The Sudbury Regional Hospital is moving closer and closer to its long-term vision of being an Academic Health Science Centre with the announcement of a new major capitol project.

Today the hospital announced plans to build a 20-thousand-square-foot Learner’s Space for aspiring doctors and nurses and for those who are already medical professionals.

Chief of Staff, Dr Chris Bourdon, calls this the single greatest advancement in teaching techniques and patient safety.

He explains how they can recreate a patient’s pathology in a simulation on a computer-generated image and have the surgeon practice the surgery before he has to perform it on a ‘real’ patient.

Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci says the provincial government is committed to paying 90-percent of the cost.

An amount was not disclosed since it could influence tender bids for the construction work.

The hospital will undertake a capitol campaign to raise its 10-percent of the funding.

Completion is slated for late 2014.
