Got Game Show – May 10th

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

First off, this being Mother’s Day, I just wanted to say Happy Mother’s Day to my Mom, and my fellow show hosts asked me to do the same for their mothers. Without them there would be no Got Game. Thanks Moms!

Now down to business. The coolest thing on the internet is now avaliable for you to listen. The icon below this sentence hosts the Got Game Show for Sunday, May 10th from start to finish.  All for your streaming pleasure.

SPOILER ALERT: One of the hosts accidently dropped a spoiler about the upcoming Terminator movie. If you don’t want to have anything about that filmed spoiled for you then move the podcast 2 minutes ahead when you first hear them talking about the Terminator iPhone game.

As always there were to many things for us to cover in such a small amount of time, so here are a few things that got left out of the show, but that we feel you should know about:

  1. A new Beyond Good & Evil game will probably be released in the next 365 days. You may remember this teaser trailer that was released about a year ago. Well, late last week this video was posted to a number of video sharing sites like Youtube. The video appears to be game footage of Jade from Beyond Good & Evil running, jumping, and climbing through some city in a way that really reminds me of Assasin’s Creed. That is probably because both Assasin’s Creed and Beyond Good & Evil are Ubisoft licences, so it would be easy for those game to share resources.  No comments about the new Beyond Good & Evil game have been made by the developers, but I personally am expecting that we will be hearing something about this game at E3 this year.
  2. On Tuesday May 5th Bethesda Softworks released their new downloadable content, the Broken Steel add-on, which extended the ending of the game for another 10 or so hours. On top of it being one of the most detailed add-on ever released on Xbox Live, it was also the most broken, and it was just as quickly removed from the marketplace because it was broken. However, on Friday afternoon Microsoft finally got the problems fixed and now the extra content is: (a) working, and (b) avaliable for download again. So to all my fellow capital wasteland wanderers I say go and get it while you can.
  3. 3D Realms is officially closing its doors, and with them and Take-Two splitting the publishing and approval rights to the game, it looks like Duke Nukem Forever will never be released. Which does suck, but there is one bright spot in all this. Co-publishers Apogee Software and Deep Silver have announced that this closure will not affect their Duke Nukem Trilogy (which is being made for the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP) in anyway.

Also as you know, we’ve been playing the new X-men Origins: Wolverine game here at the FAN590 during the past week. We didn’t mention it in the show but during the past week while playing I found this.

Now, some of you may be cracking up at the sight of this, and others may not get that joke at all. However, if you consider yourself a gamer then the words “the cake is a lie” should mean something to you. For those who don’t know that quote, it is a reference to the game Portal were you spend a large amount of time completing challenges so that you can get a piece of cake at the end.

I will not ruin the cake storyline in Portal for you, but as you can see above, Logan has the chance to find cake too. If he manages to find that cake on the Xbox360 version then you will unlock the cake achievement. Completing the cake achievement will earn you an extra 15 points for your xbox gamer score. Now, I am not going to tell you where it is exactly, but I am not heartless either. If you want that cake then you must explore the Sentinel level heavily.

Finally, lets end this blog off with a couple of videos that I think you may find interesting. Here is the short film that Xbox Canada made during the 1 vs 100 beta launch event here in Toronto. If you look closely you will see Ken, Zack, Momin and I.

The other is the offical 1 vs 100 game trailer.

I can’t wait for this thing to get out of beta. It is pretty fun now, but it is going to be an amazing experience for anyone who tries it when the full thing starts.

We’ve gone iPhone app CRAZY…

Friday, May 8th, 2009

I’m just heading in to work now… but I wanted to give you a quick heads up.

We’ve all gone a bit nutty over the last few days (I’m close to seeking help) at the app store…

SO many BIG titles have just been released.

I’ve spent a fair amount of time playing Top Gun, Need For Speed: Undercover, Tiger Woods 10, and Terminator Salvation.

That’s a fair amount of money for varying degrees of good times.

We’ll break ‘em all down (or as much as we have time to) on Sunday.

…we want to know what you’re playing… let us know, when we take your calls, sometime after go-time, which is 12:30 on Mother’s Day.

So yesterday, the “Got Game” crew had the chance to try to out “1 vs. 100″ in it’s first live airing around the world!  (Sure, Paris, the UK, and some other place got their chance – but not until after we did.)  Bragging rights are big.  As they are in the game as well.  (I was running with top score in the room after the first 35 minutes only to slip after missing out on a couple of Star Wars questions)

You may be familiar  with the popular TV game show which goes by the same name and is hosted by your favourite sweater-neck wearing sailor-speaker (Bob Saget, in case you need a hint), but this is the first time that a mass multiplayer video game has invaded your homes like this.

If you’re not aware of what the show’s all about… the Coles (or Cooper’s, in this case) notes version goes like this:

You’re either:

“The One”

Part of “The Mob”

Part of “The Crowd”

“The One” is the contestant who is trying to out-last everyone else.  There are a few points in the game (I believe after a certain amount of players from “The Mob” get eliminated), in which you can play for The Money or The Mob.  If you’re choosing the money, you’re essentially saying you’ve gone as far as you can go, and don’t want to risk getting a wrong answer.  You’ll walk away with “X” amount of Microsoft points (up to 10,000 if you make it to the end).  In our run-through, each of us had unlocked a free XBox Live Arcade game, as part of The Mob.  Good times.

Get the Flash Player to see this content.

It should be noted that this experience will be FREE for Gold Members.  They’ll “broadcast” live shows  on Friday and Saturday nights of every week (with content obviously updated weekly as well), but if you don’t want to be playing games on your Friday and Saturday evenings, you’ll still be able to play any night with what they’re calling “1 vs 100 Extended Play” featuring themes trivia.

Beta testing for Canada starts up on Friday the 8th, at 10pm EST.

There’s obviously SO much more to get into with this game… and this game will certainly open the doors to many more like it.

We spoke to Jo Clowes, the Director of Game Development, and will air that interview on the show, Sunday May 10th (early start time – 12:30pm – taking your calls!)

…oh, and here’s Calhoun and K-Rod marveling at my score while I try and line-up an interview…

Got Game Show – May 3rd.

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

 Hey guys,

Thank you for listening to the first ever Got Game show. As we promised here is the extended version of the Fight Night Round 4 interview that we had with Jeff Atienzia, Brian Hayes, and Mike Mahar of EA Sports.

Also don’t forget that our next show is going to be LIVE! On Sunday May 10th at 12:30 pm we are going to be taking your calls, and reading your emails on air (email us at gotgame@fan590.com). Also Zack, Ken, Momin and I are going to be getting a sneak peak at the new 1 vs 100 game at some point in the next week. We plan to discuss that game in detail on the 10th. Trust me this game will rock, so you won’t want to miss the next GOT GAME?

You can also keep up with the latest gaming news on the Got Game twitter at GotGame590.

p.s. – Like I said during the show I still do not believe that motion controls are the main reason why people play video games on the Wii. I have always believed that no matter how good your system is (or unique in this case) that it is nothing without a library of games to support it. I want to ask you guys, am I wrong? Do you think people play the Wii simply because of the motion controls?
