Goodbye 2009…..

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

Yikes, it’s the end of another year and the end of a decade.

Well, Sunday morning on THE HIGH SCHOOL SHOW, we will try pick out some of the catchy stories of the past year. Not enough time to go through every championship, but there were some great performances and some issues - even in school sports - that caused havoc and lots of opinion.

For instance, some people didn’t like my opinions that the Rogers Centre was near empty for the recent series of football Bowl games. The truth: it was near empty. Organizers claim over 4,000 people showed up. Not all at one time, they`re adding the numbers of five games and maybe the cheerleaders and marching band too to make the numbers look good. Either way, four teams from the Golden Horseshoe and Metro area combined and that’s all they can draw?

I’m getting off topic. On Sunday, we’ll talk with a former high school basketball player - and now a prominent Toronto lawyer - about school sports. Do we need them, the future and what changes would he make - if he could?

And later this month, a Principal in Toronto retires. But not just any Principal. Close to 40 years as an educator, coach and more. Looking back at thing that stand out - and looking ahead.

Oh yes, we’re on vacation for a few weeks. No shows on December 20 or 27.

We’ll kick-start 2010 with a dandy and a one hour special program- “religion and sport - in high schools“. Two members of the clergy in studio with me.

Female Athletes - The Talk of The Show

Alright, the gals got to me.

On the UNIVERSITY SHOW, Heather Bansley from the University of Toronto convinced me to come out and watch her play volleyball. She’s a three-time Ontario all-star in the indoor game and, I am told, may be even better playing beach volleyball.

We never did get the truckloads of sand delivered to the studio or I could have watched and worked at the same time.

Sports info officer Mary Beth Challoner, from the U of T, accompanied her to the station - and they beat up on the ‘ole guy. All this gender equity stuff, and to top it off the male guest - from York University - didn’t even stick to his arranged guest appearance. So much for hockey and York.

So, more women.

Then, on the HIGH SCHOOL SHOW, Leaside hockey player Emily Rose Galliani Pecchia - she had five of the six goals scored by her team in its league opener - spokje up about girls getting more ice time in T.O.

And what a show put on by Ryan Dixon - on the field with six touchdowns and 471 yards rushing for Donald Wilson of Whitby in the Ontario Junior football final (yes they won 40-28 over St. Michael’s of Toronto). But, this 15-year old spoke like a university student in sharing his observations of a year he’ll remember - and how he’s going to treat his offensive lineman. That’ll cost him a few bucks. Go easy guys, he doesn’t have a fulltime job.

George Mason, no relation to TV’s Perry Mason, talked about his new school - St. Michael’s and playing basketball. He’s from Orillia and played at Park Street until he decided he wanted to finish his education and play hoops for the private school in the big city.
