Happy Halloween!

Friday, October 30th, 2009

With Halloween approaching, you may be looking to take in a scary movie this weekend.  “Saw VI” is out and on the big screen at Galaxy Cinemas in North Bay.  The coolest thing about it is that it has a local connection.  Gerry Mendicino is a local actor who got his start in the drama club at St. Joseph Scollard Hall.  Gerry has appeared in a ton of commercials, as well as movies like “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and “Lucky Number Slevin”.  Gerry plays a janitor who gets tortured and killed in the new Saw movie.  Keep an eye out for our North Bay boy playing the janitor in the new flick.  Click here to hear Gerry talk about his scenes in the movie.

Whatever you’re doing this weekend, all of us at the Fox want to wish you a safe and happy Halloween.

Here’s an extra treat for you if you’re a Fox Rock Star.  Enter the word “Gerry” in the bonus code section here on our website to get 500 Rock Star points.

Halloween for Everyone!

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

It works out perfectly that Halloween falls on a Saturday this year.  Kids have the chance to head out trick or treating and adults can enjoy costumes and parties as well…but what about the pets?  Some people dress up their cats and dogs…I’m not saying they should, especially this guy…check out the attached clip and enter the following bonus code for 500 Rockstar points: vader

The new Distracted Driving Law

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Ontario’s new Distracted Driving Law goes into effect today.  The new law makes it illegal for drivers to use hand held cellphones or other electronic devices while at the wheel.  Vicki and I talked about it on the show this morning and our online poll shows that the majority of our listeners will pull over to the side of the road to use their cellphone.  Some of the people I talked to on the weekend wondered why cellphones are being targeted when other activities like eating while driving, applying make-up while at the wheel and holding a dog on your lap while on the road can be equally distracting.  We also had a few calls from listeners with questions about what the law covers.  Click on this link if you would like to find out more about the new law.  As for me, I’ll pull over to make a call until I pick up a handsfree device later this week.

If you are planning to check out a movie this weekend, take a look at our Fox Movie Face-off at foxradio.ca, under morning show.  This week we watched Transformers 2 and thought we would fill you in…

Is there a movie that you would like us to review?  If so, email us at thefox@foxradio.ca.  Have a great weekend!

Halloween is Nearly Here

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Halloween is nearly here and this year it falls on a Saturday.  You can bet there will be plenty of scrambling in the week ahead to come up with a cool costume for the big night.

If you’re looking for a good party, the Waltonian Inn is once again hosting a big Halloween bash with music by The Dinosaurs.

On Monday morning we’ll be speaking with Value Village Costume Consultant Torina Salcedo and she’ll tell us what’s hot this year and how you can put together a costume for next to nothing.  Check out this cool costume inspired by the Transformers!

Debt Retirement

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Ever wonder what that “debt retirement” charge on your hydro bill is all about?  One of our fox listeners did, and sent in the question to ask Vicki.  Todd Wilcox, Chief Operating Officer at North Bay Hydro quickly got back to us with the information on the original amount of the debt and how much has been paid off.  Check out the attached clip for the full scoop.

If you have a question, we would love to hear from you at 474-2000 ext. RANT, or shoot us an email at thefox@foxradio.ca

I’m a sucker for sports flicks

Monday, October 19th, 2009

When it comes to sports movies I will admit I am hooked.  “Rudy” is one of the finest films ever – a movie that still brings a tear to my eye.  “Hoosiers” is a classic, ”Any Given Sunday” was great, and “Slapshot” is brilliantly funny.  “Remember the Titans”, “Field of Dreams”, “The Bad News Bears”, “Friday Night Lights”, “Bull Durham”, “Rocky”, “Raging Bull”…. I could go on and on with sports movies I could watch over and over again.

Today I bring up “Miracle”, a good movie about the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey gold winning team.  Herb Brooks and his squad beat the heavily favoured Soviet team and became an inspiration to underdogs everywhere with their “Miracle on Ice”.  Kurt Russell plays Coach Brooks in the film, and he obviously inspired this little guy.  Have a look at four-year old Rizzo right here and tell me if this isn’t the cutest thing you’ve seen in a while!

Monday Night

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Monday, Monday…the day many of us enjoy the least.  The beginning of a new week, and now a day to look forward to…with a new season of some great television shows, Monday night is a day to look forward to.

There’s Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory, two very funny shows equals a great way to laugh and wind down the start to another work week.  I hope you enjoy your Monday, have a great week and enjoy the clip!

H1N1

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Some very disturbing news about the H1N1 Flu (also known as Swine flu), a report came out on October 13th stating that 79 Canadians have died from the virus since it was first reported in April.  Today we have reports of a 15 year old Timmins boy that has died from the illness, along with reports that half a dozen people in Timmins have tested positive for the virus.

Canadian Health Officials confirm the swine flu vaccine will be made available the first week of November.  The Chief Public Health Officer says once the vaccine is rolled out the Canadian population should be immunized by Christmas before the virus peaks.

Many people get a regular flu shot this time of year, while some don’t believe it’s necessary.

Will you get the H1N1 flu shot?

Want to Help Make a Difference?

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Anyone who has lived in this community long enough knows how generous the people of North Bay and area are.  There are many fine service groups in our community, and I want to take a moment to tell you about one of them.

I have been a member of the Kin Club of North Bay since 2006 and I am entering my third year as club president.  The local Kin Club has raised money for playgrounds, donated to organizations like the North Bay and Area Food Bank, the North Bay General Hospital Foundation and the Gathering Place, our community soup kitchen among many others.  The Kin Club has also organized drives to raise funds for children with special needs in our community.

I was asked to join in the Fall of 2006 when the membership numbered just four and every day I am inspired by these members who make time in their busy lives to help serve the community’s greatest need.

In this day and age, with everyone busy trying to find a balance between their career and family life it should not come as a surprise that membership in service clubs is down significantly.  I am here to tell you that all it takes is a few hours a month to make a difference in your community.  I am inspired by watching some of the busiest people I know make time to help others, all the while having plenty of fun along the way.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to join a service club?  The Kin Club of North Bay will hold an Information Fun Night on Thursday, October 22nd at West Ferris Legion Branch 599.  The club is open to men and women 18 years of age and older.  If you’d like to join us for an evening of fellowship, dinner and more, just give me a call at 474-2000, extension 233.  I’d be happy to tell you more about our club.

Thanks for reading my blog.  If you’re a Fox Rock Star I’ve included a bonus code worth 500 Rock Star points.  Your code is “kin”.
