Ring of Fire

Noront, a major company involved in the Ring of Fire development is continuing to move the project forward. Chief Operating Officer of Noront Paul Semple says northern Ontario as a whole will benefit from the project, including Timmins. Semple says exploration is on-going, and feasibility studies are being worked on.

Lab closure?

A review is underway to determine which Ministry of Health labs will be shut down, and the one in Timmins may be on the chopping block. MPP Gilles Bisson says the lab in Timmins has been in operation for 50 years. Minister of Health Deb Matthews says no final decision has been made.

Mammograms

Mammograms save lives but not every woman at risk of developing breast cancer is getting one every two years. Once a woman turns 50 she is automatically at risk, yet only 68% of women in Ontario NorthEast between 50 and 69 are getting a mammogram every two years. Roberta Major with the Canadian Cancer Society says early detection saves lives and every woman at risk should talk to a healthcare professional about getting screened.

Indecent act

The Timmins Police are looking for a man after an indecent act occurred Sunday evening. A man exposed himself to a woman in the Birch Street South area. The victim is described as being a white male approximately 25 years of age, approximately 5’6″ to 5’8″ tall, thin build, light brown to blond goatee with no moustache, and possibly had a gold loop earring in left ear. He was last seen wearing an older black and yellow jacket in the body area with black arms, black shoes, dark beige cargo pants and a black and green striped toque. Last month, a similar situation happened and Police think the cases may be related. Police ask anyone with information to contact them or CrimeStoppers.

NDP look to help seniors

The New Democrats are looking for increased support for seniors. MP Charlie Angus says his party is putting forth a bill that would ensure seniors’ support programs be indexed to the cost of living.

OPP reminder: election signs

The OPP want to remind you that vandalizing election signs is a criminal offence. Often signs are on private property, so you could be charged with trespassing in addition to causing mischief under $5000. If you have information about signs being vandalized you are asked to contact CrimeStoppers.

Purple ribbon month

October is Purple Ribbon Month and Child and Family Services of Timmins and District is teaming up with VCARS, The Canadian Mental Health Association , Centre Passerelle pour Femmes, and the Timmins Native Friendship Center to stop violence against women and children. On Saturday, keep an eye out for volunteers handing out purple ribbons around town.

NDP look to cut HST on hydro bills

The Ontario New Democrats want the Liberals to remove the provincial portion of the HST off hydro bills. MPP Gilles Bisson says lower hydro bills are needed. He adds he’s heard from many constituents who can’t afford to heat their homes.

Construction at city dump

The Deloro landfill is under construction. A new transfer facility is being built to manage collected recycling products within the city. The construction is in preparation for waste collection changes. Starting next spring, the city will offer weekly garbage and recycling pick-up.

Hunting safety

If you’re hunting waskly wabbits or other game this hunting season, the South Porcupine OPP want you to do so safely. They remind to plan your route and leave the details with someone, and to always carry a cell phone, AM/FM radio, first aid kit, extra food, water and fuel.
