A month ago we posted this blog with a picture of what appeared to be Backbreaker, an Xbox360 and PS3 game that is rumored to be launching in late September, on the iPhone.
Well today we finally figured out that mystery when NaturalMotion, the studio behind Backbreaker, announced that they’ve partnered with mobile development veterans, Ideaworks3D, to make a game for the iPhone/iTouch called Backbreaker Football: Tackle Alley.

This mobile version of the game is said to be inspired by a mini-game that could be found in the console version of Backbreaker, and focuses completely on grabbing the ball and running up field to see how far you can get before someone tackles you. According to NaturalMotion players will use the tilt and touch functions of the iPhone/iTouch to, “sprint, dodge and spin past waves of oncoming defenders, racking up point combos and score multipliers on their way to the end zone”.
On top of that, NaturalMotion is planning on using Morpheme, a animation engine that they call “graphically authorable,” to make this one of the best moving and looking games you’ll find on the iPhone/iTouch. According to NaturalMotion, using Morpheme in this game will allow players to experience a, “fluidity of motion rivaling that experienced on home consoles.”

However, with NaturalMotion’s main focus being the development and selling of game engines to other game and movie development companies, no one knows exactly how well a NaturalMotion football game will be. Only time can truly answer that question, but everything we’ve seen so far looks good.

One way or the other it will not be long until we know how good Backbreaker Football: Tackle Alley is as it will be available for purchase on the iTunes App Store this fall; and if you want you can get the trailer for this game right now. You’ll find it below this paragraph.
