H1N1 Related Death

There has been a third H1N1 related death at the Sudbury Regional Hospital.
Not much information has been released except that the patient was identified as having conditions that increase the risk of complications .
The death as reported to the Sudbury and District Health Unit.
Update On New Sudbury Murder

Police have released the name of the man who was stabbed to death in New Sudbury on the weekend.
32-year old Corey Lalonde died as a result of multiple stab wounds.
The incident took place in the early morning hours of Sunday at 1950 Lasalle Blvd.
18-year old Joseph Mills and a 16 year old have both been charged with first degree murder and attempted murder.
A third suspect is facing assault charges.
Weekend RIDE Report

Two Police RIDE initiatives by Greater Sudbury Police to mark the 25th anniversary of Action Sudbury and the Red Ribbon Campaign….
The first was Friday night when 235 drivers were stopped, one charged with impairment and another given a three day suspension.
Then 725 vehicles were checked on Sunday with one three day suspension.
Meantime…just over 26 hundred vehicles were stopped by OPP in Sudbury and Espanola on the weekend with no impaired charges laid.
The RIDE program will continue throughout the holiday season.
Urgent Plea From United Way

The local United Way is sending out an urgent plea to every resident in Sudbury -funding is desperately needed.
Sixty programs and 30 agencies depend on the money brought in during the annual campaign, which is at risk of running short this year.
Campaign Chair Lise-Anne Papineau explains that the United Way needs hundreds of thousands of dollars just to maintain current levels.
She calls upon the community to give and says after looking at the numbers there are plenty of people who are not in a crisis who can still provide donations.
First Big Snowfall Causes Headaches On Roads

With the first big snowfall of the winter season police are sending out a timely reminder for motorists to give themselves extra time.
Make sure vehicle windows are cleared of ice and snow and leave plenty of space for braking.
Sudbury Police were called out to a total of 18 collisions Sunday afternoon due to icy road conditions.
Environment Canada says Sudbury got roughly 6 centimetres of snow, but rain in Wednesday’s forecast is likely to melt it away.
Penalty-Filled Loss For Wolves

Penalty problems cost the Sudbury Wolves again in last night’s 3-1 loss in Kitchener.
Sudbury gave the Rangers 11 power play opportunities and they scored all of their goals with a man advantage.
The loss leaves the local juniors tied with Niagara and Oshawa for dead last in the East.
They visit Peterborough Thursday.
Early Morning Homicide

Investigators at this hour are on scene, trying to piece together the scene of an early morning homicide in New Sudbury this morning.
It happened around 1 o’clock at 1950 Lasalle.
Police say a thirty two year old man has died as a result of multiple stab wounds while two others were treated for knife wounds and released from hospital.
Three men, (two adults and a young offender) are currently in police custody.
The young offender and one of the adults are both facing first degree murder and attempted murder charges, while the third suspect is looking at assault charges from the incident.
The name of the victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Police say they hope to release further details as the investigation continues.
New Guidelines On Picketline Protocol

From now on cars entering Vale Inco will only be delayed for 15 minutes from the time they get in line, not when they reach the picket.
EZ Rock has learned Superior Court Justice Robbie Gordon handed down his interpretation of the original injunction on picket line protocol in a ruling Saturday.
However he said Vale should be doing more to reducing the amount of cars crossing the line including instituting carpools all in the interest of good labour relations.
There’s no decision yet on the 25 Million dollar Civil suit filed against the union as both sides return to court December 9th.
Day One On McGrath Trip To South Pole

Local thrill-seeker Meagan McGrath officially takes off on her next adventure this morning provided the weather holds.
Thirty two year old McGrath is being flown to Hercules Inlet in Antarctica today to begin a 11-hundred km, 45 day solo journey to the South Pole.
Armed with supplies, a couple safety beacons and two satellite phones she will otherwise be alone and unassisted.

Sudbury Attempted Murder Suspect Arrested In Toronto

A man wanted for a stabbing in Sudbury two weeks ago has now been arrested in the Toronto area.
According to Sudbury Police, an arrest warrant was issued for 32 year old Darrel Bebonang for attempted murder following the stabbing of a man and woman on Louis Street.
Last night around 9-45 he was arrested by Toronto police.
28 year old Joanie Anwhatin has also been arrested for accessory and is believed to have helped Bebonang in his escape.
Arrangements are being made for their return to Sudbury, and both are expected to be in bail court sometime tomorrow.
