Monday Police Report

Monday, October 8th, 2012

City Police are investigating an armed robbery reported just after midnight at Mac’s Mart on Gore Street. One man entered the store with a knife and took some cash. The man is described as 6 feet tall, 20 to 22 years old; wearing a black parka with the hood pulled over his face, and a ball cap with a gray brim. He was wearing baggy blue jeans, tucked into white socks inside black running shoes with white trim, and he was wearing white mitts. The knife is a black handled kitchen knife. He fled the scene on foot. Anyone seeing a person matching this description is asked to call police immediately.

A 47 year old man will appear in WASH court this morning, charged with 2 counts of assault. It is alleged he assaulted his partner by pushing her face several times. It is also alleged he grabbed the victim’s daughter by the throat when she tried to intervene.

Also–Between Friday and Sunday, an unlocked vehicle on Devon Road was entered and two paycheques were stolen.

Body recovered by OPP

The body of a missing person has been found and recovered from Lake Huron. Espanola OPP received a report on Friday of two people thrown out of a boat near the North Shore of Lake Huron near the Sagamok First Nation, because of bad weather conditions. One person was able to swim to shore. Authorities began a search for the second. After an underwater search, OPP now report the body of a man was recovered early Saturday evening. The deceased is 34-year-old Martin Nashkawa of Sagamok First Nation. The O.P.P. would like to remind the public of the need to wear life jackets if you’re out boating.

Strike Vote

Public health workers – frustrated with their inability to get a new contract with the Algoma Public Health Unit since June of last year – have given their CUPE bargaining team an 85 per cent strike madate. A strike would impact flu clinics, water safety, environmental inspections, public health inspections and other services throughout the district. No new talks are scheduled.

Presidential Debate Viewing and Discussion

The Lake Superior State University Volunteer Center and LSSU Political Science Club will host a public viewing and facilitated panel discussion of the presidential debate between President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney on Wednesday, Oct. 3, in the Walker Cisler Center.
The public is welcome to listen to a faculty discussion of the issues beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Cisler Center’s Peacock Cove and then watch the debate on television at 9 p.m. This Go Vote! event is funded in part through a grant from the Michigan Campus Compact.
As experts in their respective fields, LSSU faculty will discuss the issues to help students and the public become more informed about the issues that the candidates will be addressing. Voter information will be available at the event, as well as voter registration materials. Refreshments will be available, and the doors will open at 7 p.m.
“This event is open to the public and participants of all ages are encouraged to attend,” said Shelley Wooley, director of the LSSU Volunteer Center. “We urge you to come learn about the issues, learn how to register to vote, and view the first of the 2012 presidential debates.”

Police Beat

City Police arrested 49 year old Ronald Marini of Adelaide Street yesterday regarding a breakin to a business on Second Line back in June.
33 year old Aaron Wilson of no fixed address was was charged with two breakins to businesses on Great Northern Road in September.
A breakin was reported to a garage on Florwin Drive where a welder and red and white mountain bike were stolen.
Golf clubs were stolen from a vehicle on Alworth Place.
And a white and blue Yamaha 4 wheeler was stolen from the front of a residence in the 100 block of Grosvenor Avenue.

Greyhounds news release…

Soo Greyhounds GM Kyle Dubas announced earlier this afternoon that the club has acquired overage defenseman CHRIS BUONOMO from the Barrie Colts in exchange for a 4th Round selection in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection.
The 4th Round pick comes from a draft year which originally saw the Hounds holding 22 picks in the 15 round event. Following the trade they now hold two 2nds, one 3rd, two 4ths and two 5ths in 2014.

Buonomo, a Sault Ste. Marie, ON product, is in his 5th season with the Colts. One year ago (2011-12) Chris ended the regular season with 1 goal and 12 assists to go along with a +6 rating before appearing in 13 post-season games.

The right-shooting defenseman will be called upon to help the Hounds play in their own zone while allowing the younger players on the roster to progress at the right pace.

Buonomo and the Hounds return to OHL action this week with a trio of home games; Wednesday, October 3rd vs Saginaw, Friday, October 5th vs Kitchener and Saturday, October 6th vs Sarnia. All games are set for 7:07 p.m. at the Essar Centre.

(WAWA, ON) – On September 28, 2012 the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Wawa Detachment were advised of a theft of an outboard motor from a residence on Second Avenue in Wawa. The outboard is described as a 1999 Mercury 8hp and is valued at $1000. The theft is believed to have occurred between September 26 and the 28, 2012. MALE ARRESTED DOMESTIC ASSAULT

(WHITE RIVER, ON) – On Saturday September 29, 2012 White River officers with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to a domestic disturbance that had taken place on Winnipeg St, White River. The 43-year-old male was arrested for assault and will appear in Sault Ste Marie bail court. OPP do not release the names of accused in domestic matters to protect the identity of the victims.

Superior East OPP news release…

(CHAPLEAU, ON) – On September 2, 2012 the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Chapleau Detachment responded to a break and enter to an apartment on Lansdown Street. Several windows were broken to gain entry into the home. Items taken include 3 firearms, alcohol and jewellery. The firearms include a 410 shotgun, a 20 gauge shotgun and a 308 calibre rifle.

On September 29, 2012 OPP South Porcupine arrested 22 year old Jesse WHITE of Brunswick House First Nation. The accused was charged with the following Criminal Code offences;

1. Break and Enter
2. Mischief Under $5,000
3. Breach of Probation
4. Trafficking in Stolen Goods

The items reported stolen were recovered in this matter. The accused has been held for a bail hearing in Timmins on today’s date.

BREAK AND ENTER TO COTTAGE

(CHAPLEAU, ON) – On September 30, 2012 the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Chapleau Detachment were advised of a break and enter to a cottage on Chapleau River. The break in occurred sometime between August 20 and September 30, 2012. The locks on the doors had been smashed to gain entry into building. The items stolen are estimated to be $2500 and include a KIPOR 1000w generator, a Poulin chainsaw and a 1997 Mariner 8hp outboard motor.
