De Beets Victor Mine 2010 Wrap Up

Big things are on the horizon for De Beers Victor Mine.

Director of External and Corporate Affairs Tom Ormsby says the Victor mine exceeded production targets set for 2010, and they plan to expose the Victor South West Pit to mine the two pits simultaneously in 2011.

Timmins Transit Moving Dec 8th

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Timmins Transit will begin operating from their new location December 8th.

As of next Wednesday you can catch Transit AND Ontario Northland buses at the “Ontario Northland” building on Spruce Street South.

St Andrew Goldfields Ltd Holt Mine Incident

An incident Friday afternoon has forced work to stop at the Holt mine.

No employees were injured when a truck was being lowered underground and caused damage to the structure of the shaft.

Repairs could take up to 20 days.

Mining seminar

The Timmins Economic Development Corporation is hosting a seminar for mining supply and services companies who are interested in exporting their products. The seminar is being held Tuesday November 30th. The Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry will be introducing an export assistance funding program. Contact the TEDC to register.

Xstrata survey

Community perception surveys are in the process of being completed regarding Xstrata Copper. Pierre Noel with Xstrata says information is being gathered, including the companies activities and impact on the region. Residents can give their feedback until December 10th by calling 705-267-8911.

YMCA Peace Award

It’s Peace Week, and the YMCA is honouring four Timmins residents for their involvement in the community. Fern Tremblay, Cathy Davis, Rick Young and Ed Ligoki are the recipients of this years YMCA Peace Medallion.

Science Olympics

Northern Ontario’s best and brightest science students will be at Timmins High and Vocational School Friday for the 16th Regional Science Olympics. Spectators are welcome to watch the students compete in different activities that promote both creativity and teamwork.

ONR/Porquis Junction

Ontario Northland will be offering train service to those in Porquis Junction starting December 15th. A new stop will be located at the former site of the Porquis Junction train station. The change will eliminate the need for passengers to travel to Matheson to catch the train.

Festive RIDE

The Timmins Police and South Porcupine OPP will be spending the holidays together to help rid area highways of impaired driving. OPP Constable Marc Depatie says drivers should expect to encounter RIDE spot checks during the holiday season, and reminds you to use common sense, have a designated driver arranged or call a cab if you plan to drink.

New library display

The Timmins Library is now home to a new display featuring First Nation’s history. The library, along with the Ojibway and Cree Cultural Centre applied for funding to purchase the collection, which features books, film, music and art work.
