So now the Government wants to look at a new tune for O Canada. Yesterday’s Throne Speech included a proposal to re-examine the lyrics of the national anthem including the reference to “all thy sons command”. They promised to “examine the original gender-neutral English wording of the national anthem.”

An alternative would be using part of the original 1908 poem on which the lyrics were based. It refers to “true patriot love thou dost in us command.”

What do you think? Is changing the present lyrics to ensure ”gender-neutrality” a good idea? Is this more un-needed political correctness? Is this the first step into eventually removing “God” from the national anthem?

All your thoughts are welcome!

I think it’s BS. This is the first step into removing ‘God’ from our anthem so we don’t offend any ‘newcomers’ who don’t share the tradional Canadian way of life. Worst part is, we have no choice! I’m getting so sick of all this PC…where is our country going?

I agree with Mrs. A. This is total B.S! WTF? Freakin Immagrints have to get used to it for god sake. Harper should say: “Hey, ya uh either learn all of our heritage and get used to our national athnem cause we’re Canada, or get the hell out of our country,” If you agree, then say “EH!!”

If they remomove “God” from our national anthem, will they decide to not only have lines in French, but also have to change lines to Italian, German, Croation, Russian, etc. Like how many languages do we need to make this anthem compatible with????

Almost forgot! How long before we have to change the word Canada to country of multi nations or country of Political Correctness??? In Mohawk …Canada means ” I don’t know!”

I think it’s a positive step in the right direction that they are taking the time to examine this issue and I’m pleased to hear that the gender-neutral lyrics are actually rooted in the original poem! Language is a powerful thing and we often don’t stop to think about the misogyny that lies within it. I don’t feel this has anything to do with God and religion; that’s a separate issue that they could choose to examine as well.

Just going to put my 2 cents worth in here..I’m female and I don’t feel offended at all by the line “In all thy sons command”. I feel it shouldn’t be changed at all and am PROUD to sing/hear that line!! I agree with Mrs. A, Linda and Alli on this one. If the government changes our national anthem, it means that they will change ANYTHING else that is CANADIAN just because there are some groups who are unhappy with it. LEAVE OUR ANTHEM ALONE!!
