afternoon. To tell you the truth, I was in ‘full nap mode’ but that was not to be in the cards as we hurried to eat, hurried to check in to the Fabulous Royal York Hotel downtown. We rushed to our rooms to ‘freshen up’, which meant catch a breath and wipe the sweat from our brow and head to the Meet N Greet. All of the sudden it was Friday noon and we were ready to get home on the return Porter flight. Thankfully , we did not have to deal with the ongoing Air Canada Wildcat dispute.
I learned much from my fellow announcers from across the country. How they do things in other radio markets and why they love what they do.
Had a great time with the fellows from Medicine Hat. Rockers!!!!!As we were hosted to a fabulous night of fine eats as we watched the live Radio Awards in the Royal York Ballroom.
I will chat more about the event and the weekend and the McNeice Ranch Spring break trip to Orlando that happened..or did it? I forget..I had to hurry along…and wait…!
I am making time to get the dishes done, doggies petted and watered…and some thoughts of a supper wehn Lyd gets home. But, it will all come in due time…I can nap this afternoon and prey that that effin’ phone doesn’t ring! Is this called, RELAXING?’ You bet cha!

NO More Sleeps!

March 9th, 2012 by jeff.mcneice

You writers of blogs ever hit the wrong button and delete a very clever ( so I thunk ) post? I just did.
I spent an hour on it and was deep in thought when my left hand had a spasm and that was it. Instead of saving as I went..I did NOT! SHIT! )(&%*&%(&*^%(&^$&(^$!
\Well I will tell you the meat of it and leave the sides for another time. Now don’t you hate when the big anchors of major networks and guests say this, ‘Oh yes, but that’s a whole ‘nother’ story!…That’s not a friggin word. Say it’s another story. Gawd! LOL…
Well the bags are packed and we’re ready to head down the I 75 to sunny Florida for all points south, the bus is pulling out late this afternoon.
Lyd is great at remembering things I forget. Big time, but I claim that I have everything at the door, as we are set to depart. But do I? Lyd says no and proceeds to go through the big quiz ( guys hate being wrong eh? admit it)
You got your keys, wallet, glasses, pills?
Then you look at ‘the wife’ in utter disgust..’Gawd do I look that stupid? Im not an idiot hun..Of course I have all that!”
Lyd then says to me, “Um then what do I have here!?’
Um, ( Jackie Gleason look of embarrassment here) well, my wallet and keys and glasses and credit card and cash…
“Sorry dear, you rock, I am indeed an ass and I am sorry, I just wanted to hit the road NOW!”
( insert Honeymooners here- ‘)
Baby , you’re da greatest!
I am taking two teachers ( my girls) and their little brother to Disney. It’s going to be a hoot, I have been to the Magic Kingdom no less than ten times., but have never seen Potter or Universal Studios. I did nearly chuck my lunch on Space Mountain once.
For Lyd it’s anticipating the food on the road and at the destination point.
She’s a ‘Crack Head!’ in the good sense ..the non-drug sense though I do feel she’s addicted to the Old Crackwer Barrell Country store!…In fact Uncle Hershals big breeky has awakened her from a sound sleep . She says to my father, “Mur, that was a Cracker Barrell!’…Notice I said ,’was’ because that had worn off with my dad two or three stops ago…
See he has really improved, like most dads back then we got to hear the speech.’ Now you must go pee…even if you don’t have to , cause I am not stopping again!.’ He meant it…we had to tie knots in it, for 12 hours after that last stop, til we got where we were going, 12 hours later!~ Just kidding dad (NOT)
So I aims to be prepped and ready later today. Hey, by the way, I will give the exact same speech to the travellers. LMAO!
So gang, I think I recapped most of what I felt I had already written..Arggg!
Have a very pleasant week friends and I may see you with Mickey or on the road. DO play and travel safe.
Now leave me as I head home ahead of Lyd and check that the keys wallet cards and glasses and cash ARE packed.
Jeffrey in the am!
I’m outta here!

Pink is Perfect!

February 29th, 2012 by jeff.mcneice

Wow!! So nice to see a lot of Q staffers in pink today! Supporting the Stop Bullying Campaign…

Unfortunatley, it is running rampant in our community and across the globe since the craze of social media as yet another method for the thugs to create fear and far too often, follow through on threats to the innocent people.

