Their hosting a free pancake breakfast tomorrow (this morning) with plenty of activities for the kids.

Campfire safety

Only YOU can prevent forest fires.

The MNR reminds that it’s important to keep your campfire small and never leave it unattended.

If it’s not extinguished properly it could cause a forest fire, and you could be fined or held responsible for the cost of putting it out.

Free fishing week

If you want to do some fishing over the long weekend you can do so license free.

July 2nd until the 10th is Family Fishing Week in Ontario. Adults and children can fish without a license but still have to keep to the rule of two fish per person.

He adds that their new Fish ON-Line tool can help you plan your fishing trip in the province.

Bike Patrol is Back

Beat officers in Downtown Timmins, will hit the open air on their mountain bikes.

The Timmins Police Service Mountain Bike Patrol unit will also be hitting up the various trails, parks and beaches for the summer.

Officers can be identified by their bright yellow shirts.

New Chief of Police

Timmins Police has chosen it’s new Chief.

Inspector John Gauthier will take over from Richard Lapperiere on August first.

The announcement was made Tuesday by Chair of the Police Services Board Mayor Tom Laughren

Inspector Gauthier has served with Timmins Police for the past 20 years, and was promoted as the Inspector of Field Operations and Community Patrol earlier this year.

Cuts to Northern Access Roads

The Ontario Forest Industries Association is asking the Government to restore funding to the Northern Access Roads program.

Minister of Northern Development and Mines and Forestry Michael Gravelle announced cuts of 36 percent to the program, which equates to 27 million dollars.

OFIA president Jamie Lim says the loss will affect Northern road construction companies, who rely on the business, and have already purchased materials.

She is asking the government to restore the funding at a minimum of 65 million dollars, which is a 12 percent cut.

Timmins Police’s new addition

Timmins Police Constable Brad Palmer has a new 14-year-old partner.

“Special Constable Thumper”, a standard-bred mare, has received her badge and will be used for community celebrations and events starting with her first assignment: the Canada Day celebrations at the Shania Twain Center.

Degree programs offered at Nothern College

Starting this fall you can get a Bachelor of Arts or Social Work at Northern College thanks to a partnership with Algoma University.

Dawn Elmore with Algoma University says the partnership offers more options for students and will also benefit the community.

Delivery of the programs will be blended, with some courses taught by video conference and some in person at Northern.

TDH golf fundraiser

The Timmins and District Hospital Foundation wants to put the fun in fundraising with the 2nd Annual John P. Larche Charity Golf Classic.

The 2 day golf event, August 26th and 27th at Spruce Needles, will raise money to enhance breast cancer services at the TDH.

Farmers Market to Debut in Urban Park

Some fresh Flavour is coming to the downtown area.

Starting on Thursday, Local farmers will have an opportunity to sell fresh fruit and vegetables as well as meat.

BIA General Manager Noella Rinaldo says all food has been grown locally.

The farmers market will be a staple in the BIA’s Urban Park every Thursday.
