The Power of Music

March 13th, 2010 by Mitch

I was at Canadian Music Week in Toronto this past week and had the chance to see the world premiere of a new video called “Wavin’ Flag” by Young Artists for Haiti.  A number of Canadian acts have come together to give their time and efforts to help those affected by the Haiti earthquake.  Sometimes music has the power to move you and affect change.  I think this song will do just that.  Keep an eye out for Sam Roberts, Tyler Connolly from Theory of a Deadman and Tom Cochrane among others.  Watch the video here.

Death Comes To Town…Too Much?

March 4th, 2010 by vicki.tyler

After tuning in to Death Comes To Town last night I was a little grossed out, as it was basically an episode focused on Necrophilia.  Do you feel it was too raunchy for the 9:00 pm timeslot?  Let us know what you thought of the show last night 474-2000 ext. RANT.

We asked your opinion and had a variety of responses

This email comes from Debbie:

EEESh….my partner and I were changing channels and found it so thought we’d watch the last 10 mins looking for Kenny and unfortunately caught the scene in Mattawa and it was my teen who said “ya know we don’t have to watch this if you don’t want” before we could get the channel changed. Have to admit I wasn’t a big fan of the show before but have caught this new show on and off just to see parts of the city cause god knows I can’t follow the plot. But last night was just too weird and off and I think you are right when you mentioned it being on too early. We just looked at each other and shook our heads and turned the channel for good.  Kenny I’m glad you weren’t on either!

Jon Anderson comes to the Bay

March 2nd, 2010 by Mitch

A legend comes to North Bay later this month when Jon Anderson-The Voice of Yes performs at the Capitol Centre on March 27th brought to you by 102 FM The Fox.  I have been a Yes fan since the age of 11 when my father bought me a cassette copy of “Fragile”.  I played that thing until the tape wore out.  When Yes rocked Edmonton’s Northlands Coliseum in the early 80’s on the “90125 Tour” I was there rockin’ the devil’s horns, and when I bought my first compact disc in the early 90’s it was an easy choice, I went back to that childhood favourite, “Fragile”.

You might be able to tell I am just a little bit stoked about the big show later this month.  Want to see the show?  Get your tickets at www.capitolcentre.ca or take our latest Fox Listener Advisor survey and you could win a pair.

Vicki and I had the chance to talk to Jon Anderson recently and you can hear some excerpts from our interview below.

What’s that in your ear?

March 2nd, 2010 by vicki.tyler

It’s Sunday afternoon, almost time for the big gold medal hockey game.  We have our snacks ready; the kids are playing quietly…until my four year old daughter comes in with a red ear.  I take a closer look to inspect, and find that she has jammed a bead in her ear.  Luckily I was able to dislodge it with my nail, but the discussion it has raised about things that young children stick in their nose and ears surprised me.

Since that discussion I have heard everything from an eraser in the nose (Mitch) to peas and even a shell up the nose.  One woman even told me of a seed that was beginning to grow in her child’s nose.  I guess one thing that never changes through the generations is a child’s curiosity.

If you have a story of adventures in digging items out of someone’s nose, we would love to hear it!  Shoot me an email, or call our RANT line at 474-2000 extension RANT.

A Bit of North Bay History

February 26th, 2010 by vicki.tyler

Every now and then we receive a question about the history of North Bay on our Ask Vicki feature, and we head to an outside source to fill us in.  I had a question from Peter regarding a stone structure at the intersection of Highland and Britton here in North Bay.  He wanted to know what it was.  It is basically shaped like a rectangle and formed with large stones.  After a few weeks of searching without luck, I went to Paul Walker, CEO and Chief Librarian at the North Bay Public Library.  Paul was able to dig up a post card that uncovered some clues on the structure in question…  listen here

I have also attached some pictures of the structure and what it may have been.

Disappointing Hockey

February 22nd, 2010 by vicki.tyler

This morning we asked our listeners how they felt about the Canadian Men’s Hockey Team and there seems to be mixed opinions…listen here.  In my opinion, the Canadian Men are trying to be to too elaborate.  We have a team full of all stars, let’s be honest.  They are all capable of incredible performance, and it may be that they are showboating a tad too much.  I mean if they were up by a few goals, fine, but if you can’t back it, stick to the basics.

Quite a few people calling in this morning blaming goalie Martin Brodeur, saying that Roberto Luongo should be in net as it is his play ground.

Could it be that the other teams are as good if not better than our Canadian Men’s Team and that we are simply expecting too much?  When you are put on a pedestal with such high expectations, there is only one way to go…that’s down.

Our men may be taking the long way, but I’m sure they’ll get there.  I say GO CANADA GO!!!