It makes me sick to my stomach to see our children threatened in ANY way, shape or form.

I relayed one story of my youth regarding 3 thugs taking me out at school when I first moved to Sudbury from Mississauga.

They threw me up over the 10 foot fence and ripped my favorite polyester golf pants and Buddy Holly stylish horn-rimmed glasses!

When we all went to the office..the art teacher came in and said, ‘Ha ha, Jeff Jeffrey, they’re just playin’! Playing!! Are you kidding me??

Actions by three thugs + me = no consequences! NONE!

I walked out of there with my tail between my legs, feeling I had provoked these guys in some way and was told to just carry on as if nothing happened. The three were laughing behind me…

That was grade seven. Guess what? These things happen today and yes they happen to me. We must be a ‘good find’ to bullies. We must omit a scent of inadequacy to these fools.

I nearly ‘went off’ this morning on the air because my son Jeffrey was beat up and embarrassed last week at his grade school.

It appears to me that if a child has got enough pent up anger inside their little bodies to unleash on a smiling, laughing innocent individual who was having fun in the snow, then there is an obvious need for the child to seek a professional’s advice.

This was not a case of, ‘He did, he did’, there was a teacher watching the entire incident and noted to the principal as such. No ‘different angle’ or as I have heard, ‘I can’t believe it happened that way!’

Many folks have to learn to ‘own it’. Take responsibilty for the actions of your children and get them some help.

Never have I witnessed so much hate in a society that is supposed to be so tolerant.

I know my son will be stronger after this ‘friend’ nailed him. There have been apologies and life carries on as kids are seemingly the ‘forgiving ones’ . Thank God for that!

How does the saying go, I guess the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree. I just remember how damn humiliated and helpless I felt, wondering where I had pissed these people off by simply trying my best to get ‘A’s in school.

There were always the jealous tougher than steel types.

But you know what I’ve learned in my 50 years on this planet?

Smile at em…grin…laugh…it’ll piss then off more than a kick to the stomach or spit in their face.

It’s something they will have to have on their conscience for life, not YOU!

You did nothing wrong! NOTHING!

In my life oh my God, I could and should, write a book on the subject on being bullied.

From my days with older kids in my hometown, holding me against the driveway and getting the little kid to pound my head into the pavement to having a former radio guy threaten me with much violence.

Guess how I reacted, I forgave them friends. I carried on and it built character in me. It made me realize time and time again, we can’t change these guys, we can only get stronger becasue of them.

A word to young people…. you can make it through all the layers of crap… there are people that can help…always to hear you out. DO not be scared and frightened away. You have got every right to be happy and stay that way for the rest of your life.

Wear pink today and if you’re like me you’ll wear pink for this cause EVERY DAY!

Plus it looks great on you I must say!

Oh and I will continue to excel in my life’s work. I will always sing and play music, because it can bring joy to others as well as me.

I will hang my Lasalle concert Band uniform proudly even though you may laugh that is canary yellow..

I will continue to smile right in the face of the bully, because others will smile right there with me!

You can smile too! I see you doing it right now. Keep it there..do it often…Life is too short to let them zap the good life you lead right out of you!

I thank you for letting me rant. You should rant too. Tell someone if this is going on and get it stopped!

If it’s a colour you wear that helps, then I hope it leads to awareness and action!

Nascar..oh what a night NOT!!!!

February 28th, 2012 by jeff.mcneice

Wow , is it over yet? Can I turn off the set. I couldn’t and thus I am dead man jocking this morning. I have PVR at the McNeice Ranch ..Did I set it and forget it? Ah, no that would have made sense wouldn’t it? NO I flipped from the Race to , The Bachelor, to the VOICE and it was all quite comical to see me as I usually leave the channel surfing to Lyd, Booners and Jeffrey!

Here it was a weeknight and I was as fully involved in the race as Juan and the Jetdryer were in the huge flames. Thankfully noone was seriously injured. There were heavenly rains that postponed the Daytona event for more than a day and the drivers were fired up and ready to wreck…off the first lap..There goes Jimmy Johnson..opps he bumps Danca Patrick and she ends jup in the garage, but manages to get basically an entire new back end to the race car.. Yes, I know what your’e thinkin’ folks…Danica needs no rear adjustments. I love thaqt she can cuss with the best of em…Jussayin…looking forward to Arizona on the weekend.

