City of Timmins Websites go offline for maintenance
The City of Timmins Information Technology Department wishes to advise the public that City of Timmins hosted websites will be offline at 1:00 pm on March 23, 2011 for approximately 4 hours.
The affected websites include:

Safer roads in Northern Ontario

A new partnership between the Ontario Provincial Police and Ontario Northland is making Northern Ontario roads safer.

ONR Coach drivers have received special training and are now equipped with the knowledge of what information the OPP needs when dealing with a crisis, making them extra eyes and ears on the road in the effort to make our roads safer.

TDH Receives Rebate from Union Gas

Timmins and District Hospital has received a 172 thousand dollar rebate through the Union Gas Enersmart Program.

TDH began retrofitting their facility in 2009 to make it more energy efficient

Hospital president and CEO Roger Walker says the changes help reduce the environmental footprint in the community

The hospital has been able to save a half a million dollars on energy costs a year, as a result of the program.

Spring speeders

Not only are police warning you to be careful around waterways during our recent thaw, but they say the springlike temperatures are making the roads more dangerous as well.

OPP Constable Marc Depatie says the nice weather is causing people to drive faster, in some cases much faster than the posted speed-limit.

A man was recently charged with street racing for going 154 kilometers an hour in an 80 zone along highway 144 south of Timmins.

Dangerous waterways

The recent springlike temperatures are making waterways touch-and-go.

OPP Constable Marc Depatie says children should be under adult supervision around areas like the Mattagami River and Gillies Lake.

He also advises snowmobilers and ice fishers to make a plan and let someone staying behind know of it before heading out, so that police can be called if something goes wrong.

Timmins man charged in Mississauga carjacking

A Timmins man is facing charges following a carjacking in Mississauga early yesterday morning.

Marc Marenger is charged with robbery, assault and other criminal driving offences after allegedly assaulting two occupants of a vehicle, stealing it and ultimately crashing it into a home, and causing nearly 200-thousand dollars damage.

Fatality at the Hoyle Pond Mine

The name of the man who was fatally injured at the Porcupine Gold Mine Hoyle Pond Site has been released.

Mr. David Yuskow Senior died yesterday in an accident when he was struck by underground mobile equipment.

He was a certified electrician for the past 11 years at Porcupine and is survived by his wife Maggie and their son David Yuskow Junior.

OPFA Conference Coming to Timmins

The Ontario Professional Foresters Association will hold it’s 54th annual conference and AGM in Timmins from April 13th-15th.

This year’s theme is Who Minding the forest? The changing face of forest management.

Former Timmins Mayor, and current president of the Ontario Forest Industry Association is slated to speak at the thee day conference, which will cover topics from parks, caribou, enhanced sustainable forest licences and private land.

Report of Mine Fatality

There have been reports of a fatality at the Hoyle Pond Mine in Porcupine this morning.

Paramedics responded to a 911 call just after 11 oclock this morning

Timmins Police are investigating, but not commenting on the incident, as it’s in the hands of the coroners office.

Reports indicate that the incident involved operation of a scoop tram.

What to do With Old Transit Station?

The new transit station is now operational, but the question remains on what to do with the old location.

City council is now forced with the issue of what to do with the property Mayor Tom Laughren says they can either sell it to the highest bidder, or create monthly parking pass opportunities .

A recommendation for a tender has to come back to council at next monday’s regularly scheduled meeting.
