Hey gang, sorry it’s been so long! To be honest, we’ve had tons of technical issues with this site, and I find this blog software to be extremely non user friendly. I’ve actually been blogging to an old site that is not even active any longer! So, until we get a change to upgrade, you’ll find most of the “fun stuff” we do on our Facebook page! Christmas In March???

March 11th, 2011 by Jay

beethoven-saves-christmas.jpg

Kerri noticed yesterday that Christmas decorations were going up along Corydon yesterday. That’s right, they weren’t coming down, they were going UP! Have we seriously started thinking about that holly jolly holiday already??? Thankfully, no.

Turns out the crew from the movie “Beethoven Saves Christmas” are filming a parade scene starting at 6pm today. The day will actually include a bunch of floats on loan from our Santa Claus Parade! People are encouraged to come down to the area – specifically between Hugo and Cockburn to help the cast and crew get into the festive season.

Businesses are still open, however you’ll have a hard time finding parking along the street until they wrap up filming tomorrow afternoon.

Do You Tweet?

If so, maybe keep workplace references down to a minimum…

TOP 10 TWEETS TO GET YOU FIRED

Your love of Twitter could get you fired if you’re not careful. Paul Wilson, a freelance/corporate web marketer and blogger, found several of these tweets and posted them as “Top 10 Tweets to Get You Fired.” (All of the following are presented here exactly as they were written on Twitter, except for the expletives):

1. “hate my job!! i want to tell my bosses how dumb they are and how meaningless this job is, then quit, and be happy!”
2. “So my job was to test all the food at the new resturant, can I just say, ughew. I’m going to taco bell then twistee treat.”
3. “Workin… This job sucks worse then the economy!”
4. “I’m going to work! Walmart! Must find better job! I hate it when chicks there have a deeper voice than me and refer to me as foo!”
5. “Also I’m really bummed that I’m working today, i asked off so i could study but my boss is a (blankety blank blank) who can’t read.”
6. “Co-worker smuggled out a chair for me. Currently being paid to sit around and listen to John Barrowman on my iPod. I don’t hate my job today!”
7. “having sex dreams of people you work with makes for an awkward day.”
8. “smoking weed at work is so (blanking) great :)”
9. “It’s bad when you overhear the n00b programmer say “I used to work at McDonalds with him” and you wonder if he is talking about the CEO…”
10. “Huh, with my boss on twitter, maaaybe I should take down that sexy picture of her… but her reaction will be priceless!”

Want a Better Relationship?

January 14th, 2011 by Jay

Is one of your New Year’s Resolutions to improve your relationship? Here are some great ideas!

  1. Set a monthly “date night” and stick to it — Even if it’s just dinner and a movie or a candlelit dinner together at home, make time for just the two of you.
  2. Say “I love you” every day — These three small words carry so much meaning, yet they’re never said often enough. Make sure that your partner knows you love and appreciate him or her every single day.
  3. Put your love in writing — Nothing gives you warm fuzzies of love like receiving a simple love note or a passionate love letter. Every once in a while take the time to write your sweetie love notes, love poems and love letters.
  4. Bring back the spontaneity in your relationship — Surprise your partner once a month. Try sending her flowers “just because.” Buy him two tickets to a game of his favorite sport–and go with him!
  5. Get away from it all with a weekend getaway — Take a romantic weekend away for no reason except to be together. Head to a cabin in the mountains, a local bed and breakfast or a relaxing spa. It doesn’t really matter where you go, as long as you go together and leave the interruptions behind.
  6. Show your love each and every day — Give your partner compliments, hold hands, open doors and engage in public displays of affection. It’s the little things you do to show your love that always mean the most.
  7. Shake up your romantic life with a little creativity — Create your own love coupon book with one coupon for your partner to redeem each week of the year. Easy to create, these little coupons can be as romantic, sexy or practical as you want. Hint: a mix of all three works best.
  8. Have fun together — Take up a new hobby together. Join a softball team together or take cooking, golf or dancing lessons. You’ll not only learn something new, but also you’ll have fun with your partner at the same time.
  9. Don’t forget the little things — Make him lunch. Paint her toenails. Wash and wax his car. Do her weekly chores. You’ve heard the phrase that it’s the little things that really matter when it comes to showing how much you care. Show you care by doing something nice and unexpected for your partner. It’s a practical way to show your love that will be very much appreciated.
  10. Get to know your partner better — Whether you’re dating, just married or celebrating your 25th wedding anniversary, there is always more to learn about your partner. Get creative! Buy the book “All About Us” by Philipp Keel. It’s filled with questions that will help you document your own love story; set aside time to answer one question each week. Or check out the many other books and resources which feature questions designed to spark discussions that will help you learn more about one another.