Then the McNeice Ranch dwellers hit the road to Disney next Friday!

Kids, Lyd and me are all cranked to get south and get sun..and see Potter..I had to re-finance the Ranch for the tickets though. This will surely be a one-timer…till I collect some more scoots anyway!

Nice and sunny so I think I will go retreive some now afore a big snow may hit tomorrow..so they say

Oscar winner at 82 ! Way to go Christopher Plummer!

February 27th, 2012 by jeff.mcneice

Well friends it’s snowing…some accumulation is expected today ( Monday ) anlong with gusting winds..and they are doing just that folks! Blowing..watch for the slushy conditions to tighten up as our temp drops to -11 overnight.

Loved the fact that 82 year old Christopher Plummer won the award lastnight at the Oscars for best supporting actor. He is just two years shy of the Oscar itself as it is celebrating 84 years.

Good for Meryl Steep winning best actor for’ The Iron Lady’ too.. She had two prior victories of Academy wins to her credit but wanted to snap a dozen losses. So she did it!

At my last check for the Daytona 500 sheduled to start at noon today, earlier indications were calling for T-Storms and an 80 percent chance of rain. Let’s hope if it happens for the racers and fans,it’s over quickly..and they can ‘git er done!’

Excited at the McNeice Ranch as the anticipation of a Disney vacation looms brightly.. 11 more sleeps and we’re headed for Potter at Universal and the Magic Kingdowm. Boy oh boy folks, back in the stone age, in the mid-70′s went I went to Disney, it was a flat rate and you got in to see everything they had to offer. Not so much now…it’s very pricey and you will want to save, save, save before you have to spend, spend, spend.

Well worth it though tto see the smiles of delight on my wife Lyd’s face as well as Sarah and Kate and young Jeffrey jr.

Goofy get ready get set, it’s almost time to pack em into the car and head south for March break.

Do you have plans this coming break?

Hey don’t forget we lose an hour sleep on the 11th Sunday with the start of Daylight Savings Time..but we gain much needed sunlight.

Spring is officially here whethere the groundhogs were predicting it or not on March 20th.

I can’t wait!!!

Some great little voices and music was heard Saturday night at the Great Northern Opry event at the Riuniti Hall.

I got to say a few words and welcome the crowd and sing a couple tunes with my friend Mike Case. His Junior all stars shined almost as brightly as the smile on Mike’s face. Nice to see all the young folks keeping country music alive and well in 2012. There is a renewed passion for our country format. We are riding a wave..a big one and I’m proud to be part of the country scene both here in the Soo and on the air as well.

It was sure nice to see the elders too. Evenlyn and Ray Richards looked great. He’s got to be 94 by now. Evelyn in her mid 80s was all decked out in her country attire and looking like she just walked onto the Academy Awards red-carpet occasion .

See you in the driveway folks…Looks like more snow is falling this hour and won’t be stopping anytime soon..

Bugg off! LOL

February 21st, 2012 by jeff.mcneice

Well hey friends, been awhile since my last post…but I was being ‘bugged’ big time by the flu and it nabbed all the Mcneice Ranch Family members at one time or another. Hey , it’s always easier as a parent when only one of the two of you get the bugg, but it hit Lyd and me virtually at the same time and that was wicked. Both down for the count..keeping nothing down…no energy. It’s been about two weeks and we’re still dragging our asses as it hits Sarah, my teacher daughter.

Sunshine Abounds!

February 9th, 2012 by jeff.mcneice

Nice to see the sun for a second beautiful mild winter day isn’t it folks?

Our high will turn to -11 overnite from our current ZERO..and remain there thru tomorrow..

We sure haven’t had the snow this year yet have we?

I was skating on the inground McNeice Ranch pool this time last year and the skating surface was right at the top of the liner. Today it is 6 feet down to the ice level. I could skate down there, but you’d have to come retreive me with the fire department and rescue squad with a long rope and a warm drink.

Hope you are loving the conditions.

