Winter or Weight…

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

We blew up the phone lines yesterday when we asked a question during Battle of the Sexes.  “What does the ‘W’ stand for in 10W30 Motor Oil”?

We gave winter as the correct answer and immediately started to receive calls from listeners saying it was actually weight.  So the debate began with listeners calling in with both answers, and Mitch and I took to the phones for your advice…which then launched into a hunt for a reliable source.

Our journey took us on a phone call to the Philippines to Pennzoil, a trip in an elevator (kind of), a call from Al who set us up with a phone number for Imperial oil  and our final, reliable answer …what the ‘W’ actually stands for in 10W30 Motor Oil

A Local Legend honoured this weekend

Monday, September 27th, 2010

It was nice to see a local legend honoured this past weekend.  Hockey Hall of Famer Bill Barber had his number 9 retired by the North Bay Junior A Trappers before their game on Sunday night.  It’s only fitting, seeing as Barber won the Copeland Cup with the Junior Trappers during the 1968-69 season.  Barber also had a new sportsplex named in his honour Saturday in his hometown of Callander.  Bill Barber is now a consultant with the Flyers, the team he won two Stanley cups with in the 1970′s.  Here’s Bill Barber’s stats from his days with the Trappers:

1967-68    34 games played    18 goals     35 assists     53 points      44 pen mins

1968-69   48 games played   32 goals       38 assists    70 points      100 pen mins

Over the years there have been many celebrities to appear on Sesame Street.  Big names like John Candy, Jim Carey, Jack Black, Gene Simmons, Ben Stiller and the list goes on.  Let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to head there?  It’s a pretty cool place where everyone fits in…that is…everyone did until pop singer Katy Perry came along.Sesame Street will not air the video of Katy Perry singing a “cleaned-up” version of her song “Hot N Cold” with Elmo.  Parents started to complain as soon as they saw what she was wearing when the video was released on YouTube.  It was decided that her outfit was too revealing.  Generally, as parents we try to censor what our children watch on TV, we avoid violent shows, excessive nudity, and such.  Do you think her attire was appropriate for a children’s show?  Could this be a case of a few parents overreacting?Check out Katy Perry & Elmo

Just Give’r!

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

It’s the movie that gave us the classic line “Just Give’r” and the guys are back for more.  Chances are if you’re a metal or rock fan you’ve seen the 2002 mockumentary film “Fubar”.  I love it!  In fact I own it, so you can bet I’m looking forward to the sequel as Terry and Deaner are back for more craziness in “Fubar II”.  The new flick opens on October 1st and the plot has the whacked out duo heading to Fort McMurray to make some money in the oil patch.  I have a few buddies who’ve lived that particular scenario and I bet they’ll be lining up to see this movie too!  Check out the trailer below and maybe we’ll see you at the theater.

Happy Anniversary!

I had the chance to head out to the first free pizza zone of the year!  This year marks the 10th anniversary of a terrific program called The Canadian Tire Junior Citizenship Program, rewarding students for their hard work in our community.  We have three year end winners to start things off.  The first was St. Hubert Catholic School for Most Original Project. Ms. Cheryl Nidd’s grade 2/3 class from last year, asked their parents to send treats and items to school for the animals at the Humane Society for Halloween, instead of candy for themselves.  This good deed scored the whole school a pizza lunch last year and was such a great project that they won pizza again for everybody this year, along with a $750 cheque from Canadian Tire for their school.

I had a chat with a young lady named Elsa.  She told me a bit about their project.

Next week it’s off to St. Luke for the highest participation rate.

To have your school recognized for their hard work, talk to your principal and start thinking up ways that your whole school can help out the community.  Good Luck!

Hunting Season is Upon Us

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Hunting season opened in North Bay this past Wednesday.  Here at the Fox we took plenty of calls from hunters excited to get out on the weekend to hunt for ducks and other small game.  Here’s hoping your hunting experience works out better than the guy in the video below!

Click here to see some craziness!

A new show is in the works called “Bridalplasty”.  E! is producing the new show where brides-to-be will compete in wedding-themed challenges to win extensive surgical procedures. Women will compete in challenges like writing wedding vows and planning honeymoons. The winner has the chance to choose a plastic surgery procedure and walks away with a dream wedding where she reveals her new appearance to the guests…and the groom.

Now I can see this going one of two ways.

Either the groom is one lucky guy!  Walking away with not only a revamped bride but a free wedding to boot…

or you’ve seen what happens to some celebrities after plastic surgery (have you seen Meg Ryan or Goldie Hawn lately?) and the groom gets the shaft.  No longer is he marrying the women with the face that he fell in love with.

I think things used to be quite different though.  Some people used to actually marry a person for their personality.  Call me crazy, but if you are going to marry someone, shouldn’t it be because you love them the way they are?
