Local Officers Help at Summits

When things got crazy at down south, police from the north were there to help. Officers from the Temiskaming Shores and South Porcupine detachments were on hand for the G-8 in Huntsville and were also called in to assist when protests got out of hand at the G-20 summits.

Reform Party of Ontario

The Reform Party of Ontario is touring the north this week. Leader Brad Harness says the party has a very different view of Northern Ontario, and has plans to stimulate the economy. Harness adds the main priorities are developing the economy of Northern Ontario through trading and natural resources, and cutting down the provincial deficit.

World leaders are gathering in Huntsville for the G-8 summit and a few local OPP officers are helping with security. Constable Marc Depatie says all the OPP officers in Huntsville are committed to protecting the international guests.

Xstrata Closure Update

Workers affected by the recent Xstrata Met Site closure are moving on. Some have found new jobs, some have retired, while others are re-training. Ben Lefebvre with CAW 599 says the fight will continue to keep our resources here.

With fewer and fewer places to live in Timmins and the wait lists and cost of rent skyrocketing, local Federal Liberal candidate Marilyn Wood has called on the federal government to do something about it. She and Federal Liberal Housing Critic Gerard Kennedy want the government to increase funding for Northern housing programs.

High Speed Internet

The Timiskaming and Gogama-Foleyet Area Broadband Project is up and running, providing high speed internet access to 18 rural communities. Alexandra Spence with NeoNet says these communities now have the same access to education, business, and social opportunities as their urban counterparts.

Check your bank statements and contact your bank if you see any suspicious activity. A card reading device was found at an ATM machine in Timmins. The Timmins Police are not releasing the name of the bank in which the device was found.

Distracted Driving Charges

It seems some drivers aren’t getting the hint about using their cell phones behind the wheel. The Timmins Police handed out 20 tickets in just 6 hours in a recent blitz targeting drivers on their cell phones. The fine for talking on your phone behind the wheel is $155.

Forest Fire Update

Ontario Fire crews and water bombers have been sent to Quebec and Manitoba to help ease the forest fire situations there. Lindsay Munroe with the MNR says that the rain has calmed the forest fires in our region, and 35 crews have been sent to Quebec, and 10 to Manitoba.
