New Toronto School Board Director Talks Sports

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Chris Spence will take over as the new Director of the Toronto District School Board on July 2 - and what a breath of fresh air.

Yes, he’s a jock. Played sports in high school. Played in the Canadian Football League. Yes, he also shows up at school sports events too. And where does he put the value of a bonafide school sports program on his list>

Tune in to the HIGH SCHOOL SHOW on Sunday, March 1st at 9:30am on THE FAN 590 and you’ll hear the answer, and more, from him.

Also, Jonathan Tull, finishing off his final year of high school at Pickering High, is also a basketball player. So, what’s it like when your team - a two-time defending Ontario basketball champ - gets booted out of competing for a possible three-peat. Then, after a massive community uproar, the team gets re-instated. Education in sport. He’ll also be on the show to talk about what has transpired on and off the basketball court.

And coach Roy Rana, his Eastern Commerce senior boys’ basketball team is the first Toronto school to clinch a spot in the provincial Quad-A playoffs coming up in Windsor. Can Eastern Commerce, with a handful of championships, do it again?

Tune in.

Something Is Not Right

Can’t figure it out.

The Lake Ontario Secondary Schools Association must have different rules for different people.

The Pickering High basketball saga continues. The defending Ontario high school senior boys’ basketball team, unbeaten in league play, now has to contend with its head coach suspended for the duration of the seaon and playoffs - pending the results of an appeal.

Yes, Mike Gordensky broke a rule. He admits to the mistake. He used two Pickering players, ineligible in the Durham Region league, at a tournament in South Carolina - to help them attract university/college interest. His decision did not affect the LOSSA league. But, he did admit to making an error.

Here’s the confusion?

And I won’t dwell on the three-member LOSSA review panel, having a possible conflict of interest with one of those people - another basketball coach - involved in determining guilty or not guilty.

Why did LOSSA not suspend the volleyball coach at Clarington Central who used an ineligible player, knowingly, in a league game? Yes, a league game. No penalty. Case closed. Move on for that one.

I am not alone, based on a rash of e-mails, wondering why LOSSA - based on sports and schools - apparently has a different interpretation for violating its own Constitution?
