Basketball.
That was the big word at the 63rd annual athletic awards celebration on Friday night at Ryerson University.
Both male and female athletes of the year were chosen from the Rams basketball programs. Jahmal Jones, a rookie, won Ryerson’s male athlete of the year award, while Ashley MacDonald was picked as the Rams top female athlete of the year.
Jones, from Mississauga, wasted little time this year establishing himself as a dominant player on the hardwood. A point guard, he was also picked to the CIS and OUA all-rookie teams and named a first-team East Division all-star.
Sixth in the OUA in scoring, he averaged just over 17 points a game helping the Rams finish in fourth place and their first basketball post-season victory in eight years. Jones also finished second in free-throws in the OUA and third in steals.
Meanwhile, MacDonald was an OUA East Division first team all-star. She finished second in in scoring in her conference and averaged almost 17 points a game.
From Port Colborne, MacDonald helped her team make the playoffs after a fourth place finish. A 5-foot-3 guard, she helped Ryerson to an opening round OUA playoff win beating Queen’s 62-51 but then lost to Toronto 53-41 in a semifinal.

Ontario universities and colleges cap their sports season by choosing their top male and female athletes of the year – and Sportsnet Radio FAN 590 will share the winners and information with you. Today, we highlight the top athletes from George Brown College in Toronto.

Tough job choosing a male athlete of the year at Toronto’s George Brown College, so the school selection committee did the next best thing: co-winners.
Tim Chiu and Dayvon Reid, both badminton players, shared the male athlete of the year honours while volleyball player Sadio Matthews was the pick for the top female award.
Chiu, who won the male athlete of the year award last year, won an individual gold medal at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association East region championship and helped the team take home men`s and overall titles.
Voted player of the year by the CCAA and OCAA, he is ranked fourth in the Badminton Canada list of top athletes. Chiu, from Richmond Hill, won a bronze medal at the Canadian Colleges playoffs.
Reid enjoyed a tremendous season in both men’s singles and doubles competition and was a huge factor in George Brown winning the OCAA men’s doubles gold medal. A native of Kingston, Jamaica, he had a fourth place finish at the National Colleges playoffs.
Matthews, from Montreal, was the captain of the women’s volleyball team and played in the annual OCAA all-star game.
Not only did she have impressive grades in the classroom, Matthews was chosen to the OCAA’s all-Academic team. George Brown’s female MVP in volleyball, she placed fourth in the league in digs.
