Basketball.

That was the big word at the 63rd annual athletic awards celebration on Friday night at Ryerson University.

Both male and female athletes of the year were chosen from the Rams basketball programs. Jahmal Jones, a rookie, won Ryerson’s male athlete of the year award, while Ashley MacDonald was picked as the Rams top female athlete of the year.

Jones, from Mississauga, wasted little time this year establishing himself as a dominant player on the hardwood. A point guard, he was also picked to the CIS and OUA all-rookie teams and named a first-team East Division all-star.

Sixth in the OUA in scoring, he averaged just over 17 points a game helping the Rams finish in fourth place and their first basketball post-season victory in eight years. Jones also finished second in free-throws in the OUA and third in steals.

Meanwhile, MacDonald was an OUA East Division first team all-star. She finished second in in scoring in her conference and averaged almost 17 points a game.

From Port Colborne, MacDonald helped her team make the playoffs after a fourth place finish. A 5-foot-3 guard, she helped Ryerson to an opening round OUA playoff win beating Queen’s 62-51 but then lost to Toronto 53-41 in a semifinal.
