Football Players Speak Out

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

Three high school football players - and all with interesting stories - tell it the way they see it on THE HIGH SCHOOL SHOW on Sunday morning at 9:30am.

Raul Thompson, from Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Mississauga, is a running back that may just be among the best in the Greater Toronto Area. Derek Wiggan is an outstanding defensive lineman with the three-time defending Metro Bowl champs at St. Michael’s in Toronto and Winston Miles plays on the defensive line for Forest Hill - a team that won a divisional title last year.

All three plan to play university football and just might have what it takes to play at the pro level.

Alright, school is back. Time for sports too - and lots of physical activity. So, what is being done to limit the risk of serious injury?

Reports show that an estimated 1.4 million high school sports injuries lead to 500,000 doctors visits and 30,000 hospitalizations annually. And there’s another tragic school sports story about a college player in Louisiana who died after he became ill at practice.

This Sunday morning, yes Sept. 13th at 9:30, THE HIGH SCHOOL SHOW will examine injuries in sports with Toronto’s Dr. Michael Clarfield and Jeffrey Kroll, a Chicago personal injury lawyer who has represented students with school sports injuries.

Let’s talk some football

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

School starts in a few days and if you believe teenage football players haven’t been working out and planning for practices - think again.

A late start to the school year also means a squished season for many leagues in the Greater Toronto Area as Bowl games are set for late November - and, likely, at the Rogers Centre.

This Sunday AT 9:30 A.M. on THE HIGH SCHOOL SHOW, we’ll talk football with three guys - and each looking at the game from a slightly different perspective.

One will be a coach who is also a teacher and the publisher of a football magazine. Then, how does the Ontario Varsity Football League impact on players prepping for the school season? A coach and former Canadian Football league player will talk about it.  And a Durham Region team, expected to do well in its league this year, is in Ohio for a pre-season game. We’ll find out how they did and more.
