This is a day that we’ve known would be coming for a while, and even with all the evidence of its existance, it’s hard to believe that this day is really here. Yes, today is the day that Sony Computer Entertainment unveiled their new 120GB PS3 slim.

A lot has been changed for this new model. The black shiney body from the old PS3 has been replaced by a charcoal black finish that barely shines at all. The Slim’s demensions have been reduced. Sony said in their press release that, “(the Slim) is approximately two-thirds smallers than the original”; with the specific dimensions being 290 × 65 × 290 mm (width × height × length). A few internal changes have also been made, and by a few I mean that they’ve completely redesigned the guts of this machine, and in the process a lot of extra features have been changed. The Install Other Operating System feature has been removed completely, so there is now no way to install Lynx or any other operating system on this machine. Also, a BRAVIA® Sync™ feature was added. This allows BRAVIA TV owners to directly operate the PS3′s Xross Media Bar using their TV remotes. And in the press release we recieved today Sony says, “(that they) will modify the PS3 brand name from “PLAYSTATION 3” to “PlayStation 3”, and introduce a new logo, which is engraved on the surface of the new PS3 system.”
Here is that logo.
This smaller system also comes with that price cut we’ve been expecting for a while. This new slimmer system is going to hit stores on September 1st of this year for the lower price of $299 Canadian. On top of that Sony has also decided to cut the price of current PS3 TODAY! If you can’t wait for the slim, then you can grab the 80GB version of the PS3 that is currently on the market for $299 Canadian, and the 160GB model is now priced at $399 Canadian.
And don’t worry, because this new PS3 Slim will play all the Blue-Ray movies that you want. This new system also comes with:
- a single dual shock controller
- the ability to read Blue Ray movies, DVDs and CDs
- a power cord
- a USB cable
- audio video cables
- 2 USB slots
- actual physical power and eject buttons instead of the old touch sensitive ones on the old PS3s
And sold seperately for roughly $24 dollars (press release only listed this price in US dollars) will be a new “Vertical Stand” specifically made for the Slim.
So there you have it. A smaller price for a smaller system, but the big question that still needs to be answered is, will this new package be enough to attract the hordes of games that Sony wants? To be honest, signs point to yes; so how about it? Is this new PS3 enough reason for you to grab one?

I’m personally happy for Sony making this price drop. In fact the timing couldn’t be perfect as Uncharted 2 will be hitting shelves in October. Which should help sell systems. ANd also games like Infamous will rise to the top of the chart.
I already own a PS3, I have a 60GB model (upgraded to 120GB)and it backwards compatable. I’m just happy I have friends will will be picking these systems up shortly. I just hope the silm does not have system issues like the Xbox 360.
Good for Sony and good for consumers
- JushinWould be just my luck Jushin. I finally grab a PS3 and it red rings on me… here’s hoping that doesn’t happen.
- Bryan Calhoun…another beautiful thing about the PS3??
…no rings to reddify…
- Zack CooperOn a completely off-topic Issue, Batman Arkham Asylum has created a bidding war and most major canadian retailers are selling it for $40 on launch day!
a nice break from the 69.99 we’ve had to endure the last half year
- RandyYeah, Randy I just heard that. And judging by the review I read, it looks fantastic. I will pick up for that price point. But seriously I want games to go back to that $59.99 price point.
Callhoun, you better be picking up a PS3 soon and you, Zack and I can play a game online soon.
All the best folks
- Jushinyeah Calhoun… quit buying bad games, and buy the most powerful system.
GOSH!
- Zack CooperIf I don’t buy, play and report back on bad games; then who will? It’s a public service I provide.
I will certainly be getting a PS3 sometime in the next month or so.
- Bryan CalhounTo correct Jushin, we have a 250 GB HDD swapped in. Its also good to note that with the PS3 slim, you can easily swap a HDD upgrade as well. But FCC patent rulings have reviled that Sony is working on a 250GB model as well. Sony doesn’t Red Ring, I can’t believe 360 has a 54% fail rate and people still buy a defective system. People have been begging for PS2 compatibity, but I think Sony will do this via software, and make people repurchase classic PS2 games through the PSN store, not by picking up a used copy at EB. Basically Sony is gearing up a fully digital accessible content rich storefront.
- karmachameleonI for one am thrilled about the PS3 price drop. If you have been listening to the show you know I’ve been debating between picking up a PS3 or Xbox, and now with the price drop this seals the deal for the PS3.
Add in Arkum Asylum being released and sold for a cheaper than expected price and I couldnt be happier.
- MominI’m a self admitted Achievement addict (used in favour of another word) and stopping at 66,000 points and starting over with “trophies” seems pointless….I like the PS3 but it only got play when my 360 was getting fixed….I’m on my 3rd 360 and still love the stupid thing. My PS3 is a great dvd player though…hahaha, I still have infamous, uncharted and Killzone 2 begging to be played…But I dunno, Halo is still as fresh as it was 2 years ago, and with ODST coming out with all the multiplayer maps, it appears I’ll be hooked to the 360 for so much longer. (I own a backup 360 for my inevitable implosion of the one I’m using now…there is something seriously wrong with that notion isn’t there)
