DARE Dream Draw Winners

The Winners have been announced for the DARE Hockey Dream Draw.

First place winner was sold by Bradley Laneville of the Timmins Minor Hockey Association and is Marc Laneville of Timmins.

Second Place Winner is Tracey Potvin of Timmins, and was sold by Ketlon St. Aubin also of TMHA.

The draw sold over 33 thousand tickets, generating a revenue of over 168 thousand dollars.

Eskis Finish With a Split

The Abitibi Eskimos split their weekend.

beating North Bay 6-3 Saturday at the Igloo,

but falling 6-5 to Temiskaming on the road last night.

Two players were handed NOJHL Awards.

Captain Josh Clancy named the leagues most gentlemanly player.

And leading scorer Erik Robichaud was named rookie of the year.

The Eskis open up their first round playoff series with the North Bay Trappers next Sunday March 6th 7:00PM at the Jus Jordan Arena.

Riders Charged for Inproper Documentation

The South Porcupine OPP Detachment’s Snomobile Patrol team was busy this past weekend….stopping a total of 127 people on sleds, and handing out a number of equipment, and administrative violations.

A 38 year old man was charged with not having a currently validated permit, while a 30 year old man was charged for not having a permit at all.

The OPP remind riders they are to have proper documentation with them at all times while riding.

Power of Learning

The Academic Upgrading program at Northern College has a new initiative called The power of learning.

Coordinator Tuula Bernard says the idea is to send a consistent message across the north especially with a potential work shortage looming.

The Academic upgrading program can also be used for students who are looking to acquire individual courses such as math or science programs.

Legendary Jersey Coming To Town

Timmins is one of 62 stops on the Henderson Jersey Homecoming Tour.

The tour, which includes the jersey Paul Henderson wore when he scored the Goal of the Century as well as many other pieces of memorabilia from the 1972 Summit Series, will stop at the McIntyre Arena March 8th.

Bisson Questions Use of Agent Orange

During the latest question period at Queens Park, Timmins James Bay MPP Gilles Bisson questioned the government on the way it has handled the issue of Agent Orange and it’s use in northern Ontario.

He says new evidence has emerged that the same chemicals which were used in Agent Orange, were used by the Ministry of Transportation.

Bisson feels it has become clear that knowledge of the use of Agent Orange within government agencies was more widespread than initially suspected

NOVA Nominations Being Accepted

This year’s theme is Northern Lights.

Timmins Chamber of Commerce President Gary Marriot says it’s become a tradition filled with excitement in the business community.

The deadline for Nominations is March the 11th. Nominations packages are available for download on the Timmins Chamber of Commerce web site .

Child and Family Services Amalgamation

Timmins and Disitrict Child and Family Services will now all be joining forces with CFS partners in Timiskaming and Hearst to form one group.

Executive Director for Child and Family Services of Timmins and distirct , and the project lead for the amalgamation Richard Lambert Belanger says it’s a positive step for all of the organizations.

A steering board has been formed to oversee and develop a plan for the merger. They are hoping to become fully operational by the spring of 2012.

Scam Hits Timmins

The Criminal Investigation Division of the Timmins Police is investigating a reported scam where the victim was selling property online.

The person posted property for sale on a website and found a potential buyer, who sent a certified cheque worth more than had been agreed upon. The seller then received an email asking them to send the extra money to an address in France.

The bank told the victim that the cheque was fraudulent
