Lots to Talk About

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

I’m back from Bereavement Leave. My mother passed away last week and, well, we all have had a mother in our life - and they truly are remarkable people. Mine was exceptional and I miss her dearly. Thank you for all the e-mails, cards and charitable donations. Very much appreciated.

Have to say thanks to a great professional group - Zack Cooper, for filling in, Ken Rodney for the exceptional work in packaging a show of some of the better interviews from past. Joel McFayden and Joseph Cecilia, producer and technical whiz repectively each week, for the script and making sure it all sounded perfect. Professionals all the way. And to Nelson Millman, Doug Ferraway and Ian Cunningham for their leadership - no wonder these guys are the best of the best.

Well, hope you caught the show today? If not, a few interviews are on the FAN audio website. The University Show had womens basketball and volleyball. Top basketball player at U of T (first place team) and top volleyball player at York (only undefeated team in Ontario). Then, the High School Show with 6-10, 250-pound Maurice Walker, from Mother Teresa - here’s a player. Great senior boys’ basketball tournament set for St. Catharines next month - the Ontario Catholic Classic. And, Brent MacKay, back coaching hockey, spoke about his team at Upper Canada College and their sparkling new hockey facility.

So, what do you think of a high school girls’ basketball game in Texas. If you missed it, the final score: 100-0?

We had a girls’ game in York Region last Fall, a team was shutout and the school principal flipped when I mentioned it. It happened, and in a public facility too. But, we’re not supposed to report games that do not reflect positively. She said parents were irate, teachers upset, players too. Funny, I never heard from anyone but the principal.

I see, maybe detention time for me - for telling the truth. I wonder why the folks at Stephen Lewis Secondary in Richmond Hill, the school that couldn’t score a point in a senior girls’ basketball game, hasn’t contacted me since - and for any sport?

Maybe the principal and York Region sports folks need to review what happened. How about asking the winning team why they wouldn’t allow the opposing team to score? Time for administrators and coaches to wake up and do more than just complain. There’s lots to brag about when it comes to student performances in sports. How about the efforts too - from kids who do their best while tecahers and coaches can’t find a few minutes to promote their accomplishments?

I can sense another detention coming up.

You’ve likely heard the conversations, and arguments, about what makes up the best high school senior basketball team in the Greater Toronto Area.

And, who could be the best player?

Some people think offence is better than defence. Others point to contribution to the team - win or lose. Still, debates linger about other related items.

And, does playing against U.S. teams make a Toront0-area team better than against Canadian teams?

These, and more, this Sunday - January 4th - as the HIGH SCHOOL SHOW on the FAN 590 talks basketball and more basketball. Yes, with three guys who coach and know the sport.

Happy New Year!
