It’s going to be a huge challenge finding a replacement for Christopher Williamson at Bayview Glen – a private or independent school in Toronto. Not only is he an exceptional student, jock and active in almost everything at Bayview Glen, but he graduates having become the first student at the school to qualify for the provincial playoffs in three sports in one year.
For starters, his grades were around the 94 per cent mark.
He was chosen Valedictorian, also on the school Student Council, participated in the Debating Society and found time in a busy year to finalize plans to study English Literature in the fall at the University of Western Ontario in London.
Now, to the sports.
There’s distance running, track and field and swimming – where he advanced to the provincial playoff round. Also, some downhill skiing. In the pool, he competes at the National level.
Chosen a two-time sports MVP, having set a record on the track, he capped an incredible high school career when school officials chose him senior athlete of the year. Doesn’t sound like they had a choice?
At the private school playoffs, he was fourth in cross country, but helped his team finish in third place. He placed in the top four in swimming in three individual races. And, in the 1,500 and 3,000 metres, won both in the school league final. In the 3,000 metres, he cut 20 seconds off his personal best time.
Williamson was one of 416 students on the list that follows this story – athletes of the year from their respective schools in the Greater Toronto Area. Names submitted by their schools.
Sadly, some schools weren’t interested in highlighting their names with us. At the Durham Board, despite appeals to the Director and through Trustees, they were shy when it came to recognizing athletes in a public way.
The newest additions of high school athletes of the year are in bold. The names of boys are listed first followed by the girls. Some schools also chose more than one winner.
Information appearing on our website and in interviews on the show Sunday Morning heard from 8:00am to 10:00am comes from high schools throughout leagues in the Greater Toronto Area, who were invited to help us salute their athletes.
