SUNDAY ON THE HIGH SCHOOL SHOW

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Promise, nothing about the night before - Halloween.

Then again, I like this time of the year because it gives me a reason to get rid of last year’s candies. I will try stick to some interesting guests, like we do each week.

However, this show could stir up some late witches and goblins. Those really weren’t the words I had planned to use.

What’s it like playing basketball and football with one hand?

So, guys and gals, stop complaining. My hat is off to our guest, a teenager, who had a birth defect and chose to make the best of his life - and plays sports better than teenagers whining with two hands.

And, basketball - when is a season too long in high schools?

Girls play three months, if they’re lucky. Boys, well they’ve started tournaments now in October and the provincial playoffs are in march. Good at math?

And we have lots more including a lack of understanding on the part of some players and coaches about H1N1 and my visit to a Mississauga high school class to talk about this profession. Oh yeah.

Sunday at 9:30am, following the University Sports Report.

Yes, Elvis - On The High School Show

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

Strange days in the high school world.

Seems that teams can forfeit games whenever they feel like it, and some leagues don’t even have any sanctions. Then, there’s also the blow-out scores - my favorite beef in the school game - where learning is supposed to be part of the development process.

And how can we forget the on-going fall-out from the embarrassment at Chaminade College when a few football players - with others on the team well aware of what was happening - choosing to experiment with putting feces in a microwave oven. Yes, sadly, worth repeating.

To change pace, this Sunday on the HIGH SCHOOL SHOW at 9:30am, we’re going to do something never done since this program started 17 years ago.

We’re going to talk with Elvis. Yes, Elvis.

I know, “you’re all shook up”. Here’s the deal, you’re welcome to wear your “blue suede shoes” and “shake, rattle and roll”, some of the famous songs of the legendary King of Rock, but - if you do start singing - make sure it’s not in a public place.

Actually, it’s Elvis Thomas - the former National team and professional soccer player who’ll be on the show to talk about coaching at the school he once attended. We have a great story on volleyball - an undefeated team that doesn’t even have a home gym. And, what’s it like scoring five touchdowns in a game.

Sunday at 9:30am on THE FAN 590.

Smelly Story Has To Be Aired

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

Wow, did we hit a nerve.

Judging from all the e-mails and voice mails, lots of people are angry - and even some at me.

Here’s the story. On the show this morning, we made reference to two football players from Chaminade College in Toronto putting feces in a microwave, then pushing a button It all happened, as a prank, while staying in a hotel during a recent trip to Michigan for an exhibition game.

It’s true. So, many - and I mean many - people are furious that the school did not punish the players with a suspension and/or dismissal from the football team. Some thought I was picking on a Catholic school on Sunday morning. Really? A few listeners wanted to know why we didn’t mention the names of the student and/or why we didn’t have their parents on the show. As if these kids and parents, already embarrassed enough, would even come on to explain the mischievous behaviour.

And then, there were several people who objected vehemently to us even mentioning this item. Yup, we got blamed for telling the truth. Didn’t realize that putting this kind of stuff in a microwave was normal practice - and that we are at fault for making this absurd (for lack of a better word) story public.

Swallow it, folks. And I mean the story.

A Tale of Three - Athletes

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Getting close to the midway point of the Fall season for high school sports in the Greater Toronto Area and, well, what’s on the mind of athletes?

Is it school, maybe sports, how about jobs, the future, family pressures, friends, could it be H1N1 or something else?

Three teenage athletes share their priorities with us this Sunday morning at 9:30 on the Thanksgiving Weekend edition of the HIGH SCHOOL SHOW.

Alright, we’ll also talk some football with a player whose team refuses to lose this year. And, with the provincial finals coming up in golf, a remarkable story of determination. Also, some volleyball with a report from one of the top players in Peel Region who is competing with his team in a tournament in Newfoundland.
