Barber Shop Poll Suggests Tories will win

He’s been doing it for a number of years, and he’s usually not too far off the mark.
The results for Roger Pickard’s barber shop poll are in, and it’s a close race.
After polling 200 of his clients, 37 percent feel Conservative Bill Greenburg will come out on top.
34 percent feel it will be NDP Incumbent Charlie Angus, and 24% think Liberal Marilyn Wood will win the May 2nd election.
In 35 elections, Pickard says he’s correctly polled the winner 33 times.

School Bus Convoy Sunday

A number of local bus drivers are fighting to keep their jobs, and they’re looking for the help of the surrounding communities.
A bus will be leaving from Timmins and will connect with a bus leaving from Hearst, stopping in Smooth Rock Falls, Kapuskasing, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Matheson, Kirkland Lake, Thornloe, and travelling in a convoy down to New Liskeard and the office of MPP David Ramsey.
The Northern Ontario Bus Coalition is looking at filling a number of busses for the convoy, and need as many people as possible.
The Bus in Timmins will leave from Schumacher Bus Lines at 9AM this Sunday.
Man Found Dead

Police are still investigating after a 67 year old male was discovered dead Wednesday evening at about 7 oclock behind the Esso on Algonquin Blvd, near Gillies Lake.
The body was discovered by someone passing by who called authorities, and upon arrival determined there were no vital signs. The area was then taped off, and an investigation insued.

Construction on St. Anthony’s cathedral is undergoing a facelift
Water damage and the copper roof is to blame for damage to a Timmins landmark.
Father Pat Lafleur says it will cost just south of 1 million dollars to completley restore the outside of the church.
Construction on the front of the church should be completed by the end of July.

Canadians will go to the polls on Monday, and there are about one hundred voting stations set up in the Timmins James Bay riding.
If you have not received your voting card, or require more information on how to vote, you can go to the elections Canada web site www.elections.ca, or call the local returning office at 1-866-281-4851.
Robotics competition

In the future we might have robots that transform into wondrous things like a Camaro or Jet fighter, and thanks to some inventive students the future is closer than ever.
The sixth Annual Robotics competition takes place tomorrow at Northern College.
Science Timmins President Lorrain Cantin says robots are becoming a big part of daily life and the competition benefits not only the students but the city as well.
Cantin says over 140 students from Northeastern Ontario will be participating.
Sportsman show

What do storm troopers, birds of prey, the Incredible Hulk and General Lee have in common?
They’ll all be at the 64th annual Sportsman Show and Northern Ontario Expo this weekend April 30th and May 1st.
Lions Club Member John McCauley says there are plenty of new and exciting attractions, like the Northern Ontario fan Expo and the return of the Birds Of Prey show.
McCauley expects to see over 10 000 people at this year’s event.
Colorectal cancer screening

Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the province but is 90 percent curable when caught early.

Oral Health month

The Porcupine Health Unit is promoting healthy smiles as part of Oral Health month.
From April 18th to 29th, the health unit will be giving away kits for children under the age of 17.
Program Coordinator Anna Gauthier says poor hygiene can really affect your body. She also says added it’s part of the Ministry of ontario’s initiative to promote oral health to help families in need.
