Police arrest 5, still searching for 1

Timmins Police are searching for a local man in connection to recent break and enters. Five people have already been arrested, including Alexandra Swanson, Michael Jobin, Marlo Trudel, Katherine Edwards and Garfield Butt. Police are still looking for Peter Albert. He is 25 years old, approximately 6 feet tall and 150 pounds with a very thin build. Anyone with information is asked to call the Timmins Police at 264-1201 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

NL murder update

A New Liskeard Man has been charged with first degree murder. Kenneth Resse,47, is accused of killing 53 year old David Pannell. Pannell’s body was found in a New Liskeard residence earlier this month.

Changes to waste management

Changes are coming as to how your garbage and recycling is collected. Early next year, the city will hand out new bins and do weekly pickup. Phase one of the $2.8 million dollar waste and recycling project is almost complete at the Deloro landfill and will allow more items to be recycled and cut down on waste.

Dining for a cause

Purchasing your meal on October 14th helped raise over $13,000 for the Timmins and District Hospital. The money raised during this year’s Dining for a Cause event will be used to purchase a new infant warmer for the hospital.

Youth development

The Ontario Government is creating a Youth Development Committee to get people’s opinions and create support services for teenagers and young adults. NDP/HST

The NDP are working to remove the HST from more and more items. Legions will no longer be charged the tax when purchasing poppies after an uproar earlier this week by the NDP and the Royal Canadian Legion. MP Charlie Angus says he’s now asking the Harper government remove the HST from home heating fuel.

Bisson/ONR update

Earlier this week we told you about ONR rail tickets. Customers travelling on the Polar Bear express had to use the tickets for a certain date, while other passengers had the option of using the ticket within a year of purchase. The policy is changing next month, and all tickets for any train line will be able to be used on any date within a year of purchasing. The change came after MPP Gilles Bisson questioned the Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry about the policy earlier this week.

Funding for recreation in the Far North

Canadian Tire and the Ontario Government are teaming up to bring the Jumpstart program to Northern First Nations communities. The Jumpstart program helps youth get involved in recreational activities by providing money for registration, equipment, and transportation. Canadian Tire is donating seven Jumpstart kits to Northern First Nation communities, which will help 1500 kids get involved in sports.

Halloween safety

Ghosts and goblins will be wandering about the streets on Halloween night and the Timmins Police want to remind drivers to keep their eyes open. Constable Rick Lemieux says on Halloween kids are excited and might not be following the rules, so drivers have to follow them extra carefully, take their time and especially watch for kids coming out from between parked cars.

Angus/CRTC hearings

MP Charlie Angus is calling on the CRTC to set firm targets regarding high speed internet access in the north. Angus says economic development will be directly tied the technology access. CRTC hearings are being held in Timmins at the Days Inn until Thursday and they are open to the public.