If you are an outdoor winter sports enthusiast and love to ride your sled across the trails..please use caution with exposed rocks due to the lack of snow and the up and down temperatures playing with ice levels on area waterways, we want you to play and ride safely.

Snowarama is a go, the trails used for this Saturday’s ride are in good conidtion for the most part..so call , make some pledges for the Easter Seal kids and take the family out for a day of fun. There will be prizes, breakfast, lunch and a gas-top-up as well for you! Visit www.snowarama.org for details!

Get set for Gord Bamford March 26th at the KCTC..Vist www.qcountry.ca for ticket information and enter for your chance to win tickets in a Q draw. Hey Romeo opens for Gord.

He’s had some great songs already charting like ‘My Little Guy, ‘My daughter’s Father’, ‘Hank Williams Lonesome’ and many more. His new single is ‘Is it Friday yet”/ which is also the name of his cross Canada tour, including not only a stop here, but stops in North Bay and Sudbury as well as other centers.

Brad Paisley pretty much tweeted a boo boo with Sir Paul McCartney in mind. He said Sir Paul should rename his new cd..Said it’s probably the worst album name of the year, hands down. and then went further to say, perhaps in history.

I researched the title since I love Paul and the Beatles and found that the album’s title is a direct line from an old standard tune.. Kisses on the bottom…

Really makes you think’ ya otta investigate afore ya hit your tweet send button.’

That’s just my take.

Beware the intestinal bug..It zapped Jeffrey jr the other day and has now hit Mamma Lyd. It’s a doozey, so keep the handy CLOROX wipes in stoch and wash often. Sowehow I think the odds are stacked against me staying away from this one. Keep hydrated and munch on big Vitamin “C” as well.

Well off to data entry some work stuff..

I’ll chat with you tomorrow…as long as the ‘nasty’ stays out of my gut..Cheers and here’s hoping you stay healthy as many of us prepare to hit the road and the air for holidays very shortly. I hope the bugs have ‘bugged off’ by the March Break eh?

A few of my favourite things!

February 6th, 2012 by jeff.mcneice

Here I sit chatting to you and it’s already the day after Superbowl 46..with the outcome I amd my family were hoping for..We were ready with lots of great food and Jeffrey and I painted big signs and Tshirts and our faces in honour of the New York Giants…21-17 winners over Tom Brady and the Pats. It sure was a nial-biter right down to the last five seconds of the 4th quarter, when Brady attempted to lift the ball half way down field to the goal posts for an attempted touchdown. It was not to be.

What did you think of Madonna? That is the burning question this morning.

I find she should really try to sing live and not lyp sync. Although it is a tough venue with screaming fans and so much going on. Let alone, technical issues that would cripple the performance if a microphone or battery pack failed.

At 53 she still has her fans. She does great work abroard. But she is so arrogant.

When quiestioned on ticket prices to her shows just last week, she says, ‘They can save their money and pay what I ask, I’m worth it!’ WTH! Seriously, they need to go with a huge name in our country music genre to bring gals like her back down to Earth.

Put Rascal Flatts up there with fantastic vocals and upbeat new stuff.

Had a fantastic time playing the classics up at the Legion on Great Northern Road with fellow Great Northern Opry inductees Mike Case, Rob Wagner, Jack Bringleson and Kelly Jackson.

The crowd was dancing right frmo the beginning and barely ever sat down. It was awesome to jam with the boys and you can do it all over again this Saturday night at 8 with Roy Brockelbank and company!

Call Dave Patterson for tickets to the upcoming show and dance at the Riuniti Hall later this month at 705-257-9650..

Canada’s Got Talent is set to kick off in early March. Find out what’s up at the website at www.canadasgottalent.com and enjoy the show!

Snowarama for Easter Selas is a go as Paul Kwolek let me in on in studio this morning. Collect pledges and enjoy a whole day of snowmobiling fun with the family! Prizes up for grabs too.. Find out more at www.qcountry.ca

and at www.snowarama.org Proudly sponsored bt Todays Country Q104! It all runs Saturday !

Got really clean cars and we expect a peak at the sun….

Lots of folks commenting on the Great Country Oldies show Saturday night. Got the Big Hank sr. up on my show this Sunday after 9am.. Thanks for all your positive vibes.
