MP Angus Pressures Minister Tony Clement

Timmins James Bay MP Charlie Angus is taking his role as the NDP ethics Critic seriously.

Angus continues to put pressure on newly appointed Minister of the Treasury Board Tony Clement, over what he calls a spending spree from last year’s G8 Summit in the Minister’s riding of Muskoka.

The Treasury Board told the Commons Committee that there was no money diverted from Border infrastructure. A statement Angus calls a contradiction, considering the press is reporting an investigation by the RCMP.

Youths Arrested

Four youths are facing charges after a crime spree early yesterday morning.

The youths first caused extensive damage to the various equipment and structures located on the roof of a local high school, then stole items from unlocked cars in the Bartleman Avenue area.

The young men face charges including breaking and entering, mischief over 5-thousand dollars and theft under 5-thousand dollars.

Shania Twain Centre To Stay Open for Now

City Council approved to upgrade to Shania Twain Centre in an attempt to bring in more money and more tourists

Manager of the centre Tracy Hautenan says, although there are no ideas on what the upgrades will be,she says there are ideas floating around.

Council says cost would affect the scale of the upgrades.

Goodbyes For Historic Schools

It’s time to say goodbye to two historic schools in Timmins.

Staff and students at Queen Elizabeth and Flora MacDonald will say their goodbyes on This week as they prepare to move into the new Centennial School opening it’s doors in September.

Both Schools will hold open houses next Wednesday and Thursday for any current or past students wishing to say goodbye.

Hershey Lake problems

Area police want to keep Hershey Lake a safe place for families.

Police have been receiving complaints about glass and garbage on the beach area as well as youths drinking alcohol in the area.

Four Liquor License Act tickets have been issued and police say they will be conducting random spot checks.

Cinema Six reopens

After being closed for renovations this week, a new and improved Cinema Six reopens tonight.

General Manager of Imagine Cinemas, Gina Facca says the improvements include new seats and a new concession area because they’re focused on improving the movie-goer’s experience and what the consumer sees when they come in the door.

She says the bathrooms and outside signs are next on the improvements list.

Seniors Health Fair

Seniors enjoyed the sunshine at the annual seniors health fair in downtown timmins.

The event coincided with the opening of the downtown urban park.

Senior councillor Mike Doody helped kick off the event by having his blood pressure taken, and says it’s important for seniors to be on top of their health to maintain an active lifestyle, and watch their diet.

Downtown Road Closures For Urban Park

Keep in mind that Spruce to Pine, and Pine to Cedar will be closed off to traffic each Thursday, Friday, and Saturday this summer.

The Downtown Urban Park kicked off Thursday, and will feature a number of attractions and events for people who work in the area, and those who want to spend some time downtown.

Pine Street will remain as a throughway for motorists for much of the summer.

Kayak Challenge is back

Expect a new and improved Great Canadian Kayak Challenge.

Timmins Tourism Manager, Guy Lamarche says they’ve added a few new features including a 3-man kayak race, cameras along the course to watch the races and twenty thousand dollars in prize money.

The Festival gets underway August 27th.

Urban Park

The Downtown Timmins BIA’s urban park is the place to be to enjoy the summer sun.

Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday Third Avenue from Cedar to Pine and Pine to Spruce will be closed to traffic but full of lots of fun things to check out.
