Jim Baraniuk will be assuming a new role with the newly created Algoma Anchor Agency next month. But before he moves into his new job, Baraniuk served as Executive Director of the Children’s Aid Society of Algoma for the last time at the group’s Annual General Meeting this past week. Baraniuk’s new job as the anchor agency CEO will consist of working with 13 current service providers in addictions and adult mental health and attempting those to offer those supports in a way that is more integrated in the delivery of those same services. Baraniuk starts his new job on August 7th. As for who his replacement will be at the CAS, Baraniuk responded that the board will search for a new director — with the new Executive Director being chosen sometime this fall.

Among the issues on the agenda for Monday night’s City Commission meeting, commissioners will be asked to authorize a settlement with Glawe of Alpena, Michigan. It’s mentioned in the City Manager’s Report that a settlement of 400 thousand dollars has been negotiated related to the Combined Sewer Overflow-A Project that was bid on back in 1995. Work for this project was completed in 1997, but it was never closed due to unresolved claims between Glawe and Sault, Michigan. If approved, the money would be appropriated from the project account that contains 872 thousand dollars, with any remaining proceeds from the fund are expected to be used to pay back municipal bonds for the work, helping to stabilize future water and sewer rate increases. The City Commission may also consider a request for proposal process for the collection of household garbage in the city. The issue is being considered as the current contract with Waste Management expires at the end of August. With Smith Sanitation of Rudyard declaring an interest to provide the service, an RFP process would take place with the proposals from interested parties due for the August 6th Commission meeting, pending commission approval. The alternative would be to request an extension of service by Waste Management until the end of 2012 in order to revamp the RFP to get competitive proposals during that time. A bid involving a new vehicle for the Sault, Michigan Fire Department is also on the agenda for Monday. Soo Motors’ bid of 28 thousand dollars for a four-wheel drive SUV is expected to be approved. The City is committing 24 thousand dollars, with 11 thousand provided by the USDA Rural Development in the form of grant money to go towards the vehicle and equipment including sirens, cabinetry and other modifications.

Police blotter — Saturday edition

Saturday, June 30th, 2012

City Police were busy on Friday. A 40 year old man of no fixed address was arrested for shop lifting by security at the Station Mall, where it’s alleged he stole some clothing. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 30th. Two other people are scheduled to appear in WASH Court this morning. A 23 year old man was charged at a local bar with two counts of breach of recognizance — the man had been on court ordered conditions to purchase, possess or consume alcohol. He also had a curfew to be in his residence from 11 at night until 7 in the morning. A 21 year old male was located by police near the Boardwalk. He was reportedly in an intoxicated state — a police check revealed that he was wanted for failing to appear in court on a previous charge of mischief. Sault Police also reported a theft of licence plates and ownership for a vehicle in the 200 block of Trunk Road and bear sightings in the 1500 block of Trunk Road and in the 700 block of Cooper Street.

OPP news release…

Once again, Algoma Power Inc. will partner with the Sault Ste Marie Police Service, the Ontario Provincial Police, the Anishinabek and Batchewana Police Service, Lock City Dairies, Timberland General Store, Canadian Tire and Algoma Office Equipment to encourage children to play safely.

Through this program, youth are encouraged to develop positive safety habits by wearing the proper protective equipment while enjoying outdoor activities such as riding their bicycles, roller blading, and skate boarding and general outdoor activities.

The officers are currently on the lookout for children who are playing safely and are obeying all the safety rules. Whether kids are bicycling, skateboarding, rollerblading, swimming or playing in the play ground and doing all the right things, officers patrolling their service area may stop and present a certificate, printed courtesy of Algoma Office Equipment, to reward the child for playing safely.

A coupon is presented by the officer that is redeemable at Lock City Dairies on McNabb St. or Timberland General Store for an ice cream treat and a ballot can also be entered into a draw for a chance to win one of ten bicycles donated by Algoma Power Inc. The Canadian Tire Store will donate a helmet for each bicycle won.

The winners of the bicycles are then presented with the bike in an assembly at their school.
The Play Safe program wants you to have a happy and safe summer!