I’M DREAMING OF A GREEN CHRISTMAS

December 9th, 2010 by Jay

This year, instead of wishing for a white Christmas, think green instead. An environmentally friendly holiday can be just as festive. Here are 15 ways to do just that.

1. Trade in those incandescent lights for LEDs, which use a fraction of the energy.
2. Look for recycled content in wrapping paper. This can be difficult to find and may actually require online ordering, but expressing demand will help drive its availability.
3. Recycle your own wrapping paper, boxes and plastic packaging.
4. Scale back the elaborate outdoor displays. You can be festive without being Times Square.
5. If you do use outdoor light displays, use a timer so the lights are on display only at times when there is an audience.
6. Give your cookies away on a real plate or recyclable plate. Likewise, if you’re hosting a party, either bite the bullet and actually do all those dishes or use recyclable ones.
7. Take the time in your holiday party aftermath to sort through all the cans and bottles that can be recycled.
8. Make good use of your green bin and/or compost bin this holiday season. Uneaten food from holiday dinners and parties can go in there, as can scraps from meal preparation, soiled napkins and paper food packaging, coffee grounds and tea bags, paper plates and your great aunt’s famous fruitcake.
9. Consider asking those with whom you exchange gifts to make a charitable donation in your name. There is no packaging involved. Consider food banks and shelters or organizations that purchase animals or supplies for families in developing countries. For a truly green Christmas, your contribution could go toward environmental conservation.
10. When gift giving, try an experience present, such as tickets to a show or a night at a hotel. It’s something personal that isn’t loaded up with all that packaging.
11. Buy sustainable. Many stores offer fair-trade products.
12. Real trees are great, but consider artificial. If buying a real tree, look for trees that are grown locally. Many are shipped from a great distance consuming fuel to bring them to local Christmas tree lots.
13. Take reusable bags with you when you go Christmas shopping. Don’t let all that extra shopping generate extra plastic.
14. Save your money, save the environment and spare yourself from long hours of looking for the proper gift items at the mall. Start a trend: show you care with some thoughtful homemade gifts. Local, organic, nutritious food items fresh out of your kitchen can work very well.
15. When practicing your out-with-the-old, in-with-the-new New Year routine, don’t just throw out old toys, clothes, shoes and household items. All these items can be donated to organizations that support people less fortunate.

Goodbye Billie Jo

December 2nd, 2010 by Jay

Some big news was announced on our show this morning; Billie Jo is leaving Winnipeg and 102.3 Clear FM. This is a tough one for me, as the two of us have been together for the better part of a decade between our show here and in Saskatoon.

I’m not good at sharing emotions, or showing my vulnerable side, but I will say that at one time, I honestly thought the two of us would be together for the rest of our lives. Our chemistry, both on and off air, was something rare and special. We were the best of friends, sharing our lives together both in and out of the public eye. There was no person I wanted more in my corner, no other person I felt completely comfortable and myself with. When you do a morning show together and sit in a tiny room only feet apart from each other day in and day out for that many years, you form a special bond that few people will ever achieve, let alone understand. Billie Jo was my life, my world.

Sometimes, life doesn’t work out the way you planned. Like they say, “the only constant is change.” Billie Jo is off to Calgary to be a part of our ‘sister station’ Lite 96. This is such an amazing opportunity for her – one that I decided wasn’t for me at this stage in my life. As hard as it is to say goodbye, I’ve been telling myself that everything happens for a reason. Perhaps it’s time for us to find our own way, to find ourselves again. I’ve joked that for so many years my last name has been “and Billie Jo!”

I don’t know what the future holds, but I do know that she’s in good hands in Calgary. I’ve worked in that building, I’ve worked with those people. It’s home for me, and now it’s about to become home for Billie Jo. She will be greatly missed here, but I know she will be welcomed there with open arms.

So, goodbye my friend, my cohost, my partner. It’s been an amazing journey and I can’t imagine taking the ride with anyone else.

Yesterday Kerri and I kicked off our Toy Mountain at Scotiabank Polo Park with the wonderful Scotiabank staff and the Salvation Army. Please remember to drop off a new unwrapped toy at any Scotiabank or Firehall in the city and let’s make sure every child gets a toy under the tree this year!
