The final piece of the funding puzzle fell into place for the Algoma Manor redevelopment project and Algoma Manor Board of Management Chair Donna Latulippe says the project will be moving forward imediately. She’s hoping they will have a succesful bidder for the project named and on site within eight weeks. Algoma-Manitoulin M-P-P Mike Brown announced yesterday that the Ontario Government will be providing an additional 3-point-1 million dollars for the new facility bringing the province’s share up to 12-point-6 million for the over 15-million dollar project. Algoma municipalities and local fundraising efforts make up the balance. It’s hoped the project can be completed within 18-months. The new facility will have 10-less beds than the current 45-year old facility. Latulippe says it was a fight to get it up to the 96-bed level considering the province had recomended a 64-bed facility.

The removal of funding for a First Nations group was mentioned in the House of Commons yesterday. Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing M-P Carol Hughes is suggesting the Harper government should do more to reconcile with First Nations than deliver an apology. Hughes made the comment in the House of Commons yesterday as she tabled a petition with the signatures opposed to a government plan to remove funding for the Aboriginal Healing Foundation. The foundation was created to help in the healing process and reconciliation of those affected by physical, mental and sexual abuse caused by the residential school system — Ottawa plans to stop funding for the group after March 31st.

A labour force analysis and workforce development strategy by the Algoma Workforce Investment Committee has been going on for more than a month now. The group is working with Sault College on the study — the goal is to gather information from industry, education, training providers and other stakeholder groups to improve the employment outlook. The committee feels that immigration does not represent a significant addition to region’s population and workplace figures, adding the district is dealing with several variables from an aging workforce and youth/rural migration to a lack of opportunity for young people with post-secondary education and a lack of infrastructure that adds value to local resources. The project will assist communities in the creation of a workforce development strategy and outline recommendations to enhance the labour market outlook in Algoma District in the next three to five years. A study final report is due sometime in the fall of 2010.

City fire crews were called to a home in the 300 block of Patrick Street around 7:00 last night after a stove had been turned on - with a plastic container left unknowingly inside it - causing all kinds of thick black smoke. Crews were there for about an hour, venting the place - some restortation work will likely be necessary. There were no injuries and any damage was contained to the stove. Otherwise, with spring cleanup underway for some - so too are the number of burning complaints.

The front of the Cisler Centre is the site for the annual snowman burning this Friday at noon. The LSSU tradition began in 1971, when former public relations director Bill Rabe decided that the Eastern Upper Peninsula and Northern Ontario would welcome a ceremony that ushered out winter and welcomed spring. It was also inspired by the Rose Sunday Festival in Germany, where a straw snowman was burned at a central location — and spring would officially arrive. The Lake State event will also include poetry readings as a torch is applied to the snowman.
